Hey guys, so I have my AW M17x R4 running the 980m but my fans are not running properly CPU and GPU. I tried using HWiFNO but it is only able to control the GPU fan. Plus it is annoying to keep having to manually turn on my fan. Right now I have a house fan under my laptop as a temporary fix. Any suggestions? I'm desperate. Also, when I try to boot diagnostics I get a black screen with 8 beeps.

Sorry can't help you with the fan issue.
Connect it to an external display and then go to diagnostics, that's how I got mine working.

Sorry about the late reply mate, did you find a solution?

Hi, do you still have 3dvision with the 980m on the internal laptopscreen available?

3Dvision will not work with the internal display. However It DID WORK with an external 3D screen.

  3. It's very disgusting what's happening to the computer industry. We have one company controlling GPUs, other controlling CPUs, and OEMs who's only wish is cutting costs and filling their pockets.
I won't hold my breath for AMD either, It's a lost cause brothers. Lost cause indeed. (4870x2 was my last AMD product, it performed great,  doubling the  E bill and almost setting the house on fire )
    I SAY LET IT ROT/RUST.
Desktop is the to go, until they start forcing BGA down our necks, and ditching standard/reference designs and extesnions.
@Mr. Fox @J95 @ssj92 @Prema & other mates. My condolences guys, it's an outrage owning an ultra expensive machine that lost it's potential in less than a few months.

Very nice! I love bright/canary yellow colors. It is so uncommon. Is that your car, bro?

    Nope :01:
Always admired the concept of US muscle cars, enormous amounts of unshackled power like Clevos, and perhaps pre AW17/18 Alienware.
I own a Mercedes E55 AMG, a muscle car from Europe, Wolf in sheep's clothing....

  5. As far as I know it's an issue with mobile Maxwell GPUs, Prema told me it has to do with MOSFETs reaching their limit.  More over, the 980M was supposed to have 6 MOSFETs instead of 3.
Max I could get was 1402Mhz where I was able to barley pass the Steam Oculus VR tool. Firestrike seemed more sensitive and black screened more frequently.

Cheers mate, I don't know what Nvidia did this time but for me it's the best driver for my setup. Better than 352.84.
OC'ing is more stable with this driver, temps are ~2°C cooler.
Also both CPU/GPU fans quit on me, waiting for replacement

@Solo wing thank you again ^^, Can you please explain to me why the 3d feature is not available when we upgrade the gpu, knowing that when I searched on the nvidia website the gtx 970m & 980m support 3d?

http://www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gtx-980m Mobile Maxwell GPUs (& 880M) do not support 3D. Perhaps OEMs or NVidia decided to discontinue 3D vision for notebooks.

Thank you for all the informations ^^, So to sum up  all the steps I have to do when I get my GPU:

    1) Since I will already be running on win10 with my current GPU (AMD7970m) I will start by uninstalling the AMD GPU driver and Intel integrated driver + reboot

    2) Disable  Driver Signature Enforcement  on win 10 + shutdown

    3) Unplug power cord

    4) Remove battery

    5) Hold power button for 30 seconds

    6) Remove CMOS coin battery

    7) Unplug the old gpu and plug the new one (GTX 980M) + unplug the old screen (60hz) and plug the 3D in the EDP port (
I will skip meeting some minor details like putting thermal past and heat sink on the gpu...etc.)

    8) Reinsert CMOS battery + Plug power cord

Did I skip the part when i should put boot list option to UEFI in the boot menu??

    10) Install the new gpu with moded inf files

    11) reboot and everything should work??

Please correct me if I forgot any important step, I am sure I made a lot of mistakes:/

Thank you guys again for all the informations :)

Perhaps a clean install would be better.

If you decide to start new:

1- Change Bios settings to UEFI / disable fast start/ disable legacy rom / disable secure boot.

2- Install Win 8 or 10 from a media of your choice.

3- Since you booted with pure UEFI, Windows setup will probably format your drives to GPT.

4- After the setup completes, shutdown the computer, unplug the adapter and battery. (no need to remove the CMOS)

    5- install the 980M

    6- install the new display

7- turn on the computer, disable DSE

    8- install modded drivers

    9- Enjoy!

Thanks for your reply, the main raison i wanted to stay with win 7 is because of this  https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/862417/geforce-drivers/windows-10-geforce-drivers-are-killing-samsung-and-lg-notebook-lcd-display-panels/1/  (thank you @Mr. Fox) since nobody reported the problem with alienware m17x R4 120ghz screen  I guess I will upgrade to the gtx 970m (not enough money for the 980m) I already bought the 3d screen all that's left to buy is the gpu, If i may ask which version of the gpu driver you're using  ??

I don't think you should worry about damaging your screen, It was  mostly caused by EVGA Precision. Driver 352.84 is  best for Windows 10 (throttle-free), same thing for 353 on Windows  8. If you can wait a bit more to grab the 980M you won't regret it , the performance is extremely good and overclocking headroom is huge.

Thanks for your reply, It's too bad  that the 3D feature does not work with 880M GTX or newer gtx cards, do you know if 120Hz screen can be used with 880M on Windows 7 without having to upgrade to Windows 8 or 10?

    Only Maxwell cards (9XX series) need Win 8 / 10 + UEFI.

Kepler cards will work fine with Windows 7 under Legacy (no need for UEFI). My advice is to stay away from the 880M it's a disaster.

My apologies for the late reply.
I only have 60hz and yeah I have been reverting back to them as they are the most stable, but when I run heavy games like Assassins creed Syndicate, the game goes fine for a little bit then screen goes black following a force reboot from a BSOD thats not coming up?

    Are you overclocking?

I used to have crashes every now and then, GPU-Z showed PCI-E x2 instead of 16 so I re-seated the card, cleaned the MXM socket on both MB and card. Everything is great now , running SVL7 vbios + 352.84 ( OR 353 for win8)
