Is m18x r1 compatible with the 3xxx series intel cpus? (i.e. 3740qm)

Recommended Posts

The R1 is only compatible with the Sandy Bridge CPUs. So you are limited to the 2XXX series chips. I suggest going with a 2920XM or a 2960XM. They are still pretty powerful chips and can be picked up for decent prices now.

SkylineLVR is correct, the R1 (and all laptops built with the HM6x chipset) are only compatible with Sandy Bridge CPUs. On the desktop, however, many H/Z/P6x boards were able to be updated to support Ivy Bridge CPUs (this maybe the source of confusion).

In theory, the R2 can support both Ivy and Sandy Bridge, although I have not tested it, I do know other models on the same generation were offered with sandy bridge dual core at launch because intially Ivy Bridge was only available in quad core (if you are wondering!)

I'm still on the fence on if laptop makers never supported IVB on 6 series laptops due to a real hardware compatibility issue or just to make people buy new laptops. Long story short though, it won't work.
