I currently have a 24" HP and a 24" Acer external monitor hooked up to my Alienware m17x R2. HDMI is feeding the Acer (current generation LED tech), while VGA is feeding the HP (older generation LCD tech). This works pretty well, but I have some minor complaints. First, the native resolution of the two is not the same. The HP display runs a full 1920x1200 while the Acer is at 1920x1080. It seems that 1920x1200, while superior in terms of viewable area, has become obsolete - you can't really find new monitors in that format now. Since these two displays aren't identical, there are noticeable differences in color, brightness, sharpness, and responsiveness between the two. Lastly, neither of these two monitors has the mounting holes needed to attach them to an adjustable arm / stand (this is usually called "100x100 VESA Mounting" or something like that). I am thinking about replacing this with a new setup, and was hoping one of the others here might have some experiences to share. I like the idea of a single stand that both displays are mounted to, instead of each display having its own stand. Unfortunately, my desk is not conducive to "clamp-on" style mounting arms, and I am not going to drill a hole through the desk for a "grommet" or "fixed" style mounting system. So that pretty much leaves "free-standing" as the only viable type of mount I can use, which limits me quite a bit. This is the mounting system I am considering. It is not cheap, but after some research it seems to be the best bet: Amazon.com: Planar 997-5253-00 Dual Monitor Stand (Black): Electronics I am also contemplating going with a three-monitor configuration, using a USB to HDMI adaptor to drive the 3rd one. The same manufacturer offers a three-panel variation of the same hardware: Amazon.com: Planar Triple Monitor Stand: Electronics Manufacturer link with more info on both products: Planar: Accessories: Wall Mounts, Stands, and more for Planar LCD monitors - When Image Experience Matters So with those options in mind, I also need to find appropriate display panels. Ideally, these would be LED with high contrast ratio and fast response times. I realize many LED panels do not have the VESA mounting holes though (LED panels are sometimes so thin that the mounting screws are in danger of penetrating into the screen), so I might have to go with LCD. Thin bevel frames are best, so I can get them as close together as possible. Also, I prefer high-gloss displays over matte finish. And obviously if I am going to be buying three of them, price is a consideration. Any recommendations? All I know for sure is that the two monitors I have right now will not work.1 point

So, in Brian's "orochi" thread I mentioned I liked the shape and feel of the orochi but needed the 1000hz polling rate of the mamba, so I was going to combine the two. But then I found out about this little monster. It has the same polling rate as the mamba, same response time (in fact, id bet its the same wireless unit) but in an orochi form factor. I bought one, because it seems to be exactly what I want (and it was only about $40 aud!!!) and I will update this thread with a review when it arrives. -Ash1 point

I dont blame you, Yep. It seems the RGB LED is just about as common as a usefull frenchman. no offense to anyone! Thanks for your comments, you've probably helped me make my mind up, i'll just miss the anodised shell..Although i guess it would be criminal to keep a lapop of this price entirely on the basis that it looks cool. Thankyou! cant wait till i no longer have to deal with dell customer service, every second talking to their reps has been extreme agony to me.1 point

First off, Hi everyone at Tech Inferno. Second, it's disappointing to hear about the build quality issues. I'll be looking forward to read the review as well. Then again, I think you can deduce the target audience for yourself - kids who want to see the flashy alien lights and play with 3D glasses. I still can't believe they took out the RGB LED. Slightly offtopic so sorry about that but has anyone tried modding Dell Precision (the only Dell non-AW laptop that I like design-wise right now) with a gaming graphics? Some guy tried to do something like that with 5870m on Thinkpad W701 and reported on NBR/Lenovo forums that it didn't work out.1 point

I've heard some problems with quality when it comes to Compal notebooks. I hope this isn't inherited on to these new Alienwares...1 point

the full interview can be read here.1 point

Like I said in the NBR thread, I find his comment hilarious considering that one of their most senior engineers left to Apple and the others in Miami were let go. Alienware has now fully been absorbed by the borg collective Dell and is no longer a separate branch.1 point

been using the cooler master sf-19 at work. i would highly recommend this one, the fans are nice and strong. it has 4 addition usb ports, two of them are usb 3.0 which is nice. using it more as a dock then a cooler. it has some lighting effect that is real nice that goes along with alienware laptop very well. at home i just use a logitech lapdesk n500, no fans but the padding makes it very nice to use on your lap, and gaves a nice angle for typing on your desk.1 point

I think voltage should be easy to manipulate in the same way WIZ is planning on tweaking Bios OC. He will still have 5 options like 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, 5% instead he will relabel those and change the hex value or some sort of value corresponding to that. He spoke about doing it in increments of 2%. I think he would be able to use the 75mv and 150mv and just find out what code it is using for both and try to change the code for 75mv to 150mv code and use a new code for 150mv that would give you the increased voltage. Not sure if he can add more voltage options or just modify the 2 options to use a higher voltage.1 point

i'm not sure if disabling the psu warning will let you use more power, the limiting factor is still the bios. i used a 240watt psu on my M15x, it didn't really help anything other then the psu staying cooler over the stock 150watt. on both psu my maximum power draw was about the same 185watts under full load with extreme oc.1 point

