Y510p Cannot boot Linux from USB

Actually, You can boot Ubuntu 14.04 without disabling UEFI in the BIOS, but if you have the default Windows 8.1 installation, Ubuntu won't be able to recognize the partitions and when it install GRUB your lap wont boot again Windows.

If you install Ubuntu in UEFI mode ubuntu must install its boot files to EFI partition. Mine is under boot option in Boot menu when hitting F12 and also when it boots to grub it gives me option to boot to Windows. Thats out of the box after installing Ubuntu. No post installation of Grub or whatever. I used Rufus USB creator to create UEFI bootable installation of UBUNTU. No need to switch to legacy mode. At least not with latest ubuntu.
