  1. Hello fellow tech enthusiasts, I could really use some assistance and insights on a problem I'm facing with my MSI GT72 6QD gaming laptop. Recently, my GTX 970M graphics card became faulty, prompting me to purchase a replacement GTX 980M. However, after installation, I've encountered a perplexing issue. The problem is as follows: 1. The laptop screen remains blank; there is no display whatsoever. 2. The laptop does seem to be functioning correctly as the external display (LED) works without any issues. After encountering these problems I decided to install vbios without having any experience and ended up flashing wrong bios, however I got the display but gpuz show GTX 980 without Physx and few other. Sequentially, I tried so many bios but none of them worked, came up with mismatch GPU, mismatch device ID, wrong firmware etc. Have any of you experienced a similar situation when upgrading a GPU on an MSI GT72 6QD laptop? Your valuable expertise would be greatly appreciated, and any guidance you can provide will be a huge help to me. Thank you in advance for your time and assistance..
  2. Hi I bought a gtx 980m for my clevo p170 sm-a it originally came with an 880m unfortunately it died , I wonder if the 980m will Work without problems and if i need modded drivers or anything thanks
  3. Hello to all can you help me change the graphics card? Alienware m17x r4 i7 3610qm quadro k4100m display 120hz 3d bios a15 trying to install 980m but not getting 5 or 8 beeps removed the battery and reset the bios. disabled legacy and secure boot in settings windows 10 gpt uefi help how to be?
  4. I'm attempting to install a gtx 980m into an m17x r4. I have an unlocked a15 bios booting in pure UEFI. I haven't really messed with any other settings in the bios. I used DDU to uninstall previous Nvidia drivers and all system drivers are up to date. My issue is the 980m is not being detected at all in the bios or device manager. I believe in the bios, "Discrete Graphics" says "Not Detected". Is there any possible explanation for this other than a dead card? The old gpu still works fine on this device when I switched back,
  5. I have a p150sm which has a seemingly dead 780m due to a perpetual error 43 which came after a big BSOD about 6 months ago. I upgraded the laptop to a 980m and modded the inf files. The upgrade was perfectly fine for a week. One day, i left the laptop and something related to sleep or power may have caused the laptop to shut off. Since then, the laptop with the 980m won't boot. I tried many things like resetting cmos, taking out the hardware and putting it back in, and resetting bios, and buying a 230W adapter. Nothing worked. The laptop works fine with the old dead 780m in there, but now when the 980m is in there, holding the power button generates a green light flash and then the power LED goes back to orange. No sounds, maybe one tick, and that's it. What is left to try?
  6. So I just received a 980m in the post and after installing it I was greeted by multiple system crashes on my Alienware m17xr4 and was unable to install new drivers. Is there a step in the intallation process I missed? A bios setting I was supposed to change? The laptop is already set to UEFI mode in preperation for this and upon putting the old 680m back in the system it now works again. I have heard that I need to change INI files to install drivers but I expected it to at least function without large bugs such as these. Do you think that this GPU is faulty or have I done something wrong? Thanks for any help you can give. - M
  7. Hi guys, I apologise in advance if this was asked before, Basically I have acquired an AW m17x r4 with a faulty graphics card. The card was the 675m. I just happen to have a GTX 980m out of a faulty MSI GT60. I did a fresh install of Windows 10 on the machine in UEFI mode with secure boot enabled however the card just shows up as Microsoft Basic Display Adopter and Nvidia Driver installer says there is no compatible hardware. Is there a way to make this card work? Something like a modified driver or perhaps a vBIOS flash? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys! Update: Trying to flash a clevo vbios, but get board ID mismatch in nvflash Board id E90C vBIOS id E906 Could someone direct towards a compatible BIOS for this card? Thanks!