Well, I'm not that lucky I did pay about $580 for it and I'm sure future retail versions will be cheaper. Also, this could be the 6990M Eurocom mentioned in an e-mail to someone, though I think a card with that name should be based of a desktop 6950 (which BTW consumes less power than a GTX 560 - what the GTX 485M is based off of). Let's call this card, the 6970M XT? EDIT: BTW Brian, what games are you going to test for your R3 review?1 point

Hi guys, I can't believe they allow speculation threads here. That's good news... Anyways, I will report my best M17X R3 OC score so far: 14,740 Uploaded with ImageShack.us1 point

I did a 1024MB run with WPrime 1.55 today and while the mult was nearly at 26x the entire time and the CPU at 2600 mhz, the time to complete it was far below an optimized 920xm that's got the use of TS. Can those of you with 2720/2820 CPU's run wprime 1.55 1024MB with 8 threads and post your results here?1 point

That means ichime card is a rare piece of hardware and can be sold on ebay for $1000 because no other 6970 will perform like that lol he is lucky1 point

Hey rev, welcome to the forum! It is extremely odd that ichime's cad has more shaders, at first I was ready to dismiss it thinking it was an R2 bios glitch but then his scores are also faster than ours clock for clock. I doubt he did anything to unlock it, more than likely he just received a sample that was already that way. It must have slipped past AMD somehow when they sent it out. AMD typically lasers out bad shaders and bins them as a lower tiered product and they likely neglected to laser the one he has. Edit: Yup I was right, take a look here, the same thing happened with desktops: http://lensfire.blogspot.com/2010/10/can-you-unlock-hd-6850-to-1120-shaders.html AMD 6950-->AMD 6970 unlocking thread: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=335318 Since those bios files are for desktops, it doesn't apply to us and since Speedy already tried to flash his card with ichime's bios (original one I'm assuming) then that means ours are already lasered and cannot be unlocked.1 point

I already try to flash ichime's bios to my card and back to Dell stock it don't change nothing maybe some way in the process ichime unlock the card but is going to be hard to figure out how can't be a different card than tirenz cards on the X7200 they are ES too and the number of stream proc's are the same 960 AMD Radeon 6970M - ETA from Resellers? - Page 31 point

Wanted to make a spot for BC2 before everyone jumps on Battlefield 3. Whats your clan? Are you recruiting? Whats are your stats? I know EA killed the sigomatic so you'll have manually tell us your stats. Any tournaments coming up?1 point

Thanks Brian, can't wait for your review of the unit. One part of the r3 that's bugging me is the whole media key assembly mine is starting to peel back and separating. I will posts pics of it tomorrow, I think that part will be a problem for many people since the media keys takes a little force to push. But other then that I love this laptop, Repasting has never been so easy Hahaha. Also something seems off with my score, just saw ichime r2 6970 score it seems much higher with only a slightly higher oc. Edit: his clevo card has more shaders.1 point

Hey inap! Welcome to the forums man! That score is awesome, it's approaching default 5870m crossfire scores and it beats 4870m Crossfire. Pretty amazing card. I got my R3 today, I haven't done anything with it yet but I plan to load up some benchmarks tonight and enable overclocking via rivatuner. After I do initial benchmarks, I'll do a tear down video + retention mod on the GPU. My initial impressions of the system are decent, it doesn't feel as cheap as I thought it would though its nowhere near as sturdy as the R2 either. Very quiet though.1 point

Awesome!! I built one of these almost 10 years ago. Ran that thing OC'd (dual AMD Athlon MP 2400+) 24/7 for years until I moved out of country. Used 2 motorcycle heater cores in series and an eheim 1250 (which pumped over 1000L/hour). I also used industry grade mineral oil (got it from work cheap) as my liquid. Kept everything housed in a custom made (at home by me) acrylic case so you could see everything. Was compact and COOL (both temperature wise and wow factor wise). Only problem with it was changing components could be messy Damn.... now I miss that thing (lol) D.1 point

There's no direct review yet but ichime posted his results on this forum in the R2 benchmarking thread with the 6970M + 11.4 Cats and his results are matching 485M. That's with an R2 no less, it should do better in an R3 + 2920xm.1 point

I try to overclock the HD6970 with Rivatuner,MSI Afterburner and AMD tool with no luck i even try to edit the rivatuner CFG file to add the device id but no luck , even flashing with ATI flash don't work it says "no adapter found" i think this time dell did something so we can't overclock i hope some body figure out how to unlock the card Here is the pics of the Dell card it doesn't have ram on the bottom so i guess at least that is a good start i can see the crossfire connector so we can expect this on dual card configurations like M18X1 point

Good news everyone, i just got a confirmation from a source directly at Dell that both the m18x and m14x are a go. He has an internal document with part numbers and descriptions for both the m14x and the m18x. (yes yes, working on getting my hands on it )-1 points
