Alright.... you got an SSD, now lets see how fast it is! Benchmarks AS-SSD Crystal Disk Mark

Hi guys! Forgive me for any spelling mistakes but I have not slept for about 6 days now trying to get this to work and the men in white coats will be picking me up soon. I bought an Alienware 15 with 1GB HDD and 1GB SSD (PM951 NVMe Samsung 1024GB). For reasons that can only be attributed to criminal insanity the PC was delivered with the OS on the HDD and a blank SSD. I have now spent the last 5 days trying to install Win10 on the SSD (clean install from Win ISO file on USB). It kept failing for all sorts of reasons but I finally managed to use diskpart to set a combination of disk format and partitions that Win was happy with. The installation now goes all the way through until the restart. This is where my problems start. For reasons I cannot understand, it simply refuses to boot from the SSD. If I leave the USB stick in, the installation starts all over again, if I take it out I get "Checking media presence" and then "No bootable devices" (I have physically disconnected the HDD). The SSD is showing in the BIOS as "M.2 SSD-1 PM951 NVMe Samsung 1024GB". If I run the Win installer and then uses Shift+F10 I can also access the SSD as drive C and see that there are Win files on it. But I cannot get the BIOS to boot to the SSD. I have tried all sorts of combinations now of Legacy and UEFI with and without Secure Boot and/or Load Legacy Option Rom. I have installed everything with the SATA set to both RAID and to ACHI. I have kissed the machine, I have punished it, I have asked for forgiveness and given it flowers and chocolate. And still the bastard will not boot to SSD. I just cannot understand how it can show in BIOS and I can see the files on the drive from command line, but I cannot get it to boot. Please, please help me. I am on the brink and the only thing that has kept me alive is that I am on the ground floor and thus jumping from the balcony only looks silly, really.

Sorry if this is very noob but I'm getting conflicting answers to this: I want to upgrade my AW 14 HD and want to go with SSD as the primary boot. What's the difference if I replace my HDD with an SSD vs. adding an mSATA? Is mSATA faster booting? What I plan to do is leave the HDD as a storage only device and use either SSD or mSATA as the boot/OS. Which is better for that? And would there be any benefit to having both mSATA and SSD (other than capacity)? TIA

Hi guys I soldered m.2 slot as my y510p didn't have one. I installed ssd drive but my bios and system does not see it. Is it only bios (I have stock rev. 3.07 locked) related issue, or could it by something else I need to do to get my ssd to work?

Hi, I recently bought the new Toshiba RC100 m.2 2242 NVMe SSD for my Lenovo Y510p which has an m.2 port in it. After installation the SSD wasn't showing up in my BIOS and also not on my OS Win 10 disk management. So I did a bit of research and installed mod BIOS for my Y510p by following the steps in the link: ( https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/3546-lenovo-y410p-y510p-unlocked-bios-wlan-whitelist-mod-vbios-mod/ ) There are a lot more options in the BIOS menu now. Even after doing the mod it's not showing up. The SSD works on my friend's "new 2017 dell gaming laptop" which has m.2 ssd support in it. I don't know what exactly to configure my BIOS to make it work. I've just done some hit-and-trial configs which have eventually failed. If someone can help solve it Pleasee!! P.S. : I can share all the available options available in the BIOS if required.

hi guys, i have a z510 59398016 indian variant. I had replaced the oem 1tb sshd on sata 3 port that came in it with 250 gb ssd 1 year ago. now the optical disk drive on sata1 has gone haywire and i do not want to replace it as cd and dvd are obeolete and useless to me. can some one suggest a caddy for z510 to use my old sshd in place of optical disc drive ? would i be able to dualboot BW 2 drives if i do the above? I tried caddy from local vendor but it is not getting recognised. plz suggest some caddies compatible with z510

