  1. I have a setup almost identical to this build: 1. AKiTiO Thunder2 PCIe Box 2. EVGA GeForce GTX 750Ti with G-SYNC Support 2GB GDDR5 128bit, Dual-Link 3. GameMax GM450 OEM (GM-450) - 450W power supply 4. Macbook Pro Retina 13 (2013) I installed the latest drivers from the EVGA website. I connected external display via HDMI and can see my card in Device Manager. The problem is under a smallest load (starting a game or Unigine Heaven test), the whole system freezes, picture from the external display disappears, although fan on graphic card is still going. Any ideas how this can be fixed? I took power from the Molex connector. Could that be the problem?
  2. Hello everyone! I finally got my eGPU setup working after many endless hours, and decided to write and implementation guide for users struggling with similar setups. Notebook Details 13" Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E330 i3-3120M 2.5Ghz HD4000 iGPU 8 GB RAM Windows 8.1 eGPU Gear EXP GDC Beast v8.0 eGPU adapter with mPCIe cable lead 450W Corsair CX450M PSU Gainward GTX 670 Phantom edition 2GB GDDR5 225W TDP Performance Results will include later Now for the build itself... Implementation Guide As Lenovo Thinkpad Edge's TOLUD is 3,5GB leading to Windows error 12, and Lenovo is well known for using whitelisting, the build might seem like a lost cause. However when there is a will, there will eventually be a way. 1.Error 12 !!! DO A BACKUP FIRST !!! To overcome the error 12 I followed the guide on this thread: Windows 8.1 and 10 users please note that you have to run the following command as and Admin user in command prompt bcdedit -set TESTSIGNING ON 2.Whitelisting Now we only have to overcome the whitelisting. The only way to overcome it elegantly is with a bios mod. However you are only able to install bios mod if you have bios version 1.09 or older as Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E330's bioses 1.12-> have EEPROM write protection thus installing a bios mod requires certain flashing device and an skilled user. As bios modding is a dangerous thing to do, and can lead into a seriously overpriced paperweight (your laptop!!), I myself didn't feel the urge to do it. I settled for hotswapping: Boot the laptop with whitelisted WIFI card attached > Boot into setup 1.30 menu > hit F5 > carefully remove the WIFI card and attach the eGPU and voila! Setup 1.30 should now detect your eGpu 3.Booting to windows After succesfully completing a DSDT override, and overcoming the whitelisting, now what is left to do is to boot into Setup 1.30 (using above hotswapping method or not if you have a bios mod) and run a pci compaction 36-bit on eGPU and then chainload to windows and start gaming (YEAHH!!!! THAT'S RIGHT BITHCES) #OPTIONAL# (4.Almost forgot) As Lenovo Thinkpad Edge E330 has an half-miniPCIe slot I removed a tiny piece of plastic to make the EXP GDC mPCIe adapter fit better #OPTIONAL# I myself got a huge gaming boost out of this and enjoyed doing it, however your mileage may vary... Thanks to: @Tech Inferno Fan for setup 1.30 and eGPU threads @angerthosenear for DSDT override guide
  3. Intel just unveiled Thunderbolt 3.0 with USB-C connector. This is what they say about external graphics.. Looks good for the future of Thunderbolt eGPU! Full press release here: https://thunderbolttechnology.net/blog/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-does-it-all Here's an Intel video of prototype TB3 notebooks running egpus. Intel are definitely onboard with egpu support.
  4. Is there a way to use eGPU on external display with lid closed in Windows 10? Because if I close the lid now, the system starts lagging badly. Even simple animations like opening a folder or making a selection with a mouse are dramatically slow. How to eliminate this performance drop, when closing a lid?
  5. Hello. I am trying to setup this configuration but I am not very sure about the internal display working on Ubuntu. Although the wiki page for optimus mentions that this technology works for Windows and Linux. But I am yet to find any implemention of this setup. Would welcome your valuable suggestions.
  6. Thanks in advance.. My egpu is not working at full power after i recently completely uninstalled all drivers and re installed them.. I have a work around which is just doing a clean uninstall and reinstalling the drivers. it is getting tiresome every time i boot up my computer or the display turns off it messes up, please help!! i have a dell e6420 which has an intel 3000 and a nvs 4200m integrated,(gtx 660 external) but this problem arised after i clean uninstalled and the nvs 4200m appeared back in my display adapter list i'm not sure what happened and it seems like the graphics cards are working but the gtx 660 is only working about %35 .. any help or ideas are welcome!
  7. So Oculus just announced it's Optimal Specs for running the rift today. I'm not an expert with hardware, but given that we have a decent Quadcore CPU, would notebooks running GTX970 eGPUs be ready for VR? Or will the bandwidth bottleneck take a huge hit in performance and render an unacceptable VR experience? Thoughts anyone? Especially to those with a rift developer kit.
