Actually I don't think you were the guy I was referring to but even if you're someone else I appreciate that you have experience in this matter :). I specifically was hoping to tear down the dlls and find the call that the energy management app makes to the EC to make it do a dust cleaning. If that is the best we can do it is still preferable to me than using a screen scraper app to press the "dust cleaning" button. Any control granularity found that is better than that would be a bonus.

This is exactly what IdeaFan does. Find it at forum.notebookreview.com/threads/ideafan-for-y510p-y500-g500-y580-y410p.796490/ or allstone.lt/ideafan/

Hello everyone, I'm sorry for the sabbatical. What with COVID and my move, it's been a crazy time in my life.

    The good news:

My eGPU open source project is not dead

Someone else has forked my project as of yesterday or today (what prompted me to make this post) so you may get it sooner than I can produce it from that person

I now have room to build up a proper electronics lab

    The bad news:

I just investigated that forked project and it appears for the time being it is private. We will see if it comes public at a later time. I encourage someone else in the community to try their hand at a fork

I have some other intervening projects including actually setting up my new electronics lab that will take up a lot of time

I never managed to pursue the guy who I found that has reverse-engineered the Lenovo energy management app for different reasons. I got him on Discord but never actually chatted with him. I can't remember if I mentioned this but I did find a guy who disassembled the app and am hoping there will be a way to control the fan with no hardware mod in software.

I have a job that requires lots of travel abroad, which will slow me down further

My Y510p has been on loan for a little while (also has a weird power issue I need to diagnose, but that's not for this thread)

For the time being, feel free to keep an eye on my open source project as well as looking out for a fork, which may produce results before I can. My biggest problem is getting proper differential pair routing on the board using Altium's software. It's still new to me and for some reason auto-routing is failing in this regard. That's where I left off. After there is a working model for the pcb I will be exploring a nifty cabled design that I think will be popular. I will try to be more active on this forum which will inspire me to concentrate more fully on this project, lol

    Edit: Forked project available here

    > I never managed to pursue the guy who I found that has reverse-engineered the Lenovo energy management app for different reasons.

    Well, whats your question?

    > I did find a guy who disassembled the app and am hoping there will be a way to control the fan with no hardware mod in software.

If this is the question - no, you cannot control fan from the software. Its in EC firmware btw, so you will have to disassemble that, code in fan control support, and then you possibly could control it. While working with IdeaFan I disassembled everything there was, from app up to a kernel/driver level. What I did not - did not disassembled the EC firmware. Its way easier to install hardware fan control (like someone shows in forums) than going EC modification way. So IdeaFan is using 100% what's available currently through software.

It says it has virus inside so it's a no go

Of course it says that because its made with autohotkey script and uses ctrl+shift+o global hot key to run fans even when you are gaming. Read more on "what" virus your scanner is reporting and you understand. https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/7257fcbcabd8a358262b4d73193d5aca9fc665701e1956c9a1659947b4acf182/detection

I suggest you to be using Avira, McAfee or other normal antivirus, not some bit defender which misinterprets what is virus and what is not.

@Swung Huang Good job! I am happy to see you are going to manufacture adapters for everyone. I will not be able to do that, my adapter works but my motherboard died (not caused by adapter, just one of the mosfets for bios shorted). So even if I can manufacture them I have no way to test it so I decided to buy new PC and leave it all behind. I think I will post all of my desings if anyone is interested.

I would be interested in the design !

  5. so I just bought the adapter. Hm, so I guess its the latest version. Do I still have to remove the 103 resistor? I just assumed I will get v3 already, but it seems I got v2, or is that resistor ok and should be like this to run geforce gtx with bios v3 ?

Can anyone tell me using this adapter with say a gtx 1080 how much of a bottleneck ultra bay slot connection be?  Whats the difference between this adaptor and the beast pci e adaptor?

beast is only 1x. This adapter is 8x. 8 more lines, so theoretically 8 times faster some pcie operations.

Well i did it but as you expected it didnt solve it. When i finally can bring my adapter to a professional who can solder it i will ask him to have a look at it but most probably you were right and it fried. Ive heard roumors that lenovo doesnt even put cooling paste on their ultrabay gpus so i wouldnt be surprised.

    Anyways thanks for the recommendations.

(If you feel that this problem is not at the right place in this thread let me know and i will delete my comments)

Lenovo puts cheap thermal pads. But on memory chips, there are none. First week I bought laptop I repasted it and put either quality thermal pads or paste on eGPU. Still works up to this day after, hm, maybe 3-4 years. I have y510p.

