  1. GPU throttling issues can be fixed by turning off "Adapter warning" in the BIOS. As for the driver part, you'll have to mod the nvidia inf if you want to install the newest drivers, eurocom did that with some older drivers but since new drivers carry updated .inf's you'd have to do it all over.
  2. Those temps are perfectly acceptable for a laptop. But still a bit on the high side, my i7 3940xm has temps like that as well. What did you repaste with and how much did you put on it?
  3. The m17x r4 is the best laptop, I've had mine for about 5 years and it's still standing strong. The r5 is slightly more updated but the new design looks awful compared to the r4. I'm not sure if a 1080 would work in any of them, nobody has tested this before. But since the 1060 and 1070 work fine there's a big chance the 1080 will work fine as well. Though I'm not sure if the mxm connector from the m17x board can deliver enough power to the 1080
  4. A BIOS can't corrupt out of nowhere, unless you were trying to update it or install an unlocked version it could not go corrupt. Now according to the alienware website, 7 beeps means there's a problem with your CPU, but it's very rare that CPU's die so it's probably your motherboard. If you have the alienware 17 r3 and not the m17x r3 then it's going to be quite hard to replace it due to that soldered BGA trash.
  5. That's quite impressive, it keeps surprising me what we can do with these god created laptops. Next time I'll do my homework better.
  6. The intel gpu can power an external 120hz monitor but not the internal 120hz monitor. For the laptop to boot it requires the screen to work for it to POST, but since the 1070 is dead it wouldn't give a screen thus it wouldn't boot to windows. My external 144hz screen runs fine on the 7970m, but the internal 120hz screen doesn't work with the 7970m.
  7. An m17x r4 motherboard wouldn't fit in the R3 and neither would it function without the proper cpu and cables. The motherboard from the R3 just doesn't support uefi, there's no bios that can fix this since it was never a built-in feature, unlike the m14x r2, m17x r4 and m18x r2. I did find a guy who got a 980m working in an m15x (doesn't support uefi as well) but I have no detailed information on that so it's a shot in the dark. http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/970m-m15x.766985/ http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/980m-gtx-nvidia-card-on-m15x.805544/#post-10539414 maybe these threads might help you
  8. [Update] the 1070 is dead, going to buy something else.
  9. I think your laptop can only detect the Igpu from the intel cpu. Either try using the FN+F7 method to switch to dedicated gpu (7970m) only or use the unlocked bios to set video mode to "PEG"
  10. It is seated 100%, the HD7970m works fine without the 3D screen, there's no pressure on the 1070 anywhere nor does it contact anything outside the heatsink. I know that the intel onboard doesn't work with the 120hz screen that's why I allowed PEG to run the video card only.
  11. Hello everyone, a couple of weeks ago I bought the 1070 from an0npl4y who did an amazing job with writing a great guide on how to install it, unfortunately it has not been working for me so far.. I've already tried contacting several people but their solutions give no results. Every time it gives me 8 beeps which means an LCD failure, the LCD is brand new, still has the plastic on it bought from here So yeah I'm desperate to get it to work so far I've tried a few things: 1st: use the fn+f7 method to switch to gpu only, gives me 6 beeps. 2nd: after no success with the fn+f7 method I installed the unlocked bios, full uefi, display setting on PEG, and "Always enable PEG" turned ON, gives me 8 beeps 3rd: remove the card, remove the cmos battery, hold f2 while starting up, bios defaults, insert the card, put it on PEG, Always enable PEG ON, and full uefi (disable load rom legacy, disable fast startup, disable windows 8 fast boot) again 8 beeps. Does anyone have an idea of what I can try? Buying a new 1070 or 120hz screen would be the last resort option but unfortunately I can't conclude what's broken or if it's a bios option.
  12. I personally don't think this cpu is supported :-/
  13. Are you sure that's an i7 3940xm? The serial number of the 3940xm is SR0US, and I can't find your cpu anywhere
  14. I believe there's an option in the bios called "adapter warning" if you turn that off it shouldn't throttle the gpu unless it gets too hot. At least that's the case for my M17x, not sure if it works for the M14x but you could give it a try :-)
  15. Oh, I was misinformed then, my bad.
  16. Where do you want to use the 765m for? It has half of the performance of the HD7970m, so if you're just using it for applications, sticking with the Intel HD graphics would be better. Since the 765 is not officially supported by DELL it might require you to mod the nvidia drivers, more about that here: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=377158 and https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/4055-guide-modding-nvidia-oem-inf-files/ You don't need the unlocked BIOS.
  17. I was pretty fortunate enough that I could buy one from a local guy who had two left from old DELL workstations for 230 euro. But there are some on ebay that get listed for 200-300 dollar, like this one http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-i7-3940XM-CPU-3-0GHz-Extreme-Quad-Core-SR0US-Laptop-Processor-/302342043789?hash=item4664fd788d:g:reQAAOSw5cRZNuys To be honest though, if your i7 works fine then there's not really a reason to upgrade, my primary reason for upgrading is that I want to completely build my laptop using the best parts, so I won't have to upgrade it ever again, and the i7 3940xm is the strongest cpu it can run (well with some special heatsink/fan mods) with a nice little overclock it'll make the i7 7820hk make a run for it's money
  18. the 3940xm can be overclocked to about 4,2 ghz, then it's a bit better than the rest. Not a lot better but still better, and for a build where I try to get the best parts possible the i7 3940xm is the perfect candidate. At least for myself since my i7 3610qm wasn't overclockable.
  19. I don't think that the i7 3740qm is overclockable, you can allow some tweaks so it goes up by like 0.1 or 0.2 ghz ( at least for my 3610qm) but if you really want to have the best cpu possible you should consider getting an i7 3940xm, it goes up to about 4.2 ghz. But be warned, it's an absolute hothead and without lapping the heatsink, adding an alienware m14x fan and adding extra heatpipes, it's going to get hotter than 90 degrees so you won't be able to run it without throttling.
  20. I'm convinced that it's a bug, the gtx 1060 desktop doesn't support SLI so why would the mxm variant support it? Not to mention, there aren't any laptops with a 1060 SLI configuration. I don't think it's possible, hardware and software wise.
  21. Too much thermal compound shouldn't have an impact on the cooling performance, Linustechtips tested this by using a lot of methods, such as a small pea, line and putting too much, the temps didn't vary a lot, 1 degrees each. Putting too less will increase thermals since less area is covered, I'm a bit wary of IC diamond since it leaves scratches on the heatsink surface
  22. I think that your laptop will only detect 1 of the 2 1060s, since SLI isn't supported, they'll never be able to communicate, even if you do solder an SLI bridge to the pins, there would be no software to make them communicate with each other. You'll probably end up killing one card.
  23. The Gtx1060 doesn't support SLI, only the gtx1070 and 1080 do. If you really want SLI, you could go for a dual 980m, if the motherboard supports it
