  2. Not sure if this the good thread but w/e: "New York, Manhatten, Night" - (©)AIRPANO.RU - Project by Oleg Gaponyuk THOSE SHORTS ROCK!
  3. P.S. Brian I hope you don't mind me bothering you but I never did this BBB thing, so I sent you a GTalk friend request. Added Michael earlier and he was very helpful too. BTW if you guys use FB I can friend you there.... seems like "everyone" is on it these days, lol.
  4. Will do. Thanks everyone for the advice! BTW there are three round rock addresses, I guess any one of them is fine? 1 Dell Way Round Rock, TX 786827000 1 Dell Way Ms 8210 Round Rock, TX 78682-0001 1 Dell Way Stop 8210 Round Rock, TX 78682
  5. I have the standard basic on-site warranty, but it was extended from 1 to 2 years. I did not agree to send it in, even though after talking to the guy in "level 2" (lol...) that's what they decided, but instead to escalate the case. If it indeed gets rejected, how do I get about the BBB? I see that there is a form to fill online.
  6. Yeah basically the mobo seems dead atm and I talked to the guy on the phone and he escalated the case (he did say that he thinks it will be rejected tho) and that I will have reply by next Wed/Thu. Other than that, he offered to send the laptop to Dell for repair.
  7. LOL!!!!!!!!!!! The ending!! The ending!!!!!!
  8. Yeah that's the thing, technically I guess this is the third repair -- first being hinge, second bottom panel. Also, when I extended a laptop warranty, did I also extend a battery warranty? (I think that is separate.) But... let's say the bottom panel issue still persists (after 3 "repairs")? Would that be enough to escalate it for replacement?
  9. Basically that's what the phone rep suggested -- that if I the laptop repair is still unsatisfactory, I should call back on Friday. I guess I'll do that.
  10. Yeah basically OK, we'll see whether and how the laptop works after I get the replacement parts. The problem is that the current laptop (M11x-R1) is pretty much worthless and has spent being broken most of the time when I had it. With mobo and AC adapter replaced pretty much the only thing that won't be replaced will be the keyboard and the top chassis part. It is pissing me off because that was the second time I bought $1K laptop from Dell that ended up having tons of problems. Also I assume if they sent the R1 mobo cannot possibly be new, but only *significantly* old as of this moment. We'll see what happens. I know I have to be home help out the tech, because I just couldn't watch him last time he was here and I said "OK, let me give you a hand, I have some experience with this...". The funny part is that the bottom panel screw breaking wasn't really tech's fault, I watched him all the time and he handled the laptop fine. Its really just crappy parts tbh. :-/
  11. Hi all, I am wondering what does it takes to get a replacement laptop? They are still trying to repair my M11x, which had: 1st visit tech: Repaired broken hinge, then during the repair the tech broke bottom panel 2nd visit tech: Tech tried to repaired bottom panel, didn't work. 3rd time: I sent laptop to Dell depot, they "repaired" bottom panel. (the same problem occured again afterward) 4th time (now): motherboard seem to die, they said they'll only send the tech with new mobo + AC adapter. So the guy on the phone said I *might* be able to ask for replacement only if the new mobo doesn't work or I am unhappy. Note that the battery might be bad as well. Any other ideas who I can conctact besides phone support? Thx
  12. Depends which ones you're comparing to. They are OK for consumer type laptops but the funny part is that even Dell XPS consumer line has better screen options. ಠ_ಠ The business class laptops have options for IPS RGB LED (Dell Precision), 95% gamut LED (Thinkpad W5xx) IPS (Thinkpad X2xx) or IPS Dreamcolor (HP Elitebook). The screen on M11x for example is OK, even though again significantly worse than Macbook screens -- I compared them side-by-side with my ex-gf's laptop. Both the resolution and the display quality are still lacking. If the GPU slot stays the same (MXM 3.0?) you might be able to upgrade the GPU. Also really wondering about the new chassis design.
  13. Yeah, it looks like all the other companies except for Apple pussy out of making these big decisions. If they put a retina display on an MBPs that would be awesome; I would be really tempted to grab one. I just wish they offered a real dock station for it. In the business arena Dell is offering (or at least did last time I checked) Precision laptops with 1920x1080 IPS RGB LED on an 15" screen which could have been useful had they continued with M15x line. I imagine even at that high resolution high end gaming systems with crossfire 7870M cards might work fine (and probably even current cards like 580m).