Good day, I am the owner of a used m18x r2 struggling to build it back up into a functional machine. The previous user had his system installed in RAID mode which won't suffice for my desired SSD boot speeds. I've ensured that both AHCI and UEFI are active in the A11 BIOS. I have also ensured to clean the main drive via diskpart CMD upon custom installing my copy of Win 7 Ultimate. Oddly enough, when the setup completes, I'll get an error message stating windows can't finish configuring and needs to restart. Heeding this message will only cause it to happen again on the next reboot, so CMD to the rescue and creating and off to making user account I go. Unfortunately, boot speeds are as slow as ever and I've verified that no RAID controllers have been left installed in the device manager. So far, my only potential lead is that I've noticed during each boot, Windows mentions that "Setup Is Updating Registry Settings" after about of minute of Starting Windows. I've been researching this exact string but I can't say I've found a concrete solution to attempt just yet. So here I am, requesting for advice as to what I should check next. Thanks in advance! EDIT: I've tried out a new install accessing the CD through legacy but still keeping the SDD Boot drive on UEFI mode. So far haven't had to mess with CMD anymore to proceed nor has the Setup needed to Update Registry Settings. I also remembered to install the intel rapid storage driver. Alas, I'm still left with 2 minute boot times(particularly on the Starting Windows screen), so the problem still remains. EDIT2: Diagnosing with a Boot Manager, I discovered it takes about a minute before svchost even starts running. So with that, I ruled out it wasn't a software problem. I then decided on the possibility that maybe the other drives could be interfering with booting. Pulling out the other HDDs had no effect, but the actual culprit was the mSATA SSD that was left in from the last user. Now I can enter windows in 3 seconds! Even fishier, this mSATA drive says its 32 GB but Speccy says its a 1GB drive. But that's a problem for another time, at last my 850 EVO is showing off its expecting speeds.

Hi guys. I have had my egpu setup and running fine for the past year or so on my mbp (mid 2012) which has a hdd drive. I now want to improve the gaming performance, so I've bought an ssd. I manage to get through all the steps in eGPU Setup 1.2 but when i go through the bootloader, it says at the very end "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". I'm guessing it is to do with my ssd being in the optical drive bay location (i assume this is hd1) and the original hdd (hd0) being disconnected, so windows can't see it when in bootloader. I think I need to edit the config file for the chainloader, so the bootloader reads the ssd but what exactly do i need to change? I tried changing the map section (line 55): map --harddrives=1 if "%DRV%"=="C" map (%FIRSTHDD%) (hd0) Changing the (hd0) to (hd1) put the bootloader in a loop!? So I am not sure what to try next... Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks

Hi! I have recently a power shortage problem - the battery in my laptop ran out of juice and it suddenly shut down. This resulted in a broken SSD drive, which actually died a week later (not detected by any system or adapter). The laptop also had another SSD msata drive installed which was ok and I could see the data on it when booting into linux from pendrive. I then got a new drive and went for a completely new system in RAID 1 config for backup - changed legacy to UEFI mode in BIOS, removed the mSATA before in case I got something wrong and the data was erased. After installing Windows to the RAID volume I plugged the mSATA SSD into the mobo again and it is no longer visible for both BIOS and Windows. What could have gone wrong? I assume these possibilities: the motherboard went wrong or the drive got broken - question is "HOW"? I resorted to google straightaway and I've found several tips: - update the BIOS (did that, and nothing changed) - change RAID/AHCI/ATA modes (still nothing) - reset the RAID, install new OS and drivers (still not showing the drive) - complete a "power cycle" for SSDs, found on Crucial's forums (is that even a thing?) I need to recover the data from this mSATA drive - how do I do that? The system I'm using: Dell M6700 with i7 3940XM 16GBs of RAM 2x ADATA SSD in a RAID array 1x Samsung PM851a mSATA - the one I am trying to revive

