eGPU experiences [version 2.0]

Received the new PE4L soldered on both ends. GPU-Z reports 2.0 x16 @ x1 2.0, NVIDIA configurator also says the bus is Gen2. But 3Dmark sees it as x1. Something is wrong. I get same results as with PE4H on x1 speed.

Results with PE4H:

15767 3DMark 06

P9063 3DMark Vantage

Results with PE4L:

15392 3DMark 06

P9789 3DMark Vantage

P2463 3DMark 11

Comparing to other people with similar configuration (x230) I get at least twice less scores for 3DmVantage and 3Dm11. Any suggestions?

I bought an eGPU roughly 2 years ago that worked great with my Lenovo t410 till yesterday. The power supply blew up and I had to replace it. However afterwards, I've been getting a code 43 in the properties of the NVidia GeForce GTX 460. I've been using the latest drivers of the 460 so I never bothered downloading the setup 1.0x. Is there anything I should look for or should I just download the setup 1.0x and try using the save/load dump? The card is detected fine and it sounds like it's working during bootup, but when I reach the desktop, the fans start spinning rapidly.

I was going to suggest that it might be a bios setting, but as you state, GPU-Z sees 2.0 x16. 3DMark06 isn't a good example as it's not being limited by the available bandwidth, but 3DMark11 might be a better indicator.

You suggest other people are getting much higher scores for similar hardware, but I don't see any 550ti scores on the first page other than for 3DMark06 and your scores before and after beat those. Where are you seeing a better 3DMark11 result (GPU has vastly more influence than CPU on these scores?

Of course the worst outcome might be that a 550ti can't actually make use of more bandwidth than x1 1.0 (!)...

Shoot, that must be it :( I check on the web, no one scored more that 2500 in 3Dmark11 with 550Ti. Need to look for another card then...

Hello,

I ordered a random mpci-e to pci-e adapter from ebay.

It works and detects my Gtx560TI (OEM). (only if i hotplug it)

I also bought the 1x software from HIT.

But i want to install the optimus drivers (for internal screen use) but every-time i want to install the drivers it fails on installing the graphics driver part.

I tried the 285.62 with nando's NVAM.INF (Ps: you are awesome =D) but no success.

I also tried modding the nvamn.inf myself on the 314.07 drivers but then it doesn't detect my eGPU.

I'll post the screenshots tomorrow if needed.

Could Someone Please Help/Provide me with the Correct driver/nvam files?

Thanks!

Has anyone tried PS2 emulation with an eGPU? I've been trying it for the past couple of days, and it has been incredibly slow, despite the fact that my specs should be more than powerful enough. I've also noticed that neither my CPU, nor my GPU are working at 100% while trying the emulation, so something weird is going on.

I'm running an i5 2410m with a GTX 460 1.2opt

I have a Thinkpad X220 with an I5-2520M and 16GB of RAM.

I purchased a PE4L 2.1 from HIT about t 2 months ago along with a used GTX 460- running @ x1.2opt

I've been experiencing some problems (BSOD, constant driver crashes, extremely sluggish frame rates w/ internal screen, disappearing mouse cursor w/ external screens) and have (I think) narrowed it down to the GTX 460. I have tried out two other video cards, an 8800GTS 320mb and a 4850 1GB, and they appear to work fine, w/o any driver crashes or BSOD.

I am wondering if I would be able to run an AMD HD7850 2gb with my laptop. I am aware of the requirement of a 256mb memory space to run AMD cards- however, I noticed in one of the test configuration reports from NANDO ( http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/2747-12-5-dell-e6230-gtx660%40x1-2opt-hd7870%40x1-2-pe4l-ec060a-2-1b.html#post37197 ) that the Dell E6230 was able to run it without resorting to any ACPI modifications to move the egpu memory allocations to 36-bit space.

Would I be able to reliably run the HD7850 2gb with the X220 w/ 16GB RAM?

There is no longer any need to modify the Verde (mobile) driver's NVAM.inf file to get desktop NVidia card to run with Optimus features on a notebook. That's now provided by the standard desktop driver. Now if the GTX560Ti (OEM) isn't detected then you'll need to add it's pci-e ID into the INF files or try a 'have disk' manual driver install.