  8. anyone seen this? http://www.netstor.com.tw/_03/03_02.php?MTE2# with 3 pcie slots it looks like it could fit a graphics card without having to bend the case or have another enclosure.... no word on pricing yet though..
  9. I have a problem with setting 1.3. when i disable my dGPU, it stopped. not freeze but didn't do any progression. so i did another one, demoting my dGPU and when i demote my dGPU, it didn't go to main menu... Do i need usb boot? If i have to,how do i make usb bootable 'DIY eGPU setting 1.3'??
  10. I am new to e-GPU, and am not to sure if my laptop can handle it (sorry if this is in the wrong forum). I currently have an Alienware M15x (Please see the spoiler for a pic, because I know that sometimes people get that one confused with the older model m15 model). It has a Core I7 740QM and an open Express card slot, with the option of removing the WiFi card and run a network cable to my router if needed. Is this able to handle an e-GPU, because I read in another forum (but it was slightly confusing) that it was not able to work. I would just like some clarification on this please.
  11. I made EGPU system with MBPR 13' Late 15 + GTX 960 + Akitio Thunder 2, windows 8.1 bootcamp Actually, I played Over Watch once just after I made the system. However, I cleaned up the NVIDIA driver for some reasons and I can't install it now. (used DDU) Windows detects the eGPU and I can start the installation. However, after the reboot step of installation, Mac doesn't reboot itself and it turns black ( even it can't turn on the display back light.) (while I don't disconnect the TB cable). When I disconnect the Thunder Bolt and select Windows booting, it boots but can't cognize the graphic card. I thought it is because of uncompleted installation of driver. Then, how can I complete the drive installation or solve the whole problem?
  12. I want to get an egpu setup going on my F555LA, but I have a few questions and one major roadblock. First, the roadblock. I have no idea where the wifi card is inside the laptop, and therefore can't get to the mPCIe port the adapter needs. Also annoying is the fact that in order to open it up you have to remove the keyboard, but that isn't to big of an issue though because I won't be using it or the track pad when it's hooked up. Questions: Has anyone set up an eGPU on this model or any ASUS laptops? Which adapter should I get? Which GPU should I get? Are eGPU's reliable? Laptop's specs for those who need to know. Processor: i5 5200u iGPU: intel hd 5500 RAM: 12gb HDD: 500gb OS: WIN 10
  13. Hello everyone. First of all, thanks everyone for the time. I just buy this EXP GDC Beast material. and it's not working . My laptop is a Lenovo G400s with only embedded graphics Intel video adapter ( R) HD Graphics 4000 When I boot the notebook with all in place, it just show a black screen without any sign of activity. The BIOS Lenovo Notebooks is normally locked, with only a few options availabe . What can I do? If helps, I can take photos, numbers and others things I'm open to ideas.
  14. I want to share this experience with all. finally I am using eGPU with my Lenovo Y580. performance is amazing and I also tested 3D Mark fire strike and GPU score is 11280. Notebook 15" Lenovo Y580 HD4000 iGPU + GTX660M dGPU i7-3630QM @ 2.4Ghz CPU 8GB RAM 120GB Evo 850 SSD Windows 8.1 64-bit eGPU hardware EXP GDC Beast mPCIe Gigabyte GTX970 G1 Gaming Corsair CXM500M External LCD Benchmark 3dmark-FS.gpu=11280 Full Setup tutorial Enable using internal LCD for windows 10 Videos: benchmark between old dGPU and new eGPU
  15. Hi all, Can you finally resolve that situation with Rominator or we will be having just OS X support for eGPU on that machine ? That makes the whole community loosing a really valueable discovery. macOS Sierra has eGPU support out of the box. Now we need just Windows.
  16. I'm trying to give my old 15" Asus X54C laptop some gaming life with a EGPU. The setup i have: ASUS x54c Intel CPU/GPU [Mini PCI-E Version] V8.0 EXP GDC Beast Laptop External Independent Video Card Dock Radeon R7 240 2GB DDR3 ram (I will buy a better one after i get this to work with the laptop) What i did until now: I connected the adapter, the power supply, the PCI-E cable to the PCI-E wifi card slot, Monitor to the R7.... After booting up the laptop the fan of the power supply and graphics card start to spin and the adapter emits a blue light showing that it is "working" PROBLEM: Black screen on laptop and external monitor. If i power on the setup after windows boot the card is not recognised in device manager. I tried to hot swap the wifi card with the setup and the card showed up in the device manager but i wasn't able to make it work even after instaling drivers, rebooting and hot swapping again. Please Help!