  9. I have installed a 980m card in an M17x from early 2014 and am now here to ask the experts of this fine establishment if they can help with what needs to be done to get it to work, if at all possible. It tries to upgrade a shorted out 780m. Modded driver was installed (445.75 WHQL from 2020.3.23), but device manager says error 43. sBIOS is stock A17 from Dell. UEFI enabled, legacy and safe boot disabled. OS is Windows 10 Home 64-bit on an SSD. Can it be done at all? If it can, what needs be done? Edit: I think my model is actually 17 R1, judging by the date, processor being a 4th gen i7 (4700MQ) and also this matches my regulatory model. I know this is my only post here and in I come, asking for help, but... pretty please help? Further edit: I have identified the 980m as being a Dell version. (as per GPU-Z)

  11. Hi all, I just installed a used 980m into my Alienware 17 R1, and I'm noticing benchmarks that are ~12% below what others are reporting online. I'm wondering if this is just meh hardware, if it's a vBIOS problem, or if it's a problem with my computer and not the card. I noticed that the GPU is getting throttled under load... like, under any load. Here's the clock and temp during 3DMark Firestrike: Here it is with the voltage as well: The "perfcap" reason in GPU-Z is power. Specs: Alienware 17 R1 i7 4900MQ 4x4gb 1600Mhz Win10 My card: A pre-emptive thanks for any help.
  12. I'm looking at finally upgrading my m17x from its old 7970m to a 980m, but the person I contacted to buy the card from warned me that the 980m requires a 200W power supply, and win10 (I'm still on 7, but I can upgrade easily enough, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem). I have read that the 7970m only required 100W, so I have no idea if my laptop would even be able to power the 980m or whether this would just be a waste of several hundred pounds. Can anyone clarify? Also, I have read on here that installing a new card in an m17x require you to manually update the video drivers, but I'm afraid that I'm not quite sure what that means, exactly - would I need to rely on kindly users on here to keep uploading new modded versions of the video drivers in perpetuity, or is it just that I need to somehow tweak the installation on new drivers in future?
  13. hi everyone, do I get it right, this mod "A11 Unlocked Bios M18xR2 (by swick1981 & svl7) 2.0.0" allows me to run my alienware M18x R2 with two GTX 980M SLI in Legacy mode again, so I don´t need a modded Nvidia driver anymore? Please share your experiences with me, I would be greatful. best regards and thank you
  14. Hi guys, I succesfully flashed v2 vbios from prema and I tried 1v and and oc but I couldnt. I think it was power suply. Mine is 230w. And I tried 0.75 0.50 0.25 and 0 volt. 15. Hi there, on 21st of October I had to realise that Battlefield1 is not running with my current driver 361.75 . . . after I bought it. Installing the required 372.90 version is not so easy after you upgraded your Alienware M18xR2 with two GTX980M in SLI mode and Dell this old is not supporting you with Win10 anymore, anyone having some Nvidia driver for my needs?? Best regards and thank you
  16. Hi everyone, today I had my first Oculus Rift experience and it was great, I´m using an Alienware M18x R2 with two GTX980M in SLI / i7-3940XM CPU and would like to know if someone is using VR with a similar configuration like mine. I know there´s a possibility to test it on Steam and I´m nearly on the green area there, so I think I´m ready but if someone is having real experiences and would like to share them I would be greatful. best regards and thank you : )
  17. Hi, dont know if this is in the right forum but i want to get the 980m in sli for my m18x r2 and im wondering shall i wait for it to fall in price because the new mobile pascal just released? i still see 980m laptops being sold for same price and pre-purchase 1060m thats insane. any new would be good though.
  18. [Preface: I searched for about 30 minutes on Tech|Inferno before posting this, no one likes repeatied posts: ] I have a Clevo P370SM3 (now a P370SM) running dual 980m's that were part of an upgrade kit from Eurocom. I am considering using PremaMod's VBIOS mods on this page to take advantage of Prema's GPU improvements for the 980m. On that link on Page 4 are (3) different variants of the 980m GPU. How do I tell which one is the correct one for my 980m GPU's? Nvidia Inspector? If I had to speculate I would assume the GTX980M_8GB_MXM_OC_PM? MAXWELL GTX980M_8GB_MXM_OC_PM GTX980M-G_8GB_MXM_ZM_OC_PM GTX980M-G_8GB_MXM_DM_OC_PM Constructive thoughts or suggestions appreciated. Kind Regards, Koinonos P.S. I went from 12,000 on 3DMark 2011 on 780m SLI to 16,400 on 980m SLI. A nice step up and I think 18,000 is reachable with minor adjustments.