  14. EDIT: Added photos found by widezu69. From Eric G blog: GPU Options: - AMD Radeon HD 7970M - GeForce GTX 660M - GeForce GTX 675M AC Adapter/Charger: - 240W AC Adapter LCD Options: - 17.3" FullHD 1920x1080 2D - 17.3" FullHD 1920x1080 3D, WLED backlight - 17.3" FHD+ 1600x900 2D Color Finish: - Black - Red This laptop now uses eDP instead of LVDS for the LCD communication. eDP reduces the wiring footprint, and offers higher speed. Dell News and more - All about Dell - News, Tips, Tricks, Secrets, and more... LOL @ 1600x900 option 17" screen. Glad we can have "higher speeds" on garbage screens, tho. Thanks to widezu69 for finding the photos of the new R4 in of the chinese forums: DELL I'll try to keep this first post updated with all the info that we can find about R4.
  15. Meh not surprised. I am thinking the next computer I buy to replace M17x, will definitely be the desktop (even thought that might not happen in a while ). I don't like the garbage components and want a gaming GPU. Obviously you can't get a decent laptop with both. The good screens are tied to business class laptops that suck for gaming. Plus, I can't stand 16:9 displays. Luckily in the desktop world there are still plenty of good quality IPS 16:10 displays.
  16. I do the same with M17x. Every time I bring it to university, everyone keeps staring at it. ("Look at the size of that thing!")
  17. Grats Jimbo! If you'll have time, I'm sure people would like to hear your thoughts on the laptop. The build quality of previous models (X200/X201) was really good. BTW, you do know it takes 1 screw to take out the hard drive right? I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with how easy it is to swap RAM as well (it should take literally 1-2 min).
  18. I know what you mean. If new Fallout game would come out, I am not sure whether I'd still do the same, even if was made by EA.
  19. I guess I am the only person in the world who thinks Mass Effect is pretty boring. I don't know.... the intro in ME3 honestly seemed really cheesy and actually looked a verbatim copy of the Battlestar Galactica intro. On top of that they are charging extra for DLC that will come up with the game release and that is supposedly going to contain an important part of the story. That + the shit that happened before BF3 was released where they planned to give away different weapons only if you purchased the game from specific retailers.... honestly EA makes me sick. I simply refuse to support it. (And yeah I know you can always pirate it, but then who's worse -- you who pirated it, or them by basically trying to rob you off...) Not to mention their customer "support" which makes Dell Support look like the best support in the world. If you visit Reddit, you can find entertaining screenshots of EA support pretty much all the time. It's not like EA can't afford to make it better. Meh... :-/
  20. I prefer AMD/ATI, even though my impressions are based on somewhat outdated experience: 1. Drivers. Absolutely horrible driver support on M11x, even on R2 the bugged "semi-automatic switching" with whitelist between IGP and dedicated GPU is one of the most retarded things I've ever seen. AMD drivers aren't something to brag with either, and crossfire support could be better, but I overall had far better experience with their drivers. Same on my Dell XPS M1330 with GeForce 8600GS. 2. Features: for me they are exactly the same. I just need a decent driver interface where you can see basic information, maybe extend the desktop to another screen and tinker with color settings. 3D *yawn* ... it seems like they reinvent this crap every 10 years or so. CUDA is definitely generally useful for scientific programming as well, but I don't use it so I personally have no use of it. 3. Game developer support. 4. HW reliability. Simple. AMD cards don't have to be baked in the oven and don't run at 70 C standby. I also received absolutely nothing for throwing $1K at a laptop powered by nVidia card with an obvious manufacturing defect. Not to even mention Dell "support". 5. Cost. I wouldn't consider this the factor unless the price difference is really significant and you get better stuff for paying more. If nVidia had better cards in terms of e.g. run cooler, can overclock better and faster it would be fine. My choice: AMD. The lesser of two evils.
  21. Mass Effect 3 lol... I played multiplayer demo with some of my friends. ROFL.... all actions (except for movement keys) are about to Space.... good grief... who in the world thought that was a good idea/???? Also, can't aim properly every once in a while because my character model occupies 1/3 of the screen. da f....
  22. Last two were M11x? Prepare to be bedazzled. =)
  23. Grats! AW Thermal Paste = shitty thermal pads (small "sponges"). I didn't have any actual paste on chips. My answer is yes -- replace it. As far as the bag goes, I use Slappa Velocity Matrix, but they might not be as business looking either (at least there is no Alien head).
  24. Well my point is, there might be something buggy with the CURRENT version of the driver. What makes you think this is not the case? (It happened to me few times last few months with AMD drivers.) To figure out whether it is the CPU or GPU that is throttling you could run a CPU-based test such as wPrime and compare the result with someone else with a similar CPU (I'm sure Googling it you can find someone else's score with that CPU). For GPU, you can run any of the GPU benchmarks such as 3DMark06 or 3DMark Vantage and compare them with the scores here: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M - Notebookcheck.net Tech , they should be about the same.