There was no need to do 36bit pci-e allocation on the E6230. It was using 32-bit pci-e space since TOLUD was 3.0GB. Lenovo Thinkpads also set TOLUD to 3.0GB if they detect a eGPU on bootup when using the latest bios versions. A confirmation of an AMD card working on a X220 is BPlus' demo. A 4GB X220 + HD7770:

Only issue I forsee is your 16GB. We've had numerous reports of Thinkpads seeing poor performance, stuttering and what not, with the solution being to downgrade to 8GB. Not sure what the problem causing it is. It must be solvable as we have other non-Lenovo eGPU 16GB implementations without such issues. So a fix might be say disabling as many PCIe devices as feasible in Device Manager or acquiring Setup 1.x and performing a PCI compaction helps.

Thanks For your reply Nando,

I tried to install the desktop driver 314.07 but if i go to device manager it says error 43.

Would you please like to give me instructions on what to enter in the 1.x setup?

Or please contact me on skype, (The City Montages, boxouwe1),

What i want is a internal setup and if i just connect a external monitor to my EGPU it will work and not if i launch a game BSOD.

Ill now try to install the desktop driver 295.73

Thanks!

Thi3rryzz

Ps: DVI to D-Sub(vga) isn't a prob right?

(EDIT: Driver 295.73 Desktop also doesnt work/ still error 43 :(

(EDIT2: I got it to work on my external monitor but when i launch a game/fullscreen application, My Tolud is 2.5 when 4 gigs ram installed, biggest slot with 36bit compaction is 512 and with 32bit only 256. Any idea?

Error 43 can be solved using Setup 1.x's Video cards->Initialize. With a TOLUD of 2.5GB you might just allow Windows to allocate the eGPU.

Now since you are seeing games launch but only on fullscreen then there is no longer an error43 or error12. Means now the issue is with Windows. Probably an anomoly with your iGPU+eGPU driver installatuon. I'd suggest uninstall the NVidia and Intel HD drivers completely, then do a reinstall of both ensuring you 'clean install' the NVidia one.

AppInit_DLLs needs to be set for internal LCD mode to work

For games to launch on the internal LCD on systems with an intel iGPU, the AppInit_DLLs needs to route via a DLL. NVidia sets this to nvinit.dll. Lucid Logix Virtu sets this to it's own appinit_dll.dll. During my tinkerings I have seen this registry setting missing so internal LCD mode didn't work.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows]
"AppInit_DLLs"="C:\\Windows\\SysWOW64\\nvinit.dll"

A new problem - has anyone encountered this before?

(For reference I'm using an X220 with a PE4l 2.1b and a GTX 560ti)

I haven't used my eGPU for about a week. I plugged it in about an hour ago to get some CUDA stuff going (using the sleep mode -> power on eGPU -> resume method) and the system wouldn't wake up. I then restarted with the eGPU attached and it wouldn't boot. Finally I booted up without the eGPU (no problems) and then switched it on while the computer was running and all four CPU cores went to maximum and the whole system felt like it was running at about 0.0001 frames per second. Managed (rather painfully) to get the device manager open and no sign of the eGPU.

The only change I have made is installing a DisplayLink driver to wirelessly stream a powerpoint presentation the other day. It broke Chrome so I uninstalled it, but I fear it may have damaged my eGPU set up. (Or worse still my PE4L might have died).

Any ideas?

EDIT: Just tested the card in a desktop and it appears to be dead. Very frustrating, and I don't want to take the card from my desktop and use it on my PE4L for fear of killing it as well! Looks like I will be without an eGPU for a while...

Hi Nando,

Thanks for your reaction,

I Deleted The drivers in device manager for my Intel HD Graphics and my Nvidia GTX560ti

After that, i rebooted and i re-installed the drivers,

I rebooted again but everytime when i reboot i get BSOD,

,

Would you also please tell me what i have to pick in the 1x setup?

Thanks,

Thi3rryzz

Ps: My normal startup routine:

1. Turn on pc

2. When Windows 8 Boot menu appears i pick DIY egpu 1x setup,

3. PC Boots to the setup

4. I enable Pci-e slot 2

5. I Pull out ribbon cable and turn on PSU.

6. I but back in the ribbon cable (hotplug)

7. Then i select initialize nvdia card.

8. i Select 36 Bit compaction on my EGPU

9. Then it ask on which one to apply 32 bit Compression, i press none.

10. Chainload to windows.

11. BSOD :(

EDIT: Still error 43 occuring, tried initialize, it doesn't work still error 43.

Also tried the method on the FAQ but then it doesn't detect my dump.

I Turn of my pc after The dump to Windows.

When i boot into windows i don't get a message or something like "follow instructions generated from within Windows".

