Lenovo Y580 / Y480 'unlocked' BIOS versions

Recommended Posts

If you unlocked the bios and then got the problems, I don't think it's something at the hardware side. But you could try it of course.

Just wondering if anyone has the modified BIOS and upgraded to Windows 10. Any issues?

Should I upgrade to Windows 10 first and then upgrade the BIOS or should I upgrade the BIOS first?

Hi,
I would never thought that i could face such issue, but it happened.

When i was flashing new bios, my pc froze because of driver. Simple BSOD. Hard turn-off didn't work and i had to unplug batter and AC.
Now after i boot my computer i see only keyboard lit, fan is now spinning, screen is black.

Any advice?

Problem solved.

Looks like modern BIOSes has some kind of fail-safe mechanism. It slightly differs from pc to pc, and for Lenovo Y580 it will be like this:

The main idea of this fail-safe mechanism is to record BIOS rom file on flash drive with proper name so recovery system could read it and flash once again.

1.       Download official BIOS from Lenovo Support page

2.       Unpack it and take .ROM file (mine was QIWY3207.ROM)

3.       Download a special tool that will tell you what name should be used for this rom file (http://forums.mydigitallife.info/threads/13194-Tool-to-Insert-Replace-SLIC-in-Phoenix-Insyde-Dell-EFI-BIOSes), every laptop has its own name.

4.       Tool told me that recovery name for QIWY3207.ROM will be QIWY3.bi? but that wasn’t working, so I made several files with names: QIWY3.bi, QIWY3.bid, QIWY3.bin, QIWY3.rom don’t know which one worked.

5.       Record files on flash (I’ve used 16gb formatted in FAT32)

6.       Now detach AC cable, all USB devices, SD card and battery.

7.       Plug in flash drive

8.       Press FN + B and keep it pressed

9.       Attach AC adapter

10.   Press power button

11.   Now FN + B can be released.

12.   Laptop will spin-up cooler and start reading flash drive.

13.   For me, it started beepeing horrible, I had to wait for several minutes and then turned it off manually.

14.   After this laptop booted without problem into windows, where I re-flashed bios in usual way.

I ended up just paying for it.

I'm having the problem of not being able to downgrade the bios due to having the more updated version.

I've changed the bios version check to 0, but I think it's having issues before that.

Hey guys, I have an Alienware m14x R2, and I have been trying to get access to the BIOS so that I can change the boot options (Everything is locked, I am unsure if someone set a password of if these are locked by default).I've tried updating the BIOS, and resetting the CMOS and nothing has changed this. Would anyone know if there are other options I can explore? Thank you.

In this thread you can post your requests for Lenovo ThinkPad X250, X260.
If someone wants upgrade Wi-Fi card and remove whitelist, or unlock hidden additional menus and settings in bios setup menu, then you can post your request in this thread.
      Important!
For creating your personal bios dump and to flash your bios mod, you must use any SPI programmer  (like CH341A programmer) and a SOIC8/SOP8 test clip!

Just dump your Bios using any SPI programmer  (like CH341A programmer) and a SOIC8/SOP8 test clip, then post it in this thread or upload it to any fileserver and send me the link.

Also, you can search on YouTube a lot of guide for CH341a.

Each bios mod prepare personally and based on your personal bios dump which contain your personal data like Serial numbers, UUID, Service TAG, MAC addresses, Windows keys, NVRAM settings, etc.

      Hi all,

It has been a while since I did anything to my laptop (Clevo P670RG-G) and since I recently got a VR Headset I wish I could overclock my GPU a little. So far the NVidia software (on windows) doesn't allow me to overclock it (the linux sort of allows, which some custom Xorg options) so I decided to give a try modding the vbios.

I read all sorts of issues / guides about it, and it seens that the hardware topology (where the vbios is stored and how things are connected) changes from machine to machine.

What I know about my laptop is that it has two VBios, one for Hybrid Mode and one for Discrete Mode. I'm currently running the discrete mode.

I dumped my VBios using GPU-z and opened up in Maxwell II Bios Tweaker. Everything seens fine so far.

So I have few questions about it:

      - There is a way to just unlock the VBios to show the overclocking options in NVidia software? (That way I dont need to reflash to change clocks)
      - I can just flash this GPU-z dump to my VBios?
      - If I brick my GPU, that GPU-z dumped image is the raw SPI image, so if I managed to physically access the VBios, I can just reflash over it?
      - I saw some people saying that I might need as well to flash the main laptop bios as well, is that really needed?

      Thanks!

      Lucas