Hi! I've recently got myself a used Dell M6700 and since I have some parts laying around I thought it was a good idea to play with it a little. All mods have gone good so far and I am down to the configuration for best performance and data safety. This thread is about configuring hard drives so that they give me reliability in case of emergency. My configuration is: M6700, i7 3940XM, GTX880m, 16GB RAM, Windows 10 x64 Anniversary Edition 1x ADATA DP910 SSD 1TB (main storage) 1x Samsung PM 851a SSD mSATA 1TB (secondary storage) 1x Seagate ST1000LM024 1TB (backup drive) How do I use the PC? I use the main storage for OS (partition 1 with ~300 GB space) and programs (partition 2, remaining space), which are mostly music production tools, video and graphic design tools and some games from time to time. The secondary storage is currently used as a place for downloads and data that I don't use super-frequently, such as old photos, old music projects, etc. The HDD drive is in a separate bay and I can plug it in/out anytime. Currently empty and waiting for further actions. What do I need? I have experienced different drive failures in the past and am aware that nothing lasts forever. I am super nervous about the data I store on my main drive as sometimes I need to carry the laptop with me to play a gig or work somewhere away from home. In these situations I need to be sure nothing happens to the PC or that I have an easy backup. What I want to achieve is a setup that works like this: main drive working most of the time, secondary storage for less important data and a backup drive that'd essentially be a clone of the main drive - if the ADATA fails I wish I could switch the boot sequence in BIOS options to the backup drive and make the PC work again with the same OS, same settings and most importantly, very quickly after the failure. Now, I know that my M6700 comes with RAID configuration, but for now I am using AHCI setup for the three drives. First question is: is the RAID controller of my laptop a hardware one or is it a software option? I don't want to use anything that would slow down the CPU. As far as I know - RAID 1 (never used it before) is something similar to what I want - I believe it clones the drive (does it also clone MBR?) sector by sector. Would it work as I described above? If yes then do I need to reinstall Windows again to change from AHCI to RAID? Or maybe after the change a FIXMBR method would be enough to get it going again? Windows 10 comes with several backup options: File History, System Image Backup and the regular Backup. To my knowledge, none of these options are what I need - a quick way to repair my laptop if the main drive stops working. Yes, I could probably restore my data from these backups, but no, I won't be able to boot the PC in 5 minutes after the failure, am I right? Would it be better to just purchase some backup software and set it to automatically clone my drive from time to time? Let me know what you think and if you have any suggestions, feel free to leave a comment

Well I have now banged my head against this wall for a week. Here is the basics of my system, all other parts are standard: Alienware M17xR4 (delivery date May 2012) Intel 3720QM processor w/Intel HD 4000 iGPU AMD 7970m 015.017.000.000.042717 (if I read the right sticker) Samsung 850 Evo SSD msata 1TB (removed other 2 Mechanical HDD's to simplify troubleshooting 8 GB Ram Windows 7 64bit service pack 1 - installed fresh not a factory install, manually installed drivers myself (Winupdate last run in Feb 2016, then ran it on May 17, 2016 with a restore point being created before the windows update started, windows failure May 19, 2016 approx 10pm local time for me) System Bios: A12 Overclocking Notes: No overclocking attempted, ever. All parts are running at system spec settings Driver notes: AMD are Leshcat drivers 15.7 WHQL Unifl. IntelRST 11.x - version required with Dell drivers for Alienware OSD, Respawn, and other related software, all drivers where possible were most current on site or by maker of product, i.e. Intel Management Interface) Trouble started: While I was playing a game a week ago, the computer froze, no mouse movements, alt-f4 would not close the program, no keyboard response. It was typical as this game has issues with the switchable graphics and only sees the Intel HD4000, even though in the AMD CCC I set it Max Perform (main reason for running Leshcast drivers since Dell and AMD had old versions and/or drivers that were having issues or had the CCC lock some programs into one performance category or another and user couldn't change). Inital Action Taken: So when I rebooted nothing showed up. So I did my normal routine, windows recovery environment off Windows 7 Sp1 64bit retail disc. Nothing happened. sfc /scannow wouldn't run, chkdsk with the various / settings found nothing. I thought this was strange never had this issue before. So I figure well lets go into safe mode and find out what is going on. It just went to a blank screen with a mouse cursor I could move but no shortcut keys brought anything but sticky keys up. After spending hours trying different things, I started to get the 0x07b error. So I did something I don't like, system restore. The only restore point I had was just before a Windows Update was done. Now everything started to go wrong. I would find one solution, but it would not work. Possible Mistakes: I deleted the prefetch directory and removed the Panther directory, in hopes of resetting the prefetch setup. Trying to learn how to put back together the Windows Boot Manager/BCD. I can't confirm if the BCD has been configured in the registry or not since I am only able to load the 5 hive keys in the c:\windows\system32\config and the date on the registry backups were almost 2 hours after the problems started, so they have been of little use. No additional restore points, just the one that I already tried and of course that leaves me with nothing. Reading to many forums Some of the Solutions attempted: rename amd drivers and oem file safe mode safe mode w/networking windows system repair x3 sfc /scannow - won't allow rebuilt the bcd, uefi partition correctly labeled adjust entries in reg to remove amd/ati (but made backups before deletion of the keys) removed all drives but the SSD and no usb devices ran Norton Tool (ISO) for scanning for viruses/malware - results clean as a whistle (and that was with SSD + 2 HDD). Other Notes: I have seen about 5 different errors show up in the Windows RE, but they change frequently, I get the Boot Status Indicates that the OS booted Successfully. I even put in an older clone of this computer, it was from around August 2015. It got into Windows normal mode. I looked around in the SSD for some sort of errors, bad files, etc. Then I made the mistake of seeing if I could boot again into Normal mode on this clone. Opps! Now it won't boot. I can off and on get into safe mode on the clone (not the ssd). Finally it went to the black screen with mouse cursor. I gave up and removed it as it obviously wasn't of much use now. The Alienware model physical installation location of the Msata part is not at all easy to get too, as it all but requires a system tear down almost down to just the frame holding the motherboard. When I had access to safe mode/normal (fyi, I do not have either ways to access Windows) I had Samsung Magician 4.7 software check the status of the SSD and no issues. A new issues that started to appear was in the bios of the laptop. It no longer called the discrete graphics AMD 7970m and Intel HD 4000, now calls them ATI gfx and Ivy Bridge, respectively. I eventually got Windows RE command Bootrec /scanos to say there was a windows install. Now it says there isn't, so it sounds like the BCD/UEFI Boot manager/etc is again wrong. Where am I now on this problem: I just don't know what else to do. I want to try and avoid a reinstall as it can take a long time with all the software and *cough* games I install. Didn't bother contacting alienware as it is really Dell support and someone reading a script that tells them to have me reinstall immediately, so pointless. I can use the help at this point. I have way too many websites/forums, etc. bookmarked it could take years to clear all of them. So I feel I have reached that point that this problem is beyond my knowledge or expertise or lack their of. UPDATE: MAY 28, 2016, Sat, 10pm, as noted below I removed the GPU to verify it wasn't the 7970m, while out I think I came across the sticker that shows the bios version of the video card, it was the only sticker that had a proper looking vbios, 015.017.000.000.042717

