  2. I don't know how many of you heard of the Zeitgeist Movement. They have produced three very interesting documentary movies that deal with the corruption of the world goverments, the outdated and corrupted monetary system and lots of other very interesting issues. I can't say i agree with all of their claims, but nevertheless i found their movies extremely interesting to watch. You can access and download those movies for free here : The Zeitgeist Film Series Gateway | Zeitgeist: The Movie, Zeitgeist: Addendum, Zeitgeist Moving Forward I strongly advise you guys to watch it and i would really like to open a discussion about it here. I wanted to share an email i got from them couple of days ago. Let me know what you think.

  4. Hi Bruna, glad you finally joined up With reference to the OP: I agree with most points and did find it strange that an entire nation was celebrating the death of someone and the words "cultural psychosis" fits that description aptly. Did he need to be removed from the limelight? I'd argue that he already faded away over the past 10 years but remained a sticking point in American policy and that is precisely why he was eliminated--to bring a closure to the events of 9/11 in the minds of the American people. Many people on that day kept chanting, "it's over, it's over!" because his death was in fact a catharsis for a public that had become emotionally saddled by the media, he was the boogieman that haunted Americans for 10 years. Did he need to be captured or killed? Yes, his organization and views were a threat but the mass celebrations were surprising. Moving forward, I don't see terrorism going away, it will always be there as long as our national policy infringes on the sovereignty of others under the guise of security. Yes, there is a fraction of lunatics out there that wish to implement their extreme ideological ways on the rest of the world but I'd argue that nearly every country and/or group has such extremists in one way or another. Whether you are talking about Mexican gangs bent on an ideology of domination of drug trafficking through murder or cults that encourage arming their followers, you can find these fringe movements everywhere. I think the bigger picture is that each nation acts for its own self interest and in that context, the USA's presence in the mideast is self evident--it needs to protect its long term energy needs and in order to justify those costly ventures a distractor to satiate the public's outcry is constructed. Whether these misadventures benefit only a tiny group of the US populace (e.g. stock holders of energy companies, politicians and CEOs) or the nation as a whole remains to be seen but I'd argue that thus far, the public at large has not benefited at all. So in order to avoid mass riots about a failed economy, something must be done to distract the masses.

  5. I had the R3 in front of me for 3 weeks, believe me, it doesn't appear much smaller than the M17x-R2 in person. It's not some tiny slim machine, it's a monster as well. The biggest difference is the R3 is much lighter due to it's plastic + rubber construction. It's not like I'm only bringing this up now after I've ordered an M18x, Stam and Michael heard me complain about the M17x-R3's build quality over the course of the time I owned it. Awesome system for those that want a portable DTR that you can use on your lap but just not for me. For reference: Computer Model Alienware M18x Dimensions Height Front 53.0 mm (2.09 inches) Back 54.20 mm (2.13 inches) Width 436.0 mm (17.17 inches) Depth 322.0 mm (12.68 inches) Weight with 12-cell battery and optical drive (starting at) 5.41 kg (11.93 lb) Computer Model Alienware M17x-R3 Dimensions Height Front 44.5 mm (1.75 inches) Back 45.0 mm (1.77 inches) Width 410.0 mm (16.14 inches) Depth 304.0 mm (11.97 inches) Weight with 9-cell battery and optical drive (starting at) 4.26 kg (9.40 lb) It's wider with more depth as expected for a system with an 18.4" display and weighs more. The most important variable is thickness and that is only 0.3" which is not much.

  6. We can almost see the fine line between the right and wrong. The way we deal with matters like this is what defines us as human beings. War, Terror, Revenge, Greed, Grief and Hate are extremely powerful, dangerous and volatile feelings, and it is so sad and incredibly heartbreaking when a whole nation is motivated and stimulated by those feelings. We are far away from being free of all these, and from the people that use these feelings to rule us. But we are a different generation, we have a voice. Anyone can say what they feel and think, and together we change things. I just hope that we start to be more motivated in doing peace than just celebrating more terror. When I saw in twitter “USA killed Osama Bin Laden “my first tough was that they will retaliate, fear was my first reaction. Everybody wished him dead, but the way everything was done, it just promoted more hate, more fear, and a population in fear is controllable, and vulnerable. We are talking about United States of America acting like a bully, no justice was done, killing one symbol does not change things for good, just create a new martyr for a fanatic population. What did we get with this operation? A celebration in the streets, a virtual popularity to a President near of reelections; all the nations in maximum alert for a possible retaliation attack. Just more fear and more control and what will be done next? Who will they kill for justice when they attack again? These are the hard questions. He needed to die, period, not because justice had to be done. The world is lighter without someone like Bin Laden, but nothing good was done. On my opinion, technology is the only path for our salvation as specie. It connects people, brings us together as one nation, as population of one planet, we become global. And organizations as The Zeitgeist Movement , Wikileaks and The Venus Project brings another view for our future, it is enlightening.

