  1. Yeah, I originally only looked at headsets. But then I came across the overclock.net article in their Hi-Fi sound section where they basically trashed the headsets so I did some research on their suggested gear and it looks like that I agree with their conclusion -- almost all of the decent headsets are simply not worth the price point. Because for the similar price you can buy a separate microphone and headphones of much higher quality than the ones on the headset. The reason I chose Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro is because: - I wanted a good bass (I often listen to Dubstep, Trance and similar bassy music) - I wanted the closed type headphones to minimize outside noise during gaming (even though I don't like the fact that its hard to hear if someone is knocking or ringing my doorbell - I actually like deeper sound even in games (explosions would sound really good), even though it might not give perfect mid and high tones that might be more relevant in many games... a personal preference I guess. As far as the surround sound goes: I had a decent 5.1 system back at home quite a while (~10 years) ago with I think Creative SB Platinum sound card -- it was the best card at a time. It was cool, but nothing I couldn't live without. In addition, I am not really playing FPSes that much (or at all) at the moment. In fact it's mainly go to be League of Legends, D3 and Dota2 in the near future so I don't think I really need/want surround. And I doubt the headphones would be able to give a good surround anyway; but I guess probably somewhat better than stereo. FIIO E7 DAC seemed kind of best bang for the buck when it comes to something portable and based on my amateur knowledge seemed sufficient. These will be my first hi-fi headphones, so I hope I am satisfied with them.
  2. I have a pretty good idea. It has few GB of fast NAND memory (500GB Seagate Momentus XT has 4GB NAND memory). It's the same idea of how any kind of cache memory on your computer works. Except that in this case it is quite a big cache memory. It has a I believe it's own controller that is supposed to figure out what data is being used more often and cache it in NAND. In other words, based on your usage it will attempt to predict what data from your hard drive will be accessed and have that stuff there for faster access. I am guessing a part of your Windows / Program Files folder will eventually end up there as a result. I am not aware of a possibility to use the NAND memory and the rest of the disk storage space separately as two separate drives (so I think it is not possible).
  3. Wow, these results are really good. This card converts the "old" M15x into a gaming monster!
  4. Yeah ok that doesn't sound good. It looks like some kind of hardware error, perhaps with the hardware responsible for lighting effects. I'd recommend *sigh*... giving them another call, especially if you can reproduce this error.
  5. *drool* Has there been any difference between engineering samples and production units? LOL @ boosting the CPU to increase the GPU score.
  6. svl7, is that with your milled copper cooler or the regular one? Very nice. Can't feel but nostalgic to the M15x systems simply due to its MXM slot. It's such a big upgrade potential when it comes to pretty much main purpose of these machines - gaming! EDIT: Oh, and ... moar pls! EDIT2: Can you also include where to buy a card and the price, if it's not a secret. Thanks!
  7. Just a short update. I just bought Fiio E7 USB DAC since I'll want to use it regardless of what exact headphones/headset I get and a Zalman On-Clip Microphone. I'll test this on-clip microphone first to see how it works and whether it will be sufficiently good for Skype calls and video chats (since it is omnidirectional). If this will work, I'll just buy some nice headphones and not a headset. It seems like headsets are much more expensive in comparison and I don't think they are worth the price. I'll keep this thread updated with my purchases and thoughts.
  8. Awesome! Since Logitech made this software, one would think that this would be pretty obvious to them. It's funny right... these days you get far better support from random people on internet forums then from the companies like Logitech.
  9. So I just arranged to sell my Steelseries Siberia to my friend's brother and I'll be looking for the new ones. Currently eyeing: Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro-80 Closed Studio Headphones **FULL WARRANTY** B3 | eBay Damn you, Jimbo. Damn you.
  10. Great! I don't like any of these fancy mice drivers but I guess you need to be able to use all the features you want. The way I use a mouse is following this guide: The Truthful Mouse Guide . I use standard Windows drivers, even though I did install Razer drivers for Deathadder first to setup the precise DPI; I think it's at 1000 DPI now (then uninstalled). Also you may want to try to disable any kind of mouse acceleration (in Windows the option is called "Enhance Pointer Precision"). Ironically, with that option turned off I found that my precision has increased SUBSTANTIALLY! Also, do not ever change the default setting for Mouse Sensitivity in Windows. If you want more/less sensitive mouse always change the DPI setting. I don't even use the mouse acceleration on my ThinkPad trackpoint either. It might feel weird at first, but once you get used it -- there is no going back. It's one of those things.
