  8. UPDATE: I placed an order for two 6970Ms to try out Crossfire. Also, I got started on #4 on my to-do list. I bought a lid and base. Apparently the base was in poor shape (which wasn't mentioned in the ebay ad). Nonetheless, I only needed the outer aluminum of the base. I used a Dremel rotary etcher to soften up the edges and dents on the aluminum piece. Afterwards, I stripped all of the plastic and mounting pieces of both parts so that it's just bare aluminum: Now, I'm getting the pieces ready to de-anodize by placing them in a bath of hot-water + Crystal Drano (30% sodium hydroxide). More to come...

  9. Thats exactly right. Although i havent got an m14x to test it on, i use this technique on my mbp 17 as well as my old i5 540m envy 15. On the mbp i tested 50, 75, 90 and 99%. I found 99 will give you your full 2.0ghz with no turbo. When i used my kilowatt meter i found 90 to be the best mix of power consumption clock speed.

  11. Some of us will be receiving the M18x today so we'll be posting up pics, videos and impressions in this thread. Stay tuned! Phew just finished the unboxing video and inspecting the system for flaws, so far I haven't found any *knock on wood*. After I edit the video I'll toss it up on youtube. Quick impressions: I've owned Alienware M15x, M17x-R2, M17x-R3 so I'm no stranger to Alienware systems. Display 7.5/10 I know I've made a big fuss over the display but I will admit this is a decent display. For those expecting a 90% gamut panel, don't count on it. It looks very similar to the M17x-R3 72% gamut panel which isn't bad, just not the best. It is not as bright as the M17x-R2 panel nor does it come close with respect to color reproduction. The contrast ratio isn't the best to be honest, it could have been better. That said, it is a pretty good panel (better than most notebooks) and very few people will have complaints. Those of you that haven't experienced an RGB LED won't be missing anything. Build 10/10 Alienware took the best of the Alienware M17x-R2 and improved upon it. It is anodized aluminum like it's predecessor but also boasts a superior palm rest (soft touch rubber which seems higher quality than the R3). I have no complaints at all, it is Alienware's best built system thus far. Weight 9/10 M17x-R2 owners will feel comfortable with the M18x, the weight is very similar. Because the M18x is wider, the weight is more spread out so it actually feels lighter than the R2 when you hold it or put it on your lap. I do not feel that build quality should be sacrificed for weight therefore I feel compelled to give Alienware high marks for building such a high quality system while maintaining a reasonable weight. Sound 7.5/10 The sound beats the M17x-R2 and M17x-R3. Once you adjust the wavemaxx settings in the IDT control panel, it is crisp and loud. The subwoofer produces decent bass although it could be a bit better. If the volume was a bit louder I'd have given it an 8/10. Keyboard 9/10 Feels solid, not much if any flex and the keys are fairly responsive. The alienware fx lighting is uniform. My only complaint is a hollow sound when you type because of the ram slots underneath. Media Panel 8/10 Very responsive, feels great and I don't miss the capactive buttons from R2 at all. I wish the they were a bit more understated so I'm docking 2 points for that. Design 9/10 Alienware took the best elements of the M17x-R1/R2/R3 and built the M18x and it shows. If they had an IPS panel and slightly better sound, the system would probably be their best system ever made. But what's up with removing the color configuration from the alien head?? 12. Ok first off I am not being lazy asking these questions and second please ignore the typos as a internet tablet isn't easy to type on. Ok going to tell you all a little bout me and then ask stuff. First I know I should get a desktop but it just wont work. I suffer from a kidney issue so a portable power house is what I am looking for. I will be doing some photoshop, bryce renders, converting dvds I get as gifts and of course gaming. I will be getting the largest HDD I can to hold my movies and tv shows for those times I spend in the hospital. My old machine was well bargin crap but I still tweaked it and got it to do most everything including playing americas army for hours at night. Now I want to get the best bang for my $$$. I can see the ram upgrade would be best done by me. So should I get the second or highest cpu? Sorry can't remember numbers Is there much diff in the wifi 1x2 and 2x2? I have build exp. So taking it apart isn't an issue so should I upgrade the thermal paste? I have read the fan is a little noisy at times, anyone thouht about replacing it with a silent mode fan? I found one that might work but costs about $45 just not sure the power connections are the same. After I get my rg I will check unless someone is willing to snap a pick for me. Any other upgrades suggestions? Money really won't be a limiting factor and I am dead set on alienware and this machine since the size is great and offers a little more then the 11 which I had been set on. I have tried to research the cpus and find reviews but like I said before this 7" tablet doesn't lend well to indepth research. Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions and I can't wait to own my first alienware (as soon as the logging company pays up for making our greyhound bus eat the back end of the logs)

