SLI 780M or 880M gaming laptop

Question

Hey guys,

I have been reading numerous posts and doing comparisons of the Clevo/Sager NP9570, NP9380, and Alienware M18 R2 and R3. I am at a loss for which to go with. I more than likely will wait till the new (well the relabeled) 880m is released with either decision that I make, but has anyone had both clevo/sager and aw? What were your opinions of the 2?

And speaking of AW, I have read about the differences and struggles regarding the AW 18 (or street name R3) with the fan tables and throttling when overclocking. Is it worth it to go with an R2 version and then upgrade to 780m or 880m sli? Speaking of 880m...I saw that monkey was lending out some of the 880m's. Did anyone put these in a R2/R3? Any problems or struggles doing so if I pulled the trigger before their release and upgraded later (if I end up finding a good deal before hand)?

Sorry for the random questions! But thanks for all the information on the forum. Lots of good stuff here.

Hey guys I was able to get an AW 18 from the Dell Outlet and a Dell Outlet Sales rep allowed me to use a coupon intended for a different model on it. So I decided to go with that! It just shipped today!

Congrats on your purchase. Alienware is the best gaming laptop I have used to date, the 18 is a monster. Did you get SLI 880m's?

I've read that the 880m is the same chip/architecture as the 780m. If I were you I would have waited a bit longer when nVidia starts releasing 880mx chips based on the new architecture poised to make a noticeable increase from previous generation.

880 is like +10% over 780. Like the 3rd and 4th gen intel CPU's for exapmle, I dont think its all worth the hassle.

You want to share your coupon code with us? I currently own an m17x with a 780m but I can't stop looking at the 18 with dual 880m's.

I was pondering going for a 780m SLI refurbished M18x, but I was told the screen wasn't as good as the 17x screen. Mind you, if I'm using the Oculus 2 then I probably wouldn't need the screen! :D

Yeah, but if you buying a new laptop and want a fast card do you skip the current fastest card just because it's only 10% faster than the previous fastest card?

780m sli is about 35% better in fps than 880m but it has big diference in prise also ... so you choose what your wallet can afford :)

Or you could go straight for a GTX880M SLI setup :P (which is about 25% faster than a GTX780SLI setup at stock clocks and has twice the RAM)

Have to say 780M SLI, especially because you can overclock the 780M to about the same level as the 880M. Be sure the laptop has good thermals and a big enough PSU though, as an SLI setup is murder on both.

So Joseph0042, what was the configuration of the AW18 you purchased? SLI 780m, 880m or something else ?

Also do you intend to use it as an OC machine or just a gaming monster ?

Guys with 880 SLI aren't getting good results. Go with 780 if you can.

Sent with love from my Galaxy S4

im new to laptops. as far as i know GTX 780SLI itself is ranked higher than a pure GTX880m

I'd go with the 780M SLI to be able to play immediately. Concerning the 8xxM series, the drivers aren't that good yet.

I will also go with the 780M SLI because 8XXM series isn't really worth the upgrade.

The benchmarks didn't have a huge difference between the 780M and 880M.

I personally think you can try to overclock the single 780M and get the same performance as the single 880M.

SLI, in a laptop, seems great -- but I am regretting getting SLI and not getting a single card that was slightly more powerful (but less than SLI). SLI has caused nothing but nightmares with frame sync issues / stutter, required flashing bios, etc. My 2¢ for what it's worth. :)