  17. I have two 2015 Macbook Pros for which I am considering building eGPUs. I had an interesting idea, though - could I use 1 PSU, 1 Cougar Case QBX, and put two graphics cards inside, then hook both Macbook Pros up through it, to external displays? I'd also like to put 2 SSDs in the case and boot through them, if possible. Cheers, and thank you in advance!
  18. Hi there, just a short thread to give you some inspirations. My setup consists of: Macbook Pro Retina 15" Late 2013 OSX + Windows 10 EVGA GeForce GTX 960 Superclocked ACX 2 Akitio Thunder2 PCIe Box Dell-DA2 PSU Dell U2311H Display Samsung TV and Onkyo Receiver Steam Link XBOX One Controller / XBOX 360 Controller Apple Thunderbolt Gigabit-Ethernet Adapter I spend almost 30€ on Adapters and Cables, Crimps etc just to find out that it does not work well and it does not take much to get a sleek and simple design. You just have to be brave enough and willing to cut the Dell PSU The cut Dell-PSU. White is 12V, black GND, blue needs to be shorted against GND, red is not required and can be cut or isolated. I don't know whats that blank is for, so I just cut it. There is some additional cable from 1x 12V and 1x GND to be connected to the Akitio's Power Supply, I don't use the Barrel-Plug anymore. I drilled a hole (about 10mm width) right above the Power Connection. Intelligent people put the cable through the housing first, other (like me) have to force it Cables go under the board, there is about 1 cm of free space. Now it's time to solder the boards power supply. (No pictured) The tiny pins can be bought at Ebay ("PCI-E Pins"/ "PSU Power Connector Pins"). There are also "Wire End Sleeves"with crimp-able necks available which might work as well but I didn't try them. You might give them a try too . Doesn't look good but fits well. I use the lower plastic parts of one PCI-E 8 Pin Power Adapter to make the Pins fit in there, otherwise they would slip out the plug. Holes drilled for better cooling. The front Fan is still connected and blows air into the housing. The GPU Fan presses it out through the selfmade holes. Final and simple Setup, I'am streaming the games over network to my Steam Link. I still need to try if I can connect the TB-Ethernet Adapter to the back of the Akito. best regards kos
  19. Hey guys. So I got this far. Connected the laptop HP EliteBook 8460p i5 2450M to this ASUS Geforce GTX 750 Ti 2GB GPU via an express card /34 And this resulted in my laptops display not initialising which was to be expected I recall reading on different threads here. My second monitor is using hdmi so I tried hdmi on the gpu and also connected a hdmi to dvi adaptor to the laptop and sadly the monitor never detected anything, Can anyone help make sense of this with me? BTW I connected the egpu while the laptop was off. Then powered the laptop on
  20. Hello fellas. This is my 3rd eGPU setup. I had an Akitio and Sonnet III-D setup before. By far, I think this is the easiest setup I had compared to the previous two. Maybe because I am not just too adventurous of adding extra effort with creating or dealing with molex-barrel plug and riser. That is just me. Again, it will be to someone's preference towards their eGPU setup. Got a last pair from a certain seller of this Rocketstor TB2 at Amazon for 218$ two weeks ago. Current price right now is around $234 +/- The setup is pretty straight forward similar to @Scooter's setup. I removed the 2 molex cables from the two board and replace it with the molex cables from the PSU. I bent the fan section of Rocketstor to accommodate the length of my GTX 970. For the reason that I don't have to remove the board from the case. I'll look for some small and clean enclosure in the future to house my setup. The Hardware Mac Mini Late 2012 on OSX El Capitan 10.11.4 GTX 970 SC 4GB Highpoint Rocketstor 6361A Corsair CX500 (80) Paper clip method Shitty monitor for now After putting the hardware together, I just have to run @goalque's automated eGPU script and everything went smoothly!
  21. Hello tech inferno! This is my first post here. This seems the place to be for info on setting up eGPUs. I've done some research, and I'm pretty sure I'm willing to take the plunge down the eGPU rabbit hole. Here's my idea: Since I love the idea of having all my stuff on one sleek, organized computer, I would like to have a 15 inch macbook pro (2015) with an external 'docking station' of sorts that houses hard-drives, a disk drive, and extra ports (usb, ethernet, ect.), and of course, a powerful gpu. I would have two thunderbolt cables: one for the graphics and one for everything else. I would like the external docking station to be housed entirely within a cooler master elite 120 white that I have laying around. The thing is really good looking and seems to be the perfect size. I have attached some pictures of the case for reference. I would like to put the power supply, the graphics card, the hard drives, and the disk drives in their natural places in the case, and I would also really, really like the egpu to work in both windows and mac. It would be cool to have the ports on the case work, but this is in no way necessary. Questions: Will this work? What is possible and what is not? Will the macbook retina with the AMD Radeon R9 M370X be ok for egpu, or should I stick with the iris-only? Any help would be appriciated, as I am eager to learn, but a total noob on egpus. thanks so much, Hunter
  22. Ok so I do I lot of work on Rhino 3D, Sketchup and too Revit. I also use Maxwell and sometimes VRay for rendering. My current 15" Macbook pro with Iris pro graphics really sucks for this. When I move models around they get laggy and often freeze and crash. I do expect rendering to always take a while. Should I go with the Thunder2 and a GTX 970 with a PSU or would I be fine with the built in AMD R9 m370X of the higher priced macbook. The GTX kills it on benchmarks however the GTX requires a PSU and its hard to take around.... Thanks!
