  2. Both monitors where calibrated with the same Spyder 3 Pro calibrator The Dell monitor with sRGB profile selected, at 100% brightness, 50% contrast Dell with Adobe RGB profile selected, 75% Brightness Dell monitor with Adobe RGB profile, 30% Brightness I will stick with the 30% brightness since its not straining my eyes and the colors are very similar between the two screens. UPDATE Final settings are here http://forum.techinferno.com/alienware-m17x/286-dell-u2410-vs-alienware-m17x-r2-rgb-led-1200p.html#post2340 -note- Unfortunately I have borrowed my camera to someone else and I had to take pictures with my cellphone which sucks big time... the colors are completely different than those on the pics... anyways it's better than nothing. First chance I will have, I will upload better quality pics.

  8. In all honesty, I am probably gonna get her sprayed in auto paint. Black is my usually color, but it's a little boring, and I always liked the color of the Dell Covet (my second fav lappy). So if anyone has a request and they dont have photoshop skillz, post here and I will give it a shot. -Ash

  13. Welcome to T|I justice! As wbabt007 mentioned, you can refuse delivery of the R3 and they will refund you the full payment. However, you can also call in and try telling them that you are moving abroad (e.g. use a Caribbean island since they don't ship there) and will not be available for delivery and thus need to cancel. If you have a good agent, they should accommodate that request. Another option is to tell them that you want the M18x and would like to cancel the M17x-R3 in favor of that and they should work with you on it. Good luck and let us know what happens.

  14. Welcome to TI e4Justice, nice to have you on board. When I spoke to my rep about this he said that if I canceled my M17x_r3 even after delivered or refuse they would wave the re stocking fee as long as a new order is place. Not sure if that is your question but I hope it helps.

  15. understood, definitely do ndeed respect that perspective for shure!~ simply working from more of a black and white based view (either it's something truly portable or would just go build a tethered desktop) when weighing all these pro/con factors for the system purchase decision - but that's just personal usage/need/preference here...

  16. Yeah I got my R2 on the outlet as well, they had a nice 20% off, it was either an R2 or an R3. And of course, I had to get the R2. New consoles shouldn't be out until 2013-204 anyway, and even by then they are always a couple of years behind PCs. I mean the new consoles could have a GPU equivalent to the 6970M.

  17. I shouldnt have to disable crossfire to use sketchup at a speed higher than a geforce 9200m. Thats ludicrous. -Ash

  18. Yeah the 480M was a fiasco...

  19. I would have alternated between nVidia and ATi around 2006 when it came to high end notebooks. However, nVidia's pricing really didn't allow me to do so as I would on the desktop side of things. Anyone remember how much the 9800M GTX costed? Also, the 6970M is probably faster at higher settings (1920x1200, high AA, etc.) than the 485M, which is type of settings the consumers for these type of cards play at. Luckily, the 485M came out before the 6970M. If it were the other way around, the 485M would have looked like a semi bust (but nowhere near the type of bust the 480M was).

  20. Another consideration about jumping from 5870 CF to a whole new system is the fact that most games "should" play (from what people tell me) until the next consoles arrive. When new consoles arrive, it won't matter if it's 5870 CF or 485 SLI as consoles arrive and compete with the best of desktop performance. Sure the videocards in the desktops may have more "raw" power but the visual difference is negligible. When I got my 360, COD2 and Tomb Raider looked damn near identical to my Alienware FX 55 CPU, and dual 6800 ULTRAs. Therefore how can video cards in a Laptop from 2011 compete with the best of what desktops offer in 2013. This was a major consideration for jumping on a $2000.00 R2 from the outlet with maxed specs (920xm, CF 5870, RGB). It should play the games I want to play at good settings for a few years which nets a good ROI for me. The reality is that PC gaming is becoming consolized. I attribute most of this to the majority of gamers going online VIA live and PSN. Now PC developers can target a bigger audience, spend less time optimizing codes to work on a variety of platforms and just rush average games and patch the updates....while milking the console players "points" for new outfits. It's kinda sad because I reflect back to 2003-2005 and vividly remember my jaw hitting the floor with Far Cry, HL2, Doom3, Oblivion and FEAR. There was just NOTHING CLOSE to what was offered on consoles. Now PC gamers are left with going to beyond3d to count pixels and brag about resolution and AA differences. However I do agree that the 6970 should have been what the 5870 was. It reminds me when I bought the m15x R1 the day it was released and it toppled SLI 8700 GTs. That system ran strong for 3 years and I jumped on the R2 as my 8800GTX died. At the end of the day, these philosophical ponderings are considered "good problems" to be facing IMO. Just to be in a position to afford a gaming laptop in a depressed economy makes me appreciate how far I have come in this world.

  24. That's probably because Sketchup does not support dual GPU Voted 6970: 1. Price-power 2. MUCH higher performance in Autodesk programs vs. equivalent non-Tesla/Quadro Nvidia GPU (except when rendering @ 3dsmax) 3. Optimus 4. Verde exclusion (in the case of m17x-r3)

  26. I am kinda burned my DAAMIT atm. On my r2 at home with my OCed 5870m's - in crossfire - sketchup runs... 'not the best'. At work, I have a mac mini running windows. It has a geforce 9200 in it. It runs sketchup orders of magnitudes faster. Literally. I get maybe 10fps in a certain one of my projects at home, and I hit way above 60fps on the mac mini at work - same SKP file, same version of sketchup, hardware acceleration enabled on both. Unity 3d and UDK both run faster on nvidia (the editors, specifically) and SLI is supported in more games. I just in general have a bad feeling about DAAMIT now. I know crossfire is much faster than SLI now, but still - I cant shake the feeling that the better performance in dev-ish apps mean I need the geforce. So, I am hoping against hope we can have 485m's in the R3 - although I'm guessing that Dellienware is going to pussy out and only supply 460m's. I believe this will be out of fear of a user getting the 2920xm + 485m combo and going to throttle city. I will happily be limited to a 2820qm if it means I can get my 485m sli! Heres hoping. -Ash

  27. E3 is a possibility though - note the fact they say "factory overclocked"... H67 is not the best platform for overclocking so it is quite possible this is a Z68 platform. That puts a release date around mid-late may, and its conceivable they would push it back one more month to get the perceived extra hype from E3. -Ash EDIT: On that note, if they do delay till E3, they will probably put in a 580m showing as well. We have a 555m so far... I'm willing to bet there is a 560/570/580m in the pipeline too. -Ash

  32. Question: any thoughts on (seller or manufacturer) refurbished routers? Good/bad idea to get those? One could snatch WNDR3700 for about $80 (vs $120 new) off eBay.

  35. Welcome to the T|I forum wbabt007! Initially the turn around time was about 1 week or less but I guess since word got out about the M17x-R3, demand has skyrocketed and now wait times are exceedingly long. Michael has been waiting over two weeks for his and it's still in production! I was fortunate enough to receive my R3 fairly quick (1 week).

  39. I am contemplating on snatching that one WNDR3700 (or its "Lite" version) of eBay as soon as I figure out what my tax return is going to be. I think my WRT54GL isn't really working well anymore. (I tried doing a hard reset and the same problems. Only Skype connects and the WiFi works a little then stops until I reconnect.) Besides, I only ever got up to 1-2MB/s on WiFi.

  40. the best router you can buy today would be the netgear wndr3700. its also a dual radio design and it has amazing wireless speeds. I am getting around 10-12MB/s on wireless consistently. it also is supported by ddwrt and by openwrt. I promise you though that once you install ddwrt you will not want to buy a new router.