  9. Samsung seems to have kept this baby up it's sleeves and little to no hype has been built on this product yet. The idea is this... Samsung is going to jump into the mobile market with this Series 7 Convertible Tablet. It's size 10.1" display at 1,366×768 resolution places it against netbooks all over. With the price listed at $649 you get an 8hour battery life (Samsung's latest claim), a mere 0.8 inches thick at 2.2 pounds, with Intels 1.5GHz Atom Z670 processor, 2GB of memory, 32GB of storage and Windows 7 Home Premium we can definitely expect some competition from the netbook market and even the tablet market... but not meant to be a full fledged tablet... so no it isn't meant to compete against the Ipad. Check it out here. Samsung Series 7 convertible tablet coming soon | ZDNet

  10. Cheers, The first and major complaint about the M14x for most users is the noise it produces. I have found a very easy and common sense way to eliminate a majority of the noise. I can fully verify that this config is powerful enough for surfing, watching movies (even blu-ray) and general computing. It is NOT a gaming config and I doubt this machine will ever be quiet enough for gaming in a library. Step 1. Step 2. Step 3. Step 4. Step 5. Step 6. Step 7. Step 8. Step 9. Step 10. Step 11. Apply your settings and your good to go. One thing I have noticed is that the m14x and Windows 7 x64 do not seem to always take power corrections so what you may have to do is choose your power setting, do a quick reboot and then it will be in the correct power mode. Good Luck, StevenX

  14. Nobody knew about the M18x's display specs until Dell posted them today. So commenting on them would have been only speculation at best. We aren't saying the M18x is a bad buy but we are letting people know that the published contrast ratio + color gamut figures leave a lot to be desired for a flagship product. We would of course like it if Dell furnished us with test samples but thus far, they only seem to have a working relationship with a few select sites.

  15. Display specs have been updated to include the M18x. The M18x display is fucking pathetic: 400:1 contrast ratio, 300 nit brightness and 72% gamut, really Dell?

I do think it will help, even if a little - its better than anything. Its also unfortunate, a lot of idiots from the US are often selected in these videos as a "representatives" of american population.

  22. Congrats man, hope you get it fast! Question, wouldn't it be cheaper if you initially got the 4GB RAM and Windows home premium and upgrade them later on by yourself? Just a thought... This is the cost to upgrade from Home Premium to Professional: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/windows-7-upgrade-to-professional.aspx Dell asks you $150 instead (which is $60 more) Also Dell asks for 6GB to add $60 extra, while you could get the 4GB that come by default with the system + spend $50 for 4GB for a total of 8GB in your system, http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-MV-3T4G4-Laptop-1333MHz-PC3-10600/dp/B004BDOT7C/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1304494604&sr=8-5 or pay like $22 to get 2GB extra for a total of 6GB in your system http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-ValueRAM-PC3-10600-KVR1333D3N9-2G/dp/B0019MI1CW/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1304494604&sr=8-3 (those were found with a very fast search, probably you can find better deals) so you could save almost $80 that you could use for the backpack.

  26. Thanks a lot guys!! I really appreciate it. I finally found some time to tinker a bit with the fans.... though I have no real result yet, it was more testing some ideas. HWinfo32 is great and works perfectly for me, but automatic fan control is still a bit better since you don't have to remember to adjust the fans everytime you want to play a game or similar. I have not a lot experience with disassembling the BIOS, so I'm looking for an easy hardware mod. My goal is to keep it as simple as possible. The less parts involved, the more fail safe it gets... and anyway, there's not much space left in there There are four cables coming from the fan control board, red is +5V, black is ground (0V) and the others are PWM and tacho as far as I know. Strangely the fan connector has 5 cables, but only four are connected to the fan, one cable is disappearing under the shrink tube.. no idea whether it's a blind one or not, I didn't check (probably it is, let me know if you're better informed about this) The 5V are always available, they won't change... the fan gets controlled by the PWM, so I don't need to worry about getting the power from somewhere else on the board. Anyway, the most simple idea I had was using a NTC thermistor... this would be a neat solution as long as the resistance gets small enough when it heats up. I've done some testing and it seems to work more or less, but the resistance at load temperatures is still a tad too high, it seems that with the thermistors I have laying around the fan won't speed up completely. Also a problem will be to attach the resistor inside the system in way that it really heats up. The NTCs I have atm aren't quite flat, which isn't ideal. They need to heat up quick enough, I guess taping/sticking them to the heatpipe would be the only way. The second (also very simple) idea, is to use a small PCB thermostat which for example closes at 70°C and opens again at 50°C. With a small resistor and a second thermostat it would be possible to make a two point fan control... but imo the NTC thermistor would be the better solution as it results in a stepless speed control. I don't like cutting such tiny wires (the one leading to the fan) and then soldering them together again (with some parts in between) ... I'd rather desolder the wires from the board so that no cutting is involved, but I can't access the fan board. It's covered by the metal case of the fan. If it's possible I'm gonna carefully cut a piece of the metal case to be able to desolder the wires, but I don't have any tools for this... well, I'll see. Maybe I'm ending up cutting the wires, hahaha. (See the second pic to see where the cut is needed, also the pic on the very right shows that you can access the wires with the solder iron) First pic (from the left) shows some improvised testing If you have some input or (better) ideas, please let me know!! I'll check some datasheets to see whether I can find a better NTC thermistor. Edit: I just had a little idea... I could combine a thermostat and a thermistor (parallel), this way I could make sure it will run on full speed when the temp gets high enough and still have the fan running at lower temps... hmm. I just don't have such thermostats laying around atm, and they cost about $15 here, damn... lol thermistor is a way cheaper solution