  23. Hi all, First of all I would like to take a moment and write my history with this experience. Last year I had a Dell Precision M4500 (i7-720QM and nVidia Quadro FX880M) which it had to be my eGPU machine. But using FL Studio alot, the cpu didn't kept the pace so I had to make a change. My research got to my Thinkpad T430 because Ivy Bridge platform can get you up to 90% of peak performance of your eGPU solution. When I had my Dell M4500, I have ordered the EXP GDC V8 Expresscard solution at a pretty fair and decent price (Christmas sales) from Banggood. Shipping to Romania was quite long, almost 2 months. In the meantime bought from a local guy, a Dell DA-2 220W power adapter which I heard it is plug'n'play. After arrival, I found out that I don't have the PCI-E power adapter for the graphic card, in my case a Gigabyte Radeon 6850 OC 1GB. That's the only card I have so, I was aware that I might need a display monitor. After another months of searching, found out on Banggood the holy PCI-E adapter specialy for EXP GDC solution. To be assured , bought 2 cables (just in case ) because the shipping was 1 month and 2 weeks (long, I know!). Well, last night I was dying to fire it up, so I put my Panasonic TV ( don't have a display monitor, lame, I know...) and put all cables and adapters together, the expresscard in T430 and fire it. My specs : i7-3610QM, 16GB HyperX Impact CL9, 1600x900, Intel HD4000 iGPU, Windows 7 64bit. After Windows loaded, my Radeon 6850 was found in Device Manager but I got the famous "Code 12" error. The device cannot start because it does not have enough resources. After 5 minutes of google-ing I found my solution! Solution : Shutdown your T430, put the expresscard in the laptop and the most important thing, DISCONNECT the display monitor from the graphic card. Start you laptop and let Windows load. The magic will happen, your graphic card starts with no errors. After that, install the drivers from AMD website. I have installed the Crimson drivers. Connect the monitor to the graphic card and voila! , you have a fully working eGPU solution on your Thinkpad T430. Still didn't found a solution for the following issue. In device manager, I had the Radeon 6850 and Intel HD 4000. When I started my Steam or Origin games, the main GPU was Intel HD 4000. My quick solution was to disable from device manager, the Intel HD 4000 iGPU. Maybe someone found a solution to install AMD Enduro (Switchable graphics) like Nvidia Optimus? I will post later this day, some pics with my tests. So far I have tested Furmark and i got 35 FPS. Battlefield 3 on ultra setting at 1280x720 (the maximum resolution of my TV) runs flawess. GTA V needs more tweaking. My i7-3610QM cpu got maximum temp of 80 degrees C in games. Edit1 : Here are some pictures of my setup including the docking station (is the 170W version with USB 3.) http://imgur.com/a/DpV6t So, this is all about till now. Thanks for reading!

    MSI GT72S-6QE

Hi. Guys. I am planning to buy MSI GT72S-6QE next week as thats my avail budget, and to be honest that will be my last big investment for at least 6 years. As egpus are not anymore just made DIY and OEMs are interesting in this model I did some research whether this laptop will have some hope for egpu. I found some topics, some old but as I am not much experienced and techie I want to ask you people if you know if there will be some sort of Dock for desktop grade GPU card compatible with this model over Thunderbold 3 connection. This articles bellow stated that it potentially could support any laptop with Thunderbold 3 port but I just want to check with you guys if anyone tried that. For example with Razer Core http://www.polygon.com/2016/3/18/11257690/razer-core-laptop-support-portable http://www.pcworld.com/article/3019369/hardware/the-razer-core-can-boost-any-thunderbolt-3-equipped-laptop-with-an-external-gpu.html However when I read official product website http://www.razerzone.com/store/razer-core It stated that currently support only Razer laptops so far Thunderbold technology website states that this laptop is certified for egpu solution. Anyone tried Razer Core ?
  25. Do you plan to purchase a new gaming notebook in the next few months? If so, which brands are you considering and why? Additionally, with the release of Thunderbolt 3 and external enclosures like Razer Core coming to market, is this a contender for you vs a dedicated gaming notebook that is thicker and weighs more?