Edit 2: I think it has to do something with my powersupply, its only 300 watts and doesnt have a pci-e power connector, thats why it worked on idle and doesnt when i put load on it, i think i have to pick-up a better one.

Could that be it?

Thanks!

Hi @all,

I just wanted to say hello and specify some values. I'm from the german forum for eGPU on "computerbase", and there I found the topic and have implemented it. I have a Lenovo X220 (BIOS 1.31) with a i7-2640M, IPS-display, 8GB RAM, PE4L V2.1b-EC060A and a Palit GTX 660 with Nvidia driver 314.21 Beta. @ Thi3rryzz Many powersupplys work with a Multi-Rail, which allows one to split the power to the CPU and GPU to operate separately. Some in the German forum had some problems with the power supply, but they could start the eGPU (no errors), but switch off under load.

Know someone when using a AMD graphics cards, if you need modified drivers?

There are three performance issues with your system making it unsuitable for a high performance eGPU implementation. Those being:

1. You have no active iGPU so can't use a NVidia card capable of pci-e compressed x1.Opt. 2. Your system has a Series-5 chipset only capable of pci-e 1.x. Series-6/7 are capable of pci-e 2.0 with doubling of bandwidth. 3. We found that AMD cards negotiate what appears to be half-duplex on Series-5 or older chipsets. This has been corrected in Series-7 systems and likely Series-6 ones as well.

I'd advise offloading your system for a better eGPU candidate with a more convenient expresscard slot and an active iGPU. One-gen older Sandy Bridge systems a good bargain to snare on ebay. eg: 15" HP Probook 4530s, Lenovo E520 or Dell Vostro 3550. The Probook has had successful aftermarket 1080P LCDs installed into it. The premium business units like a 15" HP 8560P, Lenovo T520 or Dell Latitude E6520 offering high-res panel options.

timohour has a eGPU-equipped HP 4530s and has done the 1080P LCD upgrade. See HP Probook 4530s screen upgrade 900P, 1080P

Check the DIY eGPU Troubleshooting FAQYou probably need the initialize function to solve error 43.

Ivxy I like what you've done with your enclosure, particularly how you've made use of the USB port for an extra HDD! What kind of power supply are you using? I ask as I'm pretty sure my ATX unit that I pulled out of a cupboard is responsible for frying my 560ti so I want to replace it with something else before buying a new card.

My DC / DC converter is a PW-200-M(can buy on ebay), and a power supply (AC / DC) with 192 watts. But I would not buy a PW-200-M, since these have a (high-pitched) buzzing sound. In my case it's not bad because it is built tight. I have updated my table updated with the values, I have tested a x1.1 Opt connection.

Then you just buy a new power supply, as it would with an Xbox power supply with 203 watts? There's even some instructions for connecting.

Anybody heard from HIT or other vendors whether or not the elusive PE4H PCI-2.0 compliant kit is on the way, or still in the discovery process? It sounds like the PE4H v3.2 kit is probably "it", though nobody has really confirmed definitively that this is the case.

I'm just wondering if I should keep holding out for the upcoming PE4H PCI 2.0 compliant kit, or if I should just go for the PE4L v2.1. The guys at HIT have already been so accommodating to allow me to get a full refund of my PE4H kit well outside of the standard 30-day period. I just don't want to be a butt head about this and do a refund 6 months outside of their normal 30-day refund/exchange period (it just doesn't feel right to me).

Yes, that's my current plan.

@daver160 - Is there a PE4H 2.4 with a hardwired cable? Any board with a detachable cable isn't going to work for for PCI-2.0. If you don't like the format of the PE4H 3.2 then I would have thought that the PE4L 2.1b would be ideal.

Not that I know of, all the known PE4H 2.4 kits have detachable cables.

It's not that I dislike the format of the PE4H v3.2, it's just that HIT doesn't carry it right now. So given my situation, I have 2 choices: wait for the PE4H PCI-2.0 compliant kit to arrive at HIT, or just go with the PE4L which we all know is PCI-2.0 compliant.

The more I think about it, the more I'll probably just go with the PE4L. I'll see no major performance gain by waiting for a newer PE4H kit, and frankly I don't think my 650 Ti will be able to max out any new PCI 3.0 that may come out soon.

Hi,

I found out my problem,

After all it was my power supply,

Now i have 1 powering the pci card and the other one the extra pci-e connector,

Im very happy with this setup,

I also got my internal display working (thanks nando)

But do you think that 500watts will be enough for a 560ti?

Thanks!
