  1. wow! thanks for the update! i originally had heat issues, and i thought the heatsink was broken because the gpu heatpipe was not soldered to the cpu heatsink, but that makes sense, because you don't want the gpu heat spreading to the cpu as well. i simply repasted with some mx 4, and im getting around 60-70 on the gpu @ 1ghz, stock voltage, and around 80-85 on the cpu at stock voltage, with throttlestop on. i does occasionally hit 90, but it stops there (only if i'm doing 100% on the internal gpu, and high cpu usage). i haven't really pushed the gpu very far, mostly because it's working great atm, and i'm a bit hesitant as i know finding parts for them is getting rarer and rarer (still pissed i can't find a dvd drive or hdd bay with the right bezel, means im basically stuck with sli, or a big fat hole). i might go back and do the screw mod, since i too was unimpressed with the pressure on the heatsink, and i have some of those copper heatsinks on the way, as well as some new 1mm thick thermal pads for the vrms and vram. has anyone seen any flexing of the pcb because of the screws?
  2. i would love an update on the hardware mods you did Ghoul! some pictures of the actual ultrabay card would be nice, so we can see the approximate cuts that were made. my questions are: which would you recommend to lower ultrabay temps? a fan controller mod, or simply replace the fan? i honestly wouldn't know how to go about building a seperate fan controller that would rev the fan up higher than the board is allowing, and unless i can get some pretty detailed instructions on how to do that, i will forgo that option your mod seems more viable, but i would like a view of your card before i start cutting around my own . it also looks like you're using your own mesh on the bottom, and not just removing that dust filter; is that correct? also how did you undervolt and overclock the cpu? do you have an xm cpu in there? would love to hear back from you !
  3. what does the lenovo fast boot option in the bios do? is it worth it to activate any of the options pertaining to temp. monitoring that are disabled by default? can i activate acpi 3.0 safely? also, is it normal for the internal gpu to throttle istelf more than the ultrabay? for some reason the internal wants to stay at 845, when the ultrabay is at 940mhz.
  4. its the same ratio, also found another one thats the same tube as the kaster, so i might just get that. also, i want to check before i go through with it, if that pipe was even meant to be soldered on. since its the heatpipe for the gpu, and its further away from the fins than the cpu, maybe they didnt solder it on so that the cpu wont absorb the heat from the gpu? i dont know, i've just never seen that on a heatsink, usually they're connected all the way through, and i dont want to break it if thats the way its meant to be.\ in that case, i guess ill just repaste it, and hope that solves the reboot issues during prime95
  5. could this work as well? its closer to me and a lot cheaper. SMD BGA Lötpaste Lötzinn Solder Paste | eBay also, would a heatgun work? i dont have a toaster oven here, but the neighbor has a heatgun, and i could use his clamps as well. i don't know if one is enough, all i know is that the laptop shuts off after running prime95 for maybe 2 mins max. if its not that, then something else is wrong.
  6. wow, now im REALLY glad i found this thread. just took apart my y500 only to realize THEY FORGOT TO SOLDER ONE OF THE HEATPIPES. yes, thats right, one of them is just flimsily lying there, without solder, can't believe it. thing is, i bought it used, then had my parents ship it to europe where i'm studying atm. and the warranty ran out 4 days before it arrived :/. any tips on how to solder the pipe back on? what are you using (solder type, torch/heatgun etc), or is a thermal glue just as effective? if its way too much work, and you need a lot of specialized tools, i may just end up buying one off ebay or so, but it still pisses me off. the auctioneer also didnt say the psu was the 120w version which isnt enough for the sli graphics cards that the laptop needs . hopefully i can solve this pretty soon. here a pic of what i mean: imgur: the simple image sharer
  7. i after testing out my new laptop a bit, i've figured out that the auction i bought it from did not have the appropriate power adapter, as it came with the 120w. i know some people have bought the alienware/dell slimline psus, and then simply used an adapter, but i would like to know if i can use this adapter that is originally used in the asus g73/53 series. its rated at 19v, and 9.5a, so its got plenty of power, and the adapter is a perfect fit as well. from what i understand, these power supplies have a certain tolerance of about 5 % +/-, so i should be okay, i just want to make sure before i take the plunge. also, on a side note, should my processor reach high 90s while gaming? i've even gone up to 103, and its shut off because of it. i will probably repaste it, as it ran out of warranty (literally 4 days after the package arrived :/). i also had some issues with the boot loop at first, which i know think is partially the overheating issue, as it turns on after i let it cool down. thanks for any info you guys can give!
  8. thats incredible! i've seen a couple of cooling mods, but none that look that professional!
  9. I just received my y500 with sli 650m, and i was having a horrible time with random crashes, freezing, etc. i decided it would be easier if i just put in my samsung 830 ssd, and install windows 7. i still have the 1tb drive with windows 8 on it, but not install disks to reinstall from. i really want to use the 1tb as an external usb drive, so i'm looking for ways to potentially reinstall windows 8 (if i ever decide to) as close to oem as possible. i know windows 8 handles licensing differently, and i used this oem folder method before when reinstalling a sony, but i wonder; would it work on the lenovo y500 series with windows 8? any thoughts ? here is the link: Win 8.x • Win 7 • Vista - 'Multi-OEM' ISO Project
  10. could be a faulty unit, if you're using the special bluetooth driver from intel, it seems somethings wrong with the card. does the card technically support windows 7?
  11. as far as i know, the ultrabay cards are all the same from 400 to 500 series, just the bezel is different. this means with a bit of dremel work, it should fit. as for upgrading beyond the original specs, it wont work. you can only pair equal cards, 650 with a 650, 750 with a 750 etc. i forget where, but i do remember reading that certain(if not all) 410p and 510p had issues with buying an extra card. one guy said the laptop would not recognize the other card, and it turned out they changed the hardware, thus disabling sli on the laptops that were not bought that way.
  12. as far as i know, there is no such software. it may be possible to reverse engineer the lenovo energy program, and read what it does when it does a fan decluttering, as that revs up both fans to 100%.
  13. maybe try something like throttlestop? that fixed my issues on my old g74sx
  14. i've searched for a while, and i was unable to find something that gave me direct access of the fans. maybe, if someone were to snoop around the lenovo packages, they could find out what triggers the fans when you use the "clean dust" function.