I decided to build eGPU for my late 2013 13" MBPr 11,1 but got lost in the details for the planned configuration. I after the following: Nvidia 970 or 980 GPU external SSD drive for Windows 8.1 and the games a case that can fit both GPU and SSD The questions I'm not sure about: Is it possible to install Windows on the external SSD and daisy chain it on the same TB cable as the eGPU? Can I use the MacBook's LCD with Optimus & Win 8.1 or Win 10? Which eGPU case and GPU brand would you recommend for the easiest installation? I wouldn't custom build the external case, just buy the one that works. I hope I can get the information I need and I hope it's doable for the average human being. :-) Thank you!

First, The Results WEI score, left side is SSD :) Crystal Disk Mark ATTO Disk Benchmark Boot time (sorry forgot to screenshot the before, it was 82 seconds) : And now, i'll list the operations i've done to optimize my new SSD's performance. I won't go into the reasoning for those steps, they've been discussed time and time again, this post is just to organize the steps to execute them. So here we go: 1. Reinstall windows from scratch. 2. Installing all the drivers, chipset first and then the rest with restarts in between. 3. move c:users directory from my SSD to the data drive using symbolic link 1. Booted with windows 7 Media, chose repair windows 2. choose command prompt 3. copy users to hdd (when booting like that my C drive became E and D remained) robocopy "E:Users" "D:Users" /mir /xj /e 4. rmdir e:users /Q /S (you might want to just rename it in case there are porblems) 5. mklink /J e:users d:users (when booting like that my C drive became E and D remained) restart and you should see your users directory on the data drive Then run services.msc to disable the following services: 1. Disk Defragmenter 2. Superfetch 3. Windows Search Alternatively you can start an elevated command prompt and run the following three commands sc config defragsvc start= disabled sc config SysMain start= disabled sc config WSearch start= disabled OUTPUT FOR EACH SHOULD BE : [SC] ChangeServiceConfig SUCCESS Next, Open my computer, right click on the SSD drive choose properties and remove the checkbox from "Allow files from this drive to have contents indexed..." press Ok, and then choose the recursive option, OK and wait for it to finish. Next i enabled write caching on the SSD drive, for that, we need to go to device manager. (Right click on my computer, Manage and choose device manager). There we need to expand the "Disk Drives" section and select the Intel SSD... device, and right click properties on it, in a window that opens choose policies tab and check the second checkbox that says "Turn on windows write cache buffer..." Disable superfetch and prefetch: run regedit go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetContro lSession ManagerMemory ManagementPrefetchParameters Set 0 on EnablePrefetcher EnableSuperfetch Disable Hibernate : start an elevated command prompt (start, in the search box write cmd, right click the result and select run as administrator) C:Windowssystem32>powercfg -h offFinally disable system restore: Right click on Computer, Properties, Advanced System Settings, select system protection tab, choose the SSD drive (usually C),press Configure and select Turn Off System Protection. Thanks TheSSDReview) Since i have 8 gigs of memory i've also disabled the pagefile. This step is not usually recommended for people with 4 gigs but Les here says he runs fine - test at your own risk :) Comments welcome :) EDIT: Some more tips : LargeSystemCache HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSession ManagerMemory Management, I change LargeSystemCache from 0 to 1 Memory Usage of the NTFS file system - Looks like it's oboslete, decide yourself HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE System CurrentControlSet Control FileSystem NtfsMemoryUsage = 2 (Normal = 1, Increased = 2; Default = 1) Disable the 8.3 Name Creation on NTFS Partitions HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFileSystem NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation On the Edit menu, click DWORD. By default, the value for this entry is set to 0. Type a value of 1 in the Data field. Disable the NTFS Last Access Time Stamp HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlFileSystem NtfsDisableLastAccessUpdate = 1 (0 = disable, 1 = enable) (Thanks StamatisX)