  19. These days a lot of the rage is in thin and light notebooks and while that is fine for a lot of people, there is a substantial number of performance enthusiasts (especially found on this website) that want the exact opposite. This group of enthusiast demands the pinnacle of performance built right into the notebook and not a thin and light compromise saddled with an Intel BGA processor and soldered GPU. Well Clevo and Eurocom are listening and Eurocom let us know that they have launched the new Sky DLX7 notebook that is aimed squarely at those aforementioned enthusiasts. But you don't have to be a gamer to want this DTR (desktop replacement) because it will offer the same amount of productivity as any formidable desktop, especially with it's 17.3" display with 4k resolution and 64 GB of DDR4 RAM. It can also support up to 4 active displays thanks to its two mini Display Ports, USB 3.1 and HDMI 2. The Sky DLX7 uses Intel's latest Z170 chipset with socket LGA 1151 which allows it to support the latest 14nm Skylake desktop processors up to the Core i7-6700K that operates at 4 GHz and has a turbo boost of 4.2 GHz. In addition, the CPU can be further overclocked for true high end desktop level performance. For those that like to keep upgrading their notebooks, the Sky DLX7 supports MXM 3.0b graphics cards such as the NVIDIA GTX 980 desktop (full desktop level card in an MXM package) and professional Quadro mobile cards. Unlike many competing notebooks, this DTR won't have trouble keeping itself cool as it features high capacity copper heatsinks and fans to keep things chilled. There doesn't appear to be a shortage of space either as it can support two 9.5 mm HDD or SSD bays and two M.2 SSD PCIe x 4 SATA drives with RAID 0/1/5/10 availability. There's no word on final pricing but given all the power this thing packs, it probably can get pricey very quickly. EUROCOM Sky DLX7 Specifications: Special Feature(s): Intel Z170 Chipset; Skylake-S; supports both mobile and a desktop based GTX 980 GPU Main Chipset: Intel Z170 (Skylake) Processor: Socket LGA 1151 Skylake-S; up to i7-6700K, unlocked Video / GPU: - MXM 3.0 slot; up to 180W GPU - NVDIA GeForce GTX 980 (desktop) N16E-GXX MXM 3.0 (83x 115mm)or GTX 980M, 970M, 965M; MXM 3.0b (83x105mm) Built-in PC Camera: Built-in 2M FHD Display: 17.3" UHD IPD eDP 3840x2160 Supports 4 active displays Memory: Four 260-pin, 1.2V, SODIMM sockets DDR4-2133/2400; up to 64GB Total Storage: up to 4 physical drives: - 2x M.2 2280 SSD PCIe Gen3 2x/4x or SATA - 2x 2.5" 9.5mm/7mm HDD/SSD/SHDD - RAID 0/1/5/10 Optical Drive: External USB based DVD-RW or Blu Ray Burner Card Reader: 6-in-1 Push-Push Card Reader MMC/RSMMC SD/mini SD/SDHC/SDXC UHS-II (SD 4.0) Audio Architecture: High Definition Audio S/PDIF Digital Output Built in array microphone Built in two 2W speakers and subwoofer Sound Blaster X-FI MB5 External 7.1CH output (headphone, mic, line-in and S/PDIF) ANSP 3D Sound Technology (headphone output) LAN/WLAN/Bluetooth: - WLAN / Bluetooth; M.2 2230 slot - 1Gigabit Ethernet RJ-45 LAN on-board; Killer E2400 Data and Physical: Kensington Lock Fingerprint TPM 2.0 on-board (Infineon SLB9665-TCG) Internal cards / # of slots/Type: Three M.2 slots -1st: WLAN M.2 2230 Card with PCIe x2 and USB (A Key) -2nd for SSD M.2 2280 Card with SATA / PCIe x2/x4 (M key) -3rd for SSD M.2 2280 Card with SATA / PCie x2/x4 (M key) I/O Ports: 1 x USB 3.1 type C / Thunderbolt 3 / DP 1.2 / HDMI 2.0 3 x USB 3.0 1 x eSATA / USB 3.0 (1x Powered USB AC/DC) 2 x miniDisplay Port 1.2 1 x HDMI 2.0 output 1 x Headphone 1 x Microphone-in 1 x S/PDIF (digital) 1 x Line in 1 x RJ-45 LAN 1 x DC-in Internal Keyboard: Backlit full size keyboard with numeric pad TouchPad with multi-gesture and scrolling W/A/S/D Gaming key AC Adapter: 330W 100-240V 50-60Hz Auto-switching (worldwide) optional 660W (2x 330W) for Extreme Performance Battery: 8cells Smart Li-Ion; 89W FexiCharger (via BIOS) Weight: 3.9kg / 8.58lb with battery Dimensions WxDxH: 418x295x39.9mm / 16.72x11.81x1.6-inch View full article
