With the release of NVIDIA's new 10 series graphics cards, they have ushered in a new era where full desktop cores are ported to gaming notebooks. One would think we are living in a golden era of notebook gaming but that couldn't be further from the truth as these new Pascal graphics cards are no longer offered in MXM format by NVIDIA and instead it is left up to Clevo and other OEMs to design their own modules. Unfortunately, as of right now, these modules are proprietary and offer no backward compatibility with recent notebooks that used MXM modules like the 980.  -Brian

    looks like some serious firepower there... hopefully those cores will be embedded on some mxm 3.0.... but i wont hold my breath...

      Hi Everybody,
       
      I am the owner of a HP elitbook 8770W, an old but still very decent notebook.
      I've upgraded the GPU several times , first with a GTX 970M and a while later with a GTX 1070 mobile.
      I've bought those cards from pretty reliable sources (a seller on Ali I know pretty well) and I knew beforehand that the cards were compatible with my 8770w.
      Unfortunately, my 1070 broke down due to heating issues.
       
      Now I can get my hands on a Quadro P5200. The original ones don't have a EEPROM chip soldered on the board, and rely on the notebook VBIOS.
      However, the one I want has a BIOS chip soldered on the board with a HP max-q bios, which would be perfect for me.
      Well, if it's compatible of course.
      The seller cannot give me a statisfactory answer to that and I'm not sure they are willing to refund me if this is not the case.
       
      Now on to my concrete questions:
      Does the build-in notebook VBIOS matter if there is a chip with a bios on the mxm card itself? If it does matter, since my notebook does recognize other pascal cards like the 1070 and 1080, is it wild to assume that a P5200 will also be recognized? They all seem to have a 86.04.x.x.x BIOS. Is there any way to check the notebook VBIOS compatibility against the one on the card?

      Here you find modified VBIOS versions for the mobile parts of the Nvidia 'Maxwell' series.
      The VBIOS versions in this post are tweaked for performance and versatility. You'll get almost complete control over the performance parameters of your GPU.

      Flashing:
       
      - Go to the device manager -> 'Display Adapters' -> chooser your GPU, right click on it and choose disable
      - Flash the VBIOS with mnvflash, a modified version of nvflash (see attachments). Here are detailed instructions for nvflash in case you aren't familiar with it.
      - After the flashing is done: Enable the GPU once again in the device manager.
      - Reboot
       
      Do NOT use driver 347.09, it's broken and useless and won't allow you to overclock, even with the stock firmware.
      Don't distribute the files hosted here outside of Tech|Inferno. Don't modify the files you download here.

      TL;DR: we have a Clevo that runs a desktop CPU, one with those huge 82 Wh batteries. We remove the GPU and let it use the CPU's integrated graphics. How much time for the battery to go from 100 to 0? Is it comparable to an ultrabook's?
       
      I'm theorizing a mobile set with a static eGPU and an upgradable CPU. Given a hypothetical user that needs fast processing on the go and long battery life while retaining very high degrees of mobility, but at home wants a powerful machine to run most games, I guess that would be their best bet. It would surely be more convenient to keep everything in the same disk. And even though the thing would be quite heavy to carry around, changing CPU would be more cost-efficient than changing an entire laptop. (Not sure if I'm right here, and also I'm not sure whether the motherboard in a Clevo would be replaceable when the new CPU needs a different socket, which is another reason why I'm asking here.)
       
      If my above guesses aren't correct, then an ultrabook with Thunderbolt and without a dedicated GPU would be a better choice. If they are, then we would be carrying more weight in exchange of a more cost-efficient setup, which I think would be a fair tradeoff.
       
      Also I am aware of the heating problems that these laptops suffer from, at least compared to a desktop setup. Would they be solved by moving the GPU out of the chassis, and instead plugging it with an eGPU dock via Thunderbolt port?
       
      What do you think? Is it doable? If not, why?

      I installed an NVIDIA Quadro P4000 Max-Q in a Clevo P750DM-G.
       
      Device manager hardware ID shows:
      PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1BB7&SUBSYS_75021558&REV_A1
       
      I have done the standard inf file mod, then disabled driver enforcement as I have done successfully in the past, but it's not working this time. The install starts, then fails less than half way through. I have tried the DCH version, standard version, and studio versions and none of them will work. I am probably missing something. Could it be the result of the vBIOS?

      So I just recently bought a used ORIGIN PC EON17-X. with CLEVO P775DM-G in it. I wanted to know if its possible to upgrade it with CLEVO P775TM1-G so I can have something like an RTX series in it. I wonder if its possible? Clevoparts does sale CLEVO P775TM1-G. Any expert can help? and what kind of things i would have to consider before following such a plan, what kind of hurdles? Any help is really appreciated.
