Watch Dogs stutter

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Been playing Watch Dogs crazily lately, though it is more frequently coming up with stutters and sometimes even crashes the game, saying that NVidia display drivers crashed. Running the game on MSI GT70 on Win8 with 8gb RAM and stock GTX680m using NVidia recommended settings. Game running of SSD.

Kinda new to PC gaming, so looking for advice on PC / GPU performance mods or even game config settings.

Thanks

Unfortunately it's not optimized for pc hardware yet. If you do a quick search on google you'll see many people raging because of the low fps

Are your Nvidia drivers up to date? Like many have said online, the game isn't really optimized for the pc.

Watchdogs runs like shit on everything, especially on amd hardware. However, my laptop is similar to yours (gt70, 16gb 1600mhz, 4gb 675mx) and while I do get frequent fps drops while driving and overall bad performance, I never had the game crash on me.

red9350, thanks for the note, I have seen some stuff on google about the FPS. So I understand I may not be able to eliminate the stutter, although this has left me wondering if there are any mods / tweaks I can make to my laptop to minimise the impact. Or is it simply, in Watch Dogs case, purely an issue from the game side of things?

Watch Dogs is fairly graphic-heavy. Overclocking my gtx670m lets me play on high settings with little stutter (minus the nights with heavy rain). It's a mix of bad optimisation and power hungry graphics. Fingers crossed for some bug fixing updates!

I'd recommend the 'medium' texture quality if you want to avoid the texture thrashing problems. Watch_Dogs eats VRAM like its going out of fashion, I get these issues on the 'high' setting and I'm running 4GB VRAM.

Apparently they downscaled the game for the PC version and a modder was able to increase the graphics. You can check the kotaku link for more information. Might be worth a try to fix your problem

See Watch Dogs' Hidden Graphics Options In Action

I just installed this mod and it is has actually helped my graphics performance! Was running most settings on medium and still getting stutter, now on high for most and so far so good. Plus it's looking better to boot. Thanks for the tip!

I too have the same stutter problem with my gtx 680m. Will give that Hidden Graphics Options and go and see how that turns out.

OK, so have been playing around with graphic settings since installing this. Originally was running smooth on high textures and most other settings high, but dammit I want maximum playable graphics levels!! :eagerness:

So far, have got textures on Ultra, Graphics Quality all Ultra except DoF = Off, GPU buffer frames = 3, VSync =1, AA = SMAA. Still driving around testing though early results are promising! :Banane07:

Is anyone able to run this game with 1GB of VRAM?

Shouldn't be able to. 2GB minimum, 3GB recommended.

:39_002:

UpdATE: A bit more gameplay and discover stutter is still happening mostly noticeable during driving missions (e.g. fixer) with heavy traffic and/or rain. Sadly, texture setting returned to High, AA off, graphics quality as per High except DoF = Off, LoD and Shadows on Ultra. playable wtih only odd brief stutters, not enough to make me want to smash the PC.

Also, tried the uninstall / reinstall of NVIdia drivers, etc though don't see any noticeable improvement.

Guess this is it until I get round to updating vbios for extra OC.

I'm having the same issues. I even tried overclocking both GPU's and my had my CPU at 4.5ghz and was still getting stuttering everywhere. The only times it seemed to run smoothly was when driving for some reason

Massive amounts of stutter on high/ultra textures in vanilla. Using the Lunayah mod stutter is just about zero.

      3dMark11 Performance Preset Benchmark: http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/11262792

      Required items:
      1.) Lenovo u310 (I have a Core i3 - Ivy Bridge, 8GB RAM)
      2.) 65CN99WW unwhitelisted.
3.) eGPU (I used a EVGA GTX 750 Ti from another computer I had).
4.) EXP GDC mPCIe Edition adapter (got from eBay - banggood seller).
5.) ATX power supply (I used a 600W PSU from another computer I had).
      6.) USB wireless.
7.) External monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

      Steps:
1.) Obtain and install a unwhitelisted BIOS. If you are unable to obtain a unwhitelist BIOS, I think it might be possible to bypass it with Tech Inferno Fan's Setup 1.x (may need confirmation as I haven't used it myself yet.)
2.) Shutdown computer and remove all USB devices, ethernet cables, power cables, card reader cards.
3.) Remove mPCIe wireless card and detach antennas.

4.) Attach EXP GDC external mPCIe cable to the former wireless slot and screw down.

5.) Attach HDMI end of the mPCIe cable adapter to the EXP GDC device.

6.) Attach graphics card to the EXP GDC device (I moved my laptop off the desk and onto the side shelf to make room on the desk for the monitor/keyboard/mouse).

7.) Using the power cable adapters that came with the EXP GDC device, I hooked in my ATX power supply's 20 pin and CPU 4 pin cables. Then hooked the other end (8 pin) into the EXP GDC device. My EVGA 750 Ti also required that I use an additional PCIe power cable (6 pin) in the top of the card.

8.) Then I attached my misc devices (HDMI monitor, USB keyboard/mouse/wireless adapter), and hooked in my PSU and powered it on (below is image of final product, also moved HDMI cable out of the way).

9.) Power on your computer and let it install the standard VGA drivers and then install your drivers (I didn't have to go in the BIOS for any graphics settings, which it doesn't have anyways, nor did I have to disable iGPU in Device Manager before the card was added).

      Extra Info:
I found that most games will play on med settings with about 45 FPS with this particular card.
BDO: Upscale on - Anti Aliasing on - SSAO off - med settings.
      Skyrim: Med-High settings.
      Fallout 4: Med settings.