  20. Not sure where to post this so I just added it to general. I just upgraded my M17X R4 120Hz from 675m to a 980m and I'm having a problem I hope someone here can help me with. To start: It was installed correctly and successfully on Windows 10 (I wanted to start somewhere more certain). Everything worked fine and everything read fine (as far as the graphics card goes). After I was sure everything was working properly, I reverted to Windows 7. As I read, with the current unlocked BIOS A11 (posted on this site) it's capable of running 9xxM series in windows 7. When I installed 7 on this laptop soon after buying it (reformatted old HDD, moved to bay 1, inserted 500GB SSD in bay 0 and installed 7 OS on it) I installed selecting the UEFI option and the drive is in GPT. As mentioned, I have Unlocked A11 BIOS (thank you to the maker on this site!). Anyway, once I reverted to 7 it started to boot up and said it needed to run startup repair. I allowed it and it froze once the bar filled at the bottom. Upon restarting I tried once more.. same thing. I tried to "start normally" and it starts boot looping. I then changed "Load Legacy Option Rom" from disable to enable. This causes the 8 beep post issue immediately upon power on. This problem doesn't exist when this option is disabled. I then utilized the HDMI trick (I made a separate post for this the other day. Connect HDMI out to any screen and it will cause post on the laptop screen [but not on the external device]. Can then immediately disconnect once post has occured and works fine with no error or beeps). This let it boot up and I'm able to get to the desktop and everything works fine. Can even run screen at 120Hz. I ran diagnostics on the card, checked drivers.. everything is reading correctly. This is workable, but far from an ideal solution as I need to have a cable and some kind of HDMI screen available just to boot up every time. I have two option here and I'm hoping someone can provide a little guidance one way or the other. I can either fix the boot looping issue on "Legacy Rom - disabled" (it hangs on classpnp.sys when I try safe mode if that information helps at all). OR, I need to find a way for it to post when "Legacy Rom - enable" without connecting to an HDMI device (just plugging in the cable doesn't work. It has to be connected to something on the other end). For the first, I have tried start up repair and tried repairing using my WIN 7 disc but it doesn't actually pull up the menu. It just shows the windows loading screen and then freezes after a while. For the second I have tried changing different video options in hopes it will post on boot without connecting to an external or tried to find a way to keep the HDMI port active without something being in it. I can make no progress with either of these as I'm unaware exactly what exaclty the selections change. I currently have it set to PEG. Also, I have tried bios reset through removing all power sources and the 2032 CMOS and holding power button 30 seconds. Didn't help. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to ask any questions you have that could assist in ascertaining the source of the problem in either instance. As a last resort, I could go back to 10, but I would really rather not. The R4 (in Dell's words) isn't being tested for compatibility. Many features don't seem to work, and overall I just much prefer 7.
  21. I haven't posted here yet, but i currently have a p170sm with a 4700mq, prema bios, gx980m and 4 ssd's. Currently still using my stock 240w adapter and was curious to know if there are any benefits to getting a 330w adapter? So far, i haven't really had to many issues. I have a few cooling mods done so everything has been keeping decent temps wise. Thanks for the advice/input in advance!
  22. Can the new Alienware 13" be fitted with a GTX 980M and 4980HQ?
  23. Hello guys will the Gtx 980m work in the Alienware M15x?
