  3. I'd wager that there is still something else wrong with your notebook. 93C is a bit too high yet.....Perhaps your heatsink doesn't have enough contact pressure with the GPU or you don't have sufficient heatsink compound there. Those are the only 2 guesses I have regarding that unfortunately, without being there to look at it.

  4. Is your current BIOS anything newer than A05? If so, read http://forum.techinferno.com/alienware/2252-information-about-bios-updates-a07-a08-higher-m14xr2-m17xr4-m18xr2.html first. And then read http://forum.techinferno.com/alienware-m17x/1978-%5Bm17x-r4%5D-bricked-bios-fix.html.

  5. you remember the guy in the clevo thread who had the x7200. DGDXGDG or something or the other. remember he did those super mods to his 580m's? i was trying to find that thread. bottom line..he did all that extra modding and it looked great and seem to be unstoppable...till an alienware came by and smacked that mod silly. with his modded psu and cards. http://www.3dmark.com/compare/3dmv/3870295/3dmv/3404152 here goes some of his mods. http://s1086.beta.photobucket.com/user/DGDXGDG/library/

  6. chances are very good it is the vbios. but you want to be able to see the card should you flash it. once you flash it in the msi, chances are it wont boot anymore till it's put in the alienware. speculations of course.

  7. Hey all, brand new to the forum. Found you while troubleshooting my brand new m14x. Hope to be a good contributor and have posted the (as yet) unreleased m14 a10 bios update in another thread which fixes the nvidia issue. Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2

  8. Perfectly, You need to replace the resistor 524 (22K as I recall) to a higher (25K-30K).

  10. Look at 7870 performance below: http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/2109-diy-egpu-experiences-%5Bversion-2-0%5D-20.html#post30509 The 7870 outperforms the similarly powerful 660 on just an x1.2 link, and that's with optimus running. In the old x2 benchmarks, a x2.1 ATI card had a hard time vs an equally powerful x1.1opt Nvidia card, let alone a x1.2opt Nvidia card. Judging by Nando's results above, it looks like AMD recently added PCI-E compression. I know little about this except for what I'm seeing in benchmark results, and Nando could probably add more since he has access to a 7870. Maybe only the 7k series benefits while your 6k would not, I don't know. Either way, x2.2 from thunderbolt is a decent chunk of bandwidth, and will perform well even if there is link compression or not. In regards to plug and play and TOLUD, I am not aware of any reason for thunderbolt to be more problematic than a strait PCI-E connection through mpci-e or expresscard.

  11. I'm not familiar with the M18x POST codes, I assume 8 beeps is video card error? So far I've removed the GPU several dozen times in my system, and sometimes I got an error which indicated that the GPU is preventing the system from POSTing. Seems to be the same for you as it works when using the Intel iGPU. The MXM connector can be pretty delicate, most of the times it helps to simply remove the card, maybe clean the pins with rubbing alcohol or similar and then put it back carefully. One time I had to reseat a card about 5 times in order to get it working. I suppose you don't have any ESD protection... so at least make sure you peform a proper power drain before you do anything inside your machine.

  12. last thing to try. if you have the unlocked bios, then you can do this. under the video menu in the bios is a section that says what to boot. set yours to boot sg mode. then reboot back into bios to make sure it set. then shut down and add card one more time. then boot back into bios and see if you can see the card there. if you can see the card, then it can be flashed using this method and svl7 can help out, but if you can not see the card, then you would have to flash it from your other machine. speculation of course. provide the card is still working and all. and is still working in the machine it got pulled from. also check backplate to make sure it's insulated around the screw holes. you should have yellow tape on at least 2 of the 4 holes.

  13. trying booting intel graphics first. once on intel graphics, then shut down and add the 680m. do not put the whole machine back together first.you can use a usb keyboard and only need to attach the video cable and something to insulate the power button. (for safety) then try to power it on. sometimes you may need to pull out two memory sticks. don't ask me why, because i have no clue. these are just potential work a rounds you can try before trying to flash the card

  15. I make this thread for people who have bricked their bios on their r4(not the vbios), since the release of the A05 I have seen multiple people bricking their bios. The solution to this problem is really easy. Go to Drivers en downloads | Dell [Nederland] and download the .exe file. Use winrar to extract this file, you will have a file named like this QBR00EC.fd, rename it to M17R4.hdr. Now format an USB stick to fat/fat 32, and ONLY put this file on it. We are almost done!!! Unplug the battery from your laptop and be sure the power adapter is not plugged in, and put the USB in the eSate(NOT USB SLOT). Now hold the end button and plug in the adapter, your alienware should come back to live now!!!! It will beep some times and restart few times. Note: Leave CMOS battery in, or it wont work Thanks to SVL7/Brian, clearing things up for me, just go back into bios flashing