  11. Actually the same also happens to me. The secondary GPU runs a little hotter. The difference isn't that big, on the full load I think GPU0 is ~72 C, GPU1 around 75-77C. This was every since I repasted, but I actually haven't checked before. In your case however, it seems GPU1 was running at higher clocks for whatever reason. In my case they both ran at about 100% utilization with 700/1000MHz stock clocks.
  12. Wow that's pretty sweet. But, can you actually use the computer (run a game) on these clocks?
  13. Uh sorry to hear that. I know this is not the solution you are looking for but... since I have never played HoN and played a bit of League of Legends and Dota2 may I recommended those games instead? They both work perfectly fine on R2. One thing I can think of is that some game may lock at 60FPS if you enabled "vsync" to prevent possible screen tearing. Also I think I am using 12.3 Catalyst driver (not at home atm so I can't check).
  14. Hi Staff Sargent, What might be going on is that the Logitech software is using a fancy interface that might be using the GPU to render stuff and maybe that's why it doesn't switch back. Can you switch between GPUs if you simply close the Logitech Software? (make sure it's not running through the Task Manager)
  15. Hey, glad it worked! I changed the thread title to include [fixed]. Yes, screens can be a pain to swap. I swapped 2 LCDs so far (one on Thinkpad, one of Dell XPS) and both times it was very frustrating. So many plastic things that needed to be "popped" lol.
  16. Did you try calling Dell/AW? I would explain that they since they have service manuals up for their recent and current models, it doesn't seem like there should be any reason not to have the old one. Maybe they can mail you the hard copy if nothing else.
  17. Np! It should be very close to the monitor cable. This photo should help you out: It's from the page 50 from M17x-R2 service manual.
  18. VT-d is (I think) a set of CPU instructions that can be enabled to speed up the work with Virtual Machines, that support them. vPro is I believe a feature set that I have on my Thinkpad, that has to do with security like being able to connect to the computer if it gets stolen etc. (aimed at business users) No clue about the rest.
  19. I just (yesterday) extensively cleaned up mine so I am familiar with all the cables. OK so my guess to what happened. You actually forgot to plug in the cable. There are several: - wide connector that connects the screen to the motherboard - right next to wide there is a short connector that connects the webcam to the motherboard. both go from the left. - set of four for antennas (1 bluetooth, 3 for wifi) that goes through the right end I will also guess that the Unknown device is in fact, a Hard Drive free fall accelerator thing. If it is, then the hardware ID should be SMO8800, like on this screenshot: I did not install it so that's why I have it as Unknown device. If this is actually the webcam hardware ID should be like this:
  20. Hey welcome to T|I ! You connected the web camera cable to the motherboard, right? You need to have both "fascap" and "Integrated Camera", like this: So, do you have any "Base System Device" other than fascap? Btw, LOL! It's fine.
  21. Hey @svl7, Sorry for slight off topic. How do you mod BIOS? Do you use hex editor to change stuff and how do you figure out what hidden option is where?
  22. Well you can buy it all together at the same time but after you figure out what you want in it, and how much power these components will use. (CPU+GPU being I guess main power hogs.) So plan first, buy second. I don't think those two things (gaming & server) are compatible. But you can build a gaming machine and use it as a server. It depends for what exactly it would be used. For example, I have a small file server at home, but since its used only as my always-on machine for downloading stuff when I am away and for storing stuff, it is still my 4 year old desktop that uses a dual core AMD CPU 2 GHz. The only things I've purchased for that are its own PCI-E Gigabit LAN card (since it had 100mbit built in) and a good wireless router. I am also running an SSH file server on it and occasionally run some simulation that needs to be run overnight.
  23. I suppose it is possible, but I don't see much benefit from multi CPU systems unless you're running some CPU intensive simulations or something similar and making a server computer. There would also probably have to be a specific application support for it (I think MATLAB supports it). For gaming it would be rather pointless as GPU is far more important. So the main question is I guess what do you want to do with that computer? If you want to play games, even a single previous gen GPU can probably max out whatever you want at a standard resolution. At some point you get better benefit (in terms of how games look like) from buying a better monitor then a GPU. No clue about raid controllers. Whenever they can make games properly run on Linux, I am ditching the Windows.
