  1. They didn't. You upload the backup of your BIOS, made with Universal BIOS Backup Toolkit, plus the newest BIOS package from Lenovos website, to one of the filesharing websites, and one of the users do the mod for you and then re-upload it to that same site. Very simple.
  2. For some it's an imossible task, since they get error 104 using FPT regardless of having used the fix. My solution was going to www.bios-mods.com, and ask one of the members there to help me. Took less than 24 hours to get help as opposed to getting no help on here. My BIOS is now modded and my Y500 is running an Intel Wireless-AC 7260 connecting to WiFi networks @ 866Mbps.
  3. Just go here and ask: https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/Thread-REQUEST-Lenovo-Y500-Whitelist-removal?page=3 You'll get help in no time :-)
  4. Disregard my posts. Got someone over at www.bios-mods.com to help me. Their response-time is amazing! I asked for help yesterday afternoon and today I already have a flashable version of my BIOS. It works like a charm, I might add :-)
  5. Look at my previous post. It's the error I get when I try to use the FPT tool to either backup or flash my BIOS. Many others are getting it as well. There's even a fix for it, which works for some people. Appearently none of my flash chips are recognized by the FPT tool, even though they've both been added to fparts.txt.
  6. I'd very much like to know as well. It's the last hurdle I need to get past, in order for me to unlock my BIOS. I'm stuck with a shitty WiFi card in my Y500, which will only allow me to connect to 2.4GHz @ 72Mbit. An upgrade of the WiFi card is quite needed, since the rest of the laptop is awesome. Another solution would be that someone could make a modded version of the BIOS, which could be flashed with Lenovos own InsydeFlash. Yet another solution would be to modify platform.ini from InsydeFlash, in order for it to be able to flash the modded BIOS. Suggestions?
  7. Okay, using Universal BIOS Backup Toolkit I've successfully made a backup of my BIOS, and modded it with the BIOS fixer tool, but how do I flash it, when I keep getting error 104 with FPT? The 104-fix doesn't work for me :-( This is the error I get with FPT: Platform: Intel(R) HM76 Express Chipset Reading HSFSTS register... Flash Descriptor: Valid --- Flash Devices Found --- W25Q32BV ID:0xEF4016 Size: 4096KB (32768Kb) MX25L1605A ID:0xC22015 Size: 2048KB (16384Kb) Error 104: The 2 SPI flash devices do not have compatible command sets. The two flash devices has already been added to fparts: MX25L1605A, 0xC22015, 0x1000000, 0x1000, 0x20, 64, 0, 0x60, 80000 W25Q32BV, 0xEF4016, 0x2000000, 0x1000, 0x20, 64, 0, 0x60, 80000 Is there another piece of software, I can use to flash the modded BIOS?
  8. Hey octiceps Maybe you can help me, or at least point me to someone who can: I am still running into error 104, even with the fix in first post. I need to add these two to fparts: W25Q32BV ID:0xEF4016 Size: 4096KB (32768Kb) MX25L1605A ID:0xC22015 Size: 2048KB (16384Kb) Anyone able to help? EDIT: I have tried changing fparts.txt according to this, but to no avail: https://www.bios-mods.com/forum/archive/index.php?thread-15374-7.html EDIT #2: I did try and add those two to fparts.txt, but I still get the error. Also tried to change the 0x60 to 0xC7, but still no luck - still getting error 104. What gives? Kind regards, ShamblerDK

  11. 35-year-old IT-guy from Denmark here. I live in Nibe, which is a nice, cozy little coastal town :-) I've been using/working with computers since 1989, which has also made me quite knowledgeable when it comes to computer hardware/software. I do not do any programming though, but I am running a small gaming community, and hosting a gaming server running Minecraft (among others), with a few programmers attached. There are also a few gamers of course, and they all connect to my TeamSpeak server, which I am also hosting. My current mission: I have a Lenovo Y500, which I am looking into modding. I change laptops quite frequently and I always learn new stuff, whenever I disassemble one. In my line of work, I usually disassemble 2-3 laptops a day. This Y500 will be given to my fiancée, when I have fixed my MSI GT663, which is sporting a 2nd-gen i7 and an MXM GTX 570. Some of you might wonder why I change laptops frequently, and I can tell you this: Whenever people come here to get their laptop repaired, some of those people don't want to spend anything getting a laptop repaired; they'd rather buy a new one. Which means I sometimes get to take the broken laptop home with me, where I can often repair them for small amounts of money. Don't hesitate to ask me, if you have any questions.

    Flashing a Y500 with a Y580 bios? Possible?

I have a Y500 and I am very happy it doesn't have the Optimus-crap. I've been battling that in other laptops, in my line of work, and my experience is that it's way more trouble than it's worth, for the extra batteri time. The main issue is that many games don't know how to switch to the nVIDIA GPU - regardless of the settings in the nVIDIA Control Panel.

    Sata SSD or msata SSD

This picture might be valuable, for those who need some information about the Y500 SATA-controller: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/image/serverpage/image-id/20669i3ED20FAB23355295/image-size/original?v=mpbl-1&px=-1 You'll note that the connected drives are only connected with SATA 2 speeds, but the controller is indeed SATA 3. Also, if you look in the Intel Rapid Storage interface, the mSATA port also support SATA 3.
  15. Could a kind soul put the download on Dropbox or Mega? I'd very much like to upgrade my Y500.