Totally agree, But given the current situation with prices and availability, I'd say it ain't bad idea to keep it. I almost wanted to pull the trigger on a brand new ryzen mini itx but the gains compared to a fully loaded y510p isn't worth it. I've been thinking to buy a top end haswell chip(like 4940MX) but not sure about the VRMs. I can still live with DDR3L memory just fine.

Not a problem, Tesla. You must make money for your work. Just share it when you pull a plug :) I hope my laptop will not be fried by then ;D

Awww.... Basically it's for my personal use. And it have several flaws to fix and I'm gonna do som improvement. Maybe I will sell them later, but it depends.I'm busy these days after all...

I for one would like to get a pcb design and try to make one by myself :) this computer is almost a relic now, which needs too much parts upgraded (+more but still not top speed ram, usb hub fixed as in time capacitors get bad and does not provide as much current as before, external gpu adapter + buy new gpu to play latest games or games in performace mode, upgrade intel wifi centrino which sucks, and haswell cpu..) in comparison to buying new one with desktop-grade gpu already in place.

But I still would like to see pcb design and try to solder the eGPU adapter by myself :) just because I like soldering :D

External GPU docks are expensive! Just wondering if it's worth the money to upgrade to an external GPU or should I just save the money towards a newer laptop.

Wrong forum thread maybe, because its about external GPU, but if you can get external GPU cheap now - upgrade to it. If you want to play some game which you cannot now - upgrade to it. But I myself am thinking that in 1-2 years there will be equally as good laptop with desktop version of the GPUs (like 1080) so I am saving for a new one.

Guys what do you think about the spectre/meltdown update that will arrive shortly from intel? Will it be a bios update or something else (meaning - so I flash my 3.08 stock to 3.05 modded, or do I wait) ?

I would not want to install new BIOS. It will slow down our PCs further. Haswell in y510/y410 is so slow and have heating problems, why would you want to slow it down even more with bios update? If its released that is. Of course another part of update will be Win10 update - this I think you cannot avoid if ure using Win10. Unless you need security, then I would suggest to buy new PC altogether with newer CPUs which does not have this error (Spectre and all others found). Because you know, they found same error in Nvidia GPUs (not amd though). Meaning you would also need new nvidia drivers and nvidia BIOS update. Which I would not want on this PC too, because it would slow it down even more...

I remember 3.05 there was no whitelist removal, so I had to go back to 2.07 modded for whitelist. Does 3.08 modded bios has whitelist removed? I also cannot download v3.08 modded, links are expired :( anyone knows how to download?

Hey guys i have idea about full time %100 fan solution. While updating bios the laptop fan is running at max speed like dust removal and it runs full time not in on/off periods. So if you can send the bios flashing data to EC instead of dust removal data  the fan will run at max speed without periods. I don't know how u doing this and i don't know what is the EC data for dust removal or bios flash so i can't help in script side but i think it is possible.

I believe nobody wrote a driver here - app just uses standard lenovo energy driver which does not contain any other sequences. And EC is locked btw. So you would need to debug the bios somehow to know what to send where.. And then write the windows driver. Too much of a hassle. And btw it could be just some energy state right there, in which Windows cannot even run..

Either way it dosent matter how many lanes you have, as pcie 3.0 8lanes is enough to run 1080ti without any bottleneck (and that card is 30% better than vega 64/gtx1080 ), it only matters for sli witch is not the case for our adapter.

Maybe navi and/or volta will need more but for the time being it really dosent matter ^^

Pardon, but I thought 1080ti as well as gtx1080 are nvidia and only AMD runs on this adapter, leaving vega 64 for now ?

Very well. I think this adapter is really a good life extension of this notebook and I am interested in one.

I started a doodle so all interested people should sign it (so we can have a number of interested people for the dev. to decide if he want to make more of them). If Gerard is not interested in making a new pcb batch, i'd like to know if he could share/sell the PCB schematic so I could make my own without much trial and error.

Here is the link for the doodle below. Please put your username there.

    http://doodle.com/poll/we7phzidv3vyqfkh#table

Well, I was thinking of making this adapter myself (by destroying second GPU to extract/desolder the connector) and asked @gerald for sharing the design/pcb and how to make it. But he did not share. So I am hoping either he will share it when he is done making them and Ill make external GPU or Ill buy new PC in a meantime :o

  16. @Zwierzak and @TheReciever just stop it please. That discussion is unhealthy. From my POV, you are both right. I understand both positions. Just drop it, ok?

Lets keep this discussion a bit less personal and a bit more professional, because I (and others) had LONG pages to read, but no substantial info to go forward.

Soo.. @gerald whats the difference between v1 and v2 adapters? Was hard for me to find any differences between the posts..