Hey I am new here. I have had an Alienware M17x R4 for a while and I keep deciding to upgrade it instead of buying a new laptop. Mostly because it would be prohibitively expensive to buy a new one with comparable performance, expecially the more I upgrade it. I am quite inept when it comes to a lot of the tech stuff on this website, so bear that in mind if I make myself sound like an idiot. Currently running; OS: Windows 10-64bit Pro CPU: Intel Core i7-3840QM CPU @ 2.80GHz, 2801 Mhz 4 Core GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M, 8GB VRAM -353.17 Modified Driver, in PEG mode with A11 unlocked BIOS RAM: 32GB of some Samsung RAM, not sure exactly what kind Wireless Adapter: Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7620 Storage: Two 1TB HDDs in Raid0, and one 64GB SSD (that I believe is mSATA and used to be a cache) So what could I upgrade with what I currently have? The main thing I have thought is possibly replacing the 64GB SSD with a Samsung 850 EVO mSATA 1TB SSD. Transfer my OS to the new SSD and just use the 2TB Raid for mass storage. Would that work? What other upgrades could I do? Thanks.

Did a quick search and didn't notice anyone here using a solid state drive... So, I was wondering if anyone is. If so, share your experiencesǃ I'm using a Crucial M4 SSD which is 512 GB. The first thing I noticed was a great boot time. I can boot from off to my desktop in 35 seconds and all the background apps are loaded within the 40-45 second mark. Now, I'm sure there are faster...but this is the best experience I've had from anything I've ever owned personally before. I haven't tried shaking my computer to the point of disrupting the hard drive...nor do I plan to do it intentionally. However, I was running a transfer the other day and had to walk to the office with my computer running, lest I have to redo two previous hours of work and then wait again. No problems whatsoever. General speeds in running applications have been either faster compared to my last computer, although, I have no specific benchmarking comparisons there. I have a Mushkin Chronos Deluxe 240GB SSD which I've used as my boot drive for the last two years. Recently I began getting BSOD's when trying to write new data of any significant size to the drive. Note: The drive got to 75% capacity before I ever had any problems. The strange thing is that all the SMART data is green across the board, the drive passes all self-tests, and it reports 100% drive life left. There are never any errors found with chkdsk /r, even after the system crashes trying to write something. It passes BurnInTest sequential data write/read but fails with the same BSOD (0x000000F4) when testing using random write, random seek testing. I duplicated these same BurnInTest results on a desktop PC with the drive installed but not being booted. Only difference is when this machine crashes, there is no BSOD - it just freezes at some point during the randomized BurnInTest. Could the end of the drive just be bad flash memory? Could this happen without tripping any of the drive's self monitoring capabilities and not show as bad sectors in chkdsk /r? This is only the second SSD I ever purchased, and the first failure I've experienced to date. Is this as strange a behavior for SSD's as it seems?

