  2. UPDATE: ALL DOWNLOADS LISTED IN THIS POST FOUND HERE. Nvidia 'Kepler' GPUs - modified VBIOS files >>> NOTE: More versions (including voltage mods) exclusive for T|I users can be found in the second post. <<< The 'Kepler' GPUs from Nvidia perform really well, even at increased clocks speeds they stay quite cool - a perfect behavior when it comes to overclocking and improving the performance. Unfortunately the mobile GPUs suffer from an artificial +135MHz core overclocking limit, so you can't go higher by using tools like Nvidia Inspector and similar. The modified VBIOS files listed here have this limit unlocked, some have increased stock clocks or tweaked voltages. Just refer to the description. All files have been modified by myself, if you like them feel free to buy me a drink, donation link can be found below GTX 660m: 660m_OC_edition__VBIOS_[DELL].zip- comes with unlocked software overclocking limits 660m_GHz-Edition_overvolted_VBIOS_[DELL].zip - default 3d clock 1000MHz, base boost 1200MHz,, memory (3d) 1350MHz, increased 3d voltage undervolted editions possible, depends on interest, tba Some screenshots: GTX 680m: Clevo_680m_-_80.04.33.00.10_'OCedition'_revised_01.zip Dell_680m_-_80.04.33.00.32_'OCedition'_revised_00.zip Increased software overclocking limits & optimized for no throttling. 4. . Read this link before continuing: http://forum.techinferno.com/alienware/2252-information-about-bios-updates-a07-a08-higher-m14xr2-m17xr4-m18xr2.html M17x R4 and M18x R2 users already have the possibility to further tweak their systems with the help of a modified bios... so let's not forget about the M14x R2 users Dell has hidden a lot of options in the BIOS of the Alienware M14x R2, the modified BIOS versions here will show you all the hidden menus and allow you to further tweak your system and optimize its performance. Don't change anything you're not familiar with. There might be functions available which don't work on your system, so use this BIOS with care. It should only be used by advanced users. In case you mess up and your system refuses to boot after applying the changes you make, remove the AC adapter, battery and coin cell battery in order to clear the non-volatile ram of the BIOS. This should fix most issues. Believe it or not, creating such mods is rather time-consuming. 7. I know we have a thread on M18x-R1 + 680M but figured I'd add create a separate thread for SLI since it has its own unique issues vs a single 680M. First off, thanks to @svl7 for letting me abuse his 680M in SLI config. It provided us with a lot of useful data and some of it is good news but the majority is not so good. Before I get into the 680M SLI discussion, I'll begin with some upgrade photos of the GPU in the M18x-R1: The Good: The Vantage score above is with the default settings, no overclocking except for the CPU. There are also some 3DMark 11 runs I did, you can find them as follows: 1. Default settings, no GPU OC: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2920XM Processor,Alienware M18xR1 score: P10235 3DMarks 2. Mild OC (no overvolt) on GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-2920XM Processor,Alienware M18xR1 score: P11560 3DMarks So as you can see based on the GPU performance scores, the 680M in SLI has a HUGE amount of potential. I want to emphasize potential because like I said earlier, there's some bad news. The Bad: The single 680M can use an ES MSI vbios (aka FD vbios) that does not seem to have temperature throttling built into it like the retail OEM vbios's in mobile and desktop cards. This allows the single 680M to reach phenomenal overclocking heights and break world records. The fun stops there though because in SLI, the FD vbios doesn't work--SLI isn't detected at all. Unfortunately, @svl7 tried modding a retail MSI + Clevo vbios without much luck, all the attempts resulted in severe throttling with the core alternating between 902 mhz and 225 mhz. This caused stuttering and an overall low score vs default SLI. So you might be asking, "what about the mild OC score above with 3dmark 11?" well that was done with the stock vbios with +135 on the core and 1100 mhz memory (or close to that). Any further would result in the same type of throttling I already talked about. The Ugly: I don't think the vbios problem will be solved anytime soon. So with that said, it seems 680M SLI, whether its Dell or Clevo, will suffer from throttling when overclocked passed +135 mhz on the core. That means for price:performance, it isn't exactly the best deal in town. If AMD can get their shit together, 7970M Xfire would be an all around better deal. That's a BIG IF though because so far, AMD has done nothing but disappoint. The bottom line: So the bottom line is that if you want the best single card performance in town for a reasonable price, grab a Clevo 680M, flash it with the MSI FD vbios and stick it in a refurb M17x-R3 from the Dell outlet. With proper overclocking, you will reach very close to 680M SLI stock performance for half the price (although you lose the M18x build quality and bigger display). If you want to go dual cards, then its a toss up between AMD and nVidia with the M18x-R1/R2. Pricing comes into play with AMD winning that category handily but when you consider driver support, nVidia thrashes AMD so there's no clear winner.

  10. Thank you, As you write, P150HM/EM natively did not have support for the Intel XTU. Only P170HM/EM have. Since two years I wrongly thought that in P150HM due to lack of support by the HM65 chipset. Thanks to Moral Hazard, it turns out that the chipset does not matter. As soon as I find some free time, I will write something about both mods (P157HM and P157EM). Regards

  11. So let me move that to here. Would become off topic in the BF3 server thread and would get blamed by Michael oops, sry @Brian, missed your post. The gpu is overheating straight after launching BF3 or even 3dmark. cpu is stable on 80°c. I'll wait for the liquid cooling now, that should kill the heat Won't play on that big sceen anyway because it's facing the living room/sofa and my laptop is placed in the dinette. So I would have to carry the tv from the living room to the dinette just for playing. Also I can't sit in front of the tv in the living room because the lowboard where it's standing on is too high. Maybe when the liquid cooling is working propperly I will give it a shot again. Well yeah, I could try using lower clocks but as mentioned above there's no rushing doing that. Clocks are stable and as long as they are on the laptop screening I won't change it again. I guess I changed them 50 times or more with several custom clocks till I got stable clocks. The strange thing is the stock clocks and voltage lead to throttling. 0.975v and 1.100v@900/1300 are the only ones which don't throttle. Long time I had a flash with these clocks even in 2d mode with amazing increasement in 3d mode. But the cpu was throttling down due to too less power supply. I will play a bit with that again when the liquid cooling is running. so plenty of time now

