6990m heat issues

Finally got it working. Figured it out as soon as i pulled the heatsink off. turns out the GPU dies on the cards are different. The 460m die runs parallel to the heatsink while the 6990m die is off center. The tape was preventing it from fully making contact with the die, so I removed it and temps are now down to 75C with my crappy AS5. Gotta get around to ordering some better stuff soon. Thanks for the help guys.

Might be the pads getting in the way and not allowing full contact. Definitely sounds like the sink isn't making full contact with the die. But if your fans aren't coming on, you may want to do a power drain of the system (turn it off, unplug, remove battery, hold power button for 20 secs) to reset the cmos.

yeah my 6990 and 460m hs looked the same to me, only different thermopad placement and the black tape on die is different.

Extreme this is a great all around vape. It does bags and whips. You can find these on amazon for under $200. But you do have to buy new bags and whips every now and then, some of the glass part are easy to break but you can buy better glass parts for pretty cheap. There is also a similar vape to style its called the vivape made by vaporfection, its more pricey but looks much sleeker like an apple product. Store | Vaporfection | Welcome to the New World of Vaporfection 2. Da Buddha/Silver Surfer- Da Buddha Home really great whip style vapes, can be found for around $200. Whips will need to be replaced ever once in awhile. Whips can be cleaned too, to last longer. Great to use with a water piece down the line if you get one. 3Arizer Solo- PlanetVape - Solo Vaporizer it’s a portable fog machine. It’s battery power portable vape, a charge will last you about a days worth of vaping or more. About 2 hrs of continuous use. It’s a little power house and is easy as hell to use, with some attachments you can use with bongs. Only thing to worry about is the battery, not really sure how long the would last. I highly recommend it just to have man, its so sick to vape anywhere anytime. 4.LSV-the life saber vaporizer is crazy cool too, you can use it by itself or with glass bong, which is my favorite. LSV this is what I use for groups of people, and my personally night time nock out vape J another similar style is the vrip heatwand, but could only be used with bong os is more fragile. And cheaper similar vape is magicwand vape too. 5. The cloud by vaporxhale. This will be my last vape for awhile. Perfect for people with no glass already, but be prepared to wait for it. 6. Also log style vapes are awesome too, but each is unique on how to use. But they look more like art. I recommend searching youtube for videos and stuff. You can ask me questions if you need further help. But I would go with the Solo first, its really easy to use plus its portable. Its really hard narrowing down which vapes to recommend since a lot of them are great. But I think this covers most popular brands. BSOD's whith OEM 2960

The Corsair Vengeance 1866 are beast and can be flashed to CL9 thanks to Thaiphoon Burner. No heatsinks though, just stickers. Also I'll take a few pics to answer Ops question about Flex/PriPlane later, already PMed him answer but this thread could do with pics.

i completely agree Geocake about all that you posted. yeah M18x has quite a decent xm heatsink. I dont know anyone with a m17x r3 local lol. geocake it is quite a challenge lol the ranges ive gone on m18x too if i go 4.5 there isnt as much trouble but what fun would there be in that. @OP follow geocakes recomendations those are good. Geocake id love to bench an M17x too lol i did on m17x r2 got 8k physics 3dmark11 on a 920XM honestly though m18x for long term overclock isnt easily used at those 4.6ghz ranges either. About my original post just wanted to indicate if your not talking about what model computer you have and just about the cpu... thats what the above was about that an actual 2920xm and 2960xm can get much higher ranges without bsod and they do it with add turbo overvoltage. Geocake you elaborated on what settings will work good on the m17x r3 and that chip and that should be very helpful to Thumper thanks geocake mine takes about the same voltage... if a chip isnt as effecient and or runs a bit hotter i can say 4.5ghz may start to take over 6flex and could instead be as high as 10flex... in the end testing it is your best bet and additionally try to ensure conditions are similar for comparison. Thanks GeoCake i think you and Widezu have done an awesome job working with and overclocking the M17x R3. edit: the lowest ive broken 30k vantage physics with these cpus is actually 4.3ghz and as you go up its just like you showed geocake as you go higher score is close to same or a little lower. Not possible necessarily on R3 but given proper cooling and enough volt about 32k physics should be aquired at 4.8+ghz 8thread. As mentioned given R3's cooling 4.6ghz may be the limits of the thermal cooling. You guys have fastest R3 setups around i mean Widezu has a nice 20k vantage on a single gpu thats crazy. Nice job guys.

Is it a Dell card? 105°C on idle indicates that the heatsink sits very bad, or the paste is applied badly. Did you already repaste or check whether the heatsink makes proper contact? Also the 6990m heatsink is slightly different to the 460m heatsink. Do you have the proper backplate?

well if budget is out the window. there is the the vapeXhale cloud at $450 and comes with a glass adapter, but the waiting list is friggin long as shit. prolly atleast 6 months out, hahahah VapeXhale i'll post up some other vapes too. but this is the top of the line shit right here. and i'm on the waiting list.

Yeah exactly... but honestly a little less about cpu than motherboard because of the differences ive seen from motherboard to motherboard... I think certain mobo have more clocks locked like icc and pcie... common limits are 104mhz range 105mhz and rare is 106mhz... With ILB having a golden mobo sample... And probably a decent cpu sample too... if you had xm i have feeling you still would be limited to 105mhz range deadbydawn... Even other alienware laptop owners see same thing ... Ive seen people have trouble at 102-103mhz so we are still lucky in that sense.

Sorry deadbydawn its luck of the draw. If your benching you can disable extra devices via the bios like bluetooth etc and see if you can boot a higher baseclock but most likely you will see no gains. Like i said its just a matter of the motherboard. My last motherboard was better than last 2 and current one... Only one i had that went to 106.2 baseclock this one starts giving me trouble at 104.2-3 if yours maxs around 105.3 and stuff its not so bad you have a nice range to overclock with... If its not working there just go down by a step or two till it works. sorry man ILB was only board ive seen at 107mhz i miss my last motherboard too but it had to be replaced it had a broken memory slot.

From what I have seen on the M17x R3, to run on 4.5Ghz or higher, one needs to increase the Flex (voltage). By run, I mean literally run at 4.5Ghz all cores, so that Throttlestop would report a constant 45 FID. The BSODs you are getting indicate that the CPU needs more voltage. From my experience @ 4.5Ghz I needed 6 Flex, 4.6Ghz I needed 12 Flex. The Vantage score on 4.6Ghz was the same as 4.5Ghz 'cause temps on 4th core was 100C, chip was just not coping. 4.5ghz seemed the max possible I could push it as the cooling in the M17x R3 is just not as good as the M18x - mw86 - you should borrow someones M17x R3 and give yourself a challenge, it's very different to the M18x. 1000 PriPlane, 6 Flex, 10019 BCLK... 4.5Ghz - http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z92/chaotic_george/VantageTemps.png 1000 PriPlane, 12 Flex, 10019 BCLK... 4.6Ghz - http://img190.imageshack.us/img190/4352/98361236.png @OP. I can guarantee you that with stock cooling you will not be able to run the 2 Vantage CPU tests at 4.6Ghz. You will get a thermal shutdown. Also OEM vs QS comparison, when set at the exact same settings I noticed the OEM chip getting a better score (but then again that was probably a better chip in general). It would be fun to do a more in depth comparison though.