Hi all, I'm new to upgrading PCs. Moved from console to PC gaming a year ago, so now need to learn more about upgrading the laptop. I have the ONE version of the GT70 laptop with the RAID 0 2x mSATA 128Gb SSD and a 7200rpm second HDD. Have to upgrade to W8.1 and, considering I am getting low on space on the SSDs (from where I run OS and some games), I am wondering what is a good upgrade path. I would like more SSD storage, and have read around the net that 1 SSD gives enough I/O and that RAID 0 doesn't really give any additional real world benefit. My question is though, that because the GT70 second HDD is only SATA II, would that still be the case versus the SATA III RAID 0? And is the thing about RAID 0 giving no real world benefit versus 1 SSD really true? And just to be sure, if games are mostly GPU-throttled, is there any point to even running games on SSD vs HDD? Thanks!

Hello, I soldered a NGFF connector to my laptop's motherboard a few days ago, and I installed a 128GB MyDigitalSSD SSD and it is not being detected in the BIOS, and I can't find it in the disk management either. I called Lenovo technical support the day before soldering it and they told me that installing the connector should be enough, no additional ICs or controllers are required, and I called them again yesterday, and they told me that they don't have access to such very technical information I tried a few solutions, including : 1. Switching the boot to Legacy instead of UEFI.(Stopped working since I updated the BIOS yesterday) 2. Reinstalled the chipset driver. 3. Installed ExpressCache and it didn't work either. Note: The SSD seems like it is getting power since it is heating up while I'm using the PC. Q1: Is there a way to know whether the connector is recognized by the device? Q2: I bought a NGFF to SATA connector to check whether the SSD is defective, but its arriving in a month from now, so is there any other way to do that without using any equipment? Thanks, Hush

Just got my new lenovo y510p and i really need an ssd in it.. It has 1 regular 2.5" hd bay, one msata bay and 1 ultra bay.. I got a 120gb samsung 830 ssd (from my old laptop) and the problem is that its too small so thats why i need that + the 1tb harddisk at the same time.. My question is, will the 1tb harddisk work slower in an ultrabay/sata dock that fits in insted of the dvd drive? (in other words, should i go and buy a msata ssd and use that so the 1tb hd can stay in its normal bay) or should i save some money and move my 1tb hd to the ultra bay and install my normal 2.5" ssd inside?? What would you do??

Okay guys, I'm completely stumped. I've tried for about the past two days now to transfer all of my data from my current 250gb HDD to my new 128gb SSD in my Alienware M15x. There's only 69.7gb on the old hdd, and I've shrunken the partition down to 106gb to fit into the 128gb (119gb in actuality) SSD. The M15x only has one SATA port (correct term?) for me to fit in an HDD/SSD, so I'm forced to use a 200gb external hard drive (again, the partition shrunken down to 94.1gb to fit into the new SSD) as a "middleman" to transfer the data. I've attempted the "Create a system image" option by creating a system image in the external hard drive, taking out the HDD and replacing it with the SSD, putting in a Windows 7 64x installation disk, and selecting the "Repair my computer" option to recover the system image from the external hard drive into the new SSD. When I try to do so, however, I can an error message stating: "No disk that can be used for recovering the system disk can be found." Another note: When I attempt to create my own system repair disk and use them, I get an error message (I forgot what it said, it was just a bunch of numbers), therefore I'm forced to use a different Windows 7 64x disk I got off the internet (and that I know works). I do have the original Windows 7 64x disk that came with the Alienware M15x, however, when I attempt to use that, I never get the "Repair your computer" option, it only gives me the option to install the OS. So essentially, here is my question: Does anyone know how I can transfer my OS/data from my old HDD to my new SSD? If you new any more details, or anything else to help me resolve this problem, feel free to ask. Thank you in advance!

I have an Alienware M17X R4 with single 1TB HDD @5400 RPM drive. I need some more performance in terms of read and write and am looking to buy a SSD. I will be mainly installing the OS and applications on the SSD so as to increase the system response. When it comes to SSD, I am empty. So any suggestions, how to find a suitable one, buying tips will be appreciated within a budget of approx $260. Any suggestions related are welcome. Thank you.

Hi Guys, I am hoping someone could take a little time to help me out. I recently set up 2 x 256 SSD's in a RAID 0 configuration. I'm keen on keeping them as healthy as possible and understand trimming is the best thing for this. From what I've gathered on some of the forums, svl7's bios flash is the bomb (kudos). So the part where I need help is: I am frightened of bricking my warez and I am a hardcore flashing noob. Could anyone point me in the right direction of a kind of flashing for dumbies guide for the m18x r2 ? or perhaps detail some of the finer points in going about this so I can start seeing some trimming action without turning my beast into a oversized paperweight?