  12. Truth be told im sure one of the Alienware reps can confirm, the paste they are using as of right now is a high quality thermal paste that isnt cheap. It may not have the best thermals on the market but if the job was done good from factory temps are usually really good. The paste has a life which is a lot longer than a large amount of aftermarket pastes. Some of the best under high overclocks and stress can lose their edge after less than 6 months sometimes. My first 2920XM paste job was superb and allowed me to cool it quite well. Its been hard to reproduce that not impossible but hard to do.

  13. as long as you buy the card at eurocom on ebay, you will have all the parts you need. Backplate, screws, thermal pads, thermal paste. You just need to drill down the holes of your backplate a bit to get your heat sink a bit more tightened. 5min work for amazing performance. It's worth it

  14. Thanks for the reminder Michael. I not only don't want to make a bad first impression at T|I but I'm not looking to cast aspersions about the good folk at NBR. I was pretty upset at what happened to Nando and I went way overboard. I have apologized to the mods I may have offended at NBR in my overzealous first post. Hope to wipe the slate clean and, after a few breaths, actually introduce myself. Thanks again.

  16. Hey guys, I'm Dan, been on NBR since I had an old Inspiron 1720, and used NBR to ask a few questions. When the M17x R1 came out I was in awe of it's glorious physique and power . So I became real active in benching, and all that jazz. At the time I was in Iraq and had lots of free time, now days not as much as I'd like. Anyway as time goes on I start to find myself enjoying NBR less and less. The amount of talent that is getting banned is ridiculous and the posts being censored is crazy. I created the Ordering Advice thread at NBR, and it was soon being modded by mods, and edited, which I didn't mind so much, but I'd rather have kept it the way it was, although I understand putting in some things to have others abide by the rules. I just wish users could respect rules, and that there was no need for them, rather then just doing a bunch of whining. Wishful thinking. I've slowed on answering PMs, almost don't now if it is concerning the ordering advice thread. The PM's I do get are normally about scamming, or PM them my hookups ect. I quit responding to anything like that. If it has anything to do with ordering it's probably getting deleted. However, there are some things I do like, but freedom beats that stuff. So I made my way over to T|I because this is where all the cool guys from NBR came. NBR had so much talent once upon a time. I haven't been to active lately at NBR like I was, or T|I because of my son. He keeps me busy. Anyway next year I'm headed back overseas, and hoping my job allows access to T|I. Then I'll be more active and try and throw some useful posts on here. In the mean time, I'm headed over to the Hot Chicks thread to check out some @zz

  18. @Huuy Afterburner+HWiINFO for in game on screen display Download Afterburner:MSI Afterburner Download HWiNFO: HWiNFO64 Download -Install both and launch Afterburner first and HWiNFO second. -once installed the tray should show both apps and Afterburner's additional OSD icon. -Open the sensors window and hit configure -Check "Show RivaTuner OSD" and set it to line 1 on the CPU#0 Sensor Core#0 Clock -proceed to set the same for Core#1 Clock and again set it to line 1 -Check "Show RivaTuner OSD" and set it to line 2 on the CPU#0 Sensor Core#2 Clock and again on Core#3 Clock -for the cpu temp go to Intel CPU#0 "CPU Package" and select "Show RivaTuner OSD" and set it to line 3 -for cpu usage go to the "CPU#0" heading and to "total CPU usage" and select "Show RivaTuner OSD" and set it to line 3 -I like to see CPU power so here go to "Intel CPU#0" heading and go to "CPU Package Power" and select "Show RivaTuner OSD" and set it to line 4 and again if you want "IA core" or "GT Core" power check them and on line 4 -in HWiNFOs options it is important to have open sensors, minimize main window and minimize sensors enabled -open Afterburner the main app -click on settings on lower right -click the On-Screen Display Tab and create a hot key for hiding and showing the OSD optionally have one to disable it too -click on the monitoring tab and either leave the polling rate default or set your own (you can set to same as HWiNFO if you'd like) -check each of the pictured OSD sensors or select your own -hit ok -right click the jet icon with pink number in tray from the start and hit show -on the displayed screen click Global and make sure On Screen display is set to ON -now click on this + and browse to HWiNFO executable and hit okay -now on the HWiNFO selection make sure On Screen display is set to ON and "display own statistics" is on Afterburner OSD is even good for creating screenshots and monitoring your framerate plus even recording in game videos so no need for Fraps necessarily. Here is example pic of me playing Skyrim as you see 5ghz running over 3 cores and the 4th is idle at 800mhz on the CPU, Drawing 46.3 total watts @ 9.3% usage and 55C. 29.1FPS and the 580M vram overclocked to 1800mhz from 1500, while the core overclocked to 665mhz. Both cards in SLI at 98% usage and are 54C. For me Skyrim takes that 1.3gb of vram in basic areas go into a detail house and its at full 2gb of vram. Since you can take pics of the sensors this is also a great way to prove issues to dell and other companies of issues us gamers are having... enjoy any questions just let me know... if you need help the is plenty material I have written and can direct you to on starting HWiNFO with the task scheduler and fixing sleep function etc see here actually for those fixes: http://forum.techinferno.com/hwinfo32-64-discussion/65-alienware-fan-control-17.html#post21054