  13. @Sargent - Thanks for posting man! Let me try to explain some options and hopefully add some clarity to what might work out. 1. If you are going to game, no substitute for SSD. This can be purchased on your own and replaced easily. 2. The notebook comes with one HDD and one optic drive. You can easily purchase a bay to hold an extra HDD in place of the optic drive. 3. Wifi - Well... in my opinion it doesn't make sense to buy top of the line wifi adapters if you only have mainstream to modest internet connectivity (DSL or Lower end Cable/Fiber) Really this choice should be based on what connectivity you have available to you. 4. The 2630 baseline cpu is great, but I think If I could do it over I would have grabbed the 2720. It's a good bump up in power for only 150 bones extra. My reasoning is games are really starting to push the cpu's harder... its always a balance between gpu and cpu. If your at 100 percent GPU all the extra cpu in the world doesn't matter. Im a little torn but for MOST gaming instances so far the 2630qm is plenty to keep the nvidia 555 busy. 5. Multimedia - kinda sucks that we dont have a blu-ray drive in 9mm slot drive that will fit. You can use the external ASUS drive for blu-rays and I have verified it works (since i have one) and it looks great even at 720p rez. 6. Fan noise - it's there. I would rather have noise then heat so it's my personal pref. If you can find a quieter fan then please let everyone know and I think many would probably be cheering your name! I hope this helps... Good Luck on your choice! StevenX

  14. Nice! you know what's strange though? that you have higher clocks for 3DMark11 than on Vantage, I have noticed that Mark11 pushes the system harder so I would expect your clocks to be the other way around.

  17. MW86.. man.. if you only knew how close i was to keeping the m15x and throwing in a 920xm. The 2630qm is nice but nowhere near the 920 at full potential with throttlestop. Thanks for the advice. Most of the time I focus mostly on real in game performance as that is my preference but I wanted to see what the m14x package could do. I got the m14x assuming I was going to take a hit in game performance compared to my old m15x but gain some battery life and portability. Example my max 3dmark11 score m15x = 2773 (if my memory serves correct) m14x = 1885 FPS average at native rez 900p (m15x) vs 720p (m14x) almost equal in most games (some games perform better with ATI other such as just cause 2 score better with nvidia.

  20. Hey John, does the power adapter for the M18x work with the R2? Also, it sucks to hear that it's harder to gain access to the M18x internals. I was hoping the opposite given how the M17x-R3 was designed.

  21. Come Monday I *should* be able to run a few benches and such. Huzzah. I also snapped and picked up the Intel 510 (256gb). Just couldn't go with the 320 series when I know the newer drives can take more advantage of the SATA III.

  22. Hi 5ABIVT, Nice long intro post and I agree with your assessment. The R2 is AW's best built system to date when taking the whole package into account. The M18x is nice but once you open it up, you realize it falls short of the M17x-R2. The same is glaringly true about the M17x-R3. Unfortunately, times are changing and people demand more performance and less weight thus build quality compromises have to be made. They also want lower prices so quality compromises in components chosen are made. It's a sad trend.

  23. OK, freaking finally found it on their web: "Should you encounter any problems with your Razer product or any difficulty in downloading or installing the driver, please submit an email to techsupport at razersupport.com. To allow for more efficient assistance, please be sure to note the product you are having trouble with and give us an accurate description of your problem. The support team will get back to you within two business days. If you are a US or Canadian customer, you may also contact us at (888) 697-2037. Phone support hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm PST/PDT, Monday through Friday, excluding major USA holidays. See our warranty terms and conditions for more detailed information regarding our warranty policies." -- As what the problems are I had the problem before. And it turns out my friend who also uses the Mamba mouse has the same symptoms! It seems there's a bug with mouse occasionally bugging into just going up-down (or just stays frozen into place) every once in a while if you keep disconnecting and reconnecting it. What happened with mine, is that it now happens all the time, instead of just once every few months so it's unusable. I'll try and see if I can get Epic Naga instead, since it costs the same. As for my friend, it's the guy I gave the easter razer code to last year when Michael asked me.

  24. Often in every laptop sub woofer combo I've heard they are tiny and punchy for a 1'' or less speaker. I would never complain. It takes a rather decent size speaker and power to create bass at 120Hz and below. These things sometimes reach close to that and its amazing... they will never be very strong sounding but will give a nice low tone to sound better than any set of "full range" speakers in a laptop because its not very big and therefore can't produce the average frequencies we consider to be bass but the fact that its a sub woofer enhances the other speakers. Plug in to a stereo and indulge if your home and gaming. Edit: If you have a equalizer like in the IDT control panel you can raise 60Hz 120Hz 240Hz maybe 500Hz and you'd hear what the sub woofer can do if it is going to be noticeable at all.

  28. It looks like your fix sacrifices some CPU performance which reduces power consumption and probably helps prevent the throttling that most users are seeing while trying to game on battery power. Nice work Steven. Not sure why NBR doesn't want knowledgeable people like yourself posting on their forum. After you left they decided to harass Martin, the brains behind HWiNFO. In typical communist fashion, they deleted any posts supporting Martin and his contributions to the community and then locked the thread to prevent further discussion. Great. You won't see that kind of asinine behavior over here on Tech | Inferno.
