  1. Hi guys, so is Akitio Thunder3 any good after all? Or not worth bothering / get Thunder2?
  2. Hi @goalque do you know if it's possible to use AMD Crossfire if I have rMBP with Nvidia GPU not only Iris?
  3. Oooh so good to hear it will work with eGPU! I am using external SSD for Bootcamp now. It works great. If I don't plug in SSD my MBPr is 100% OSX, no traces of Bootcamp (messed up OSX before by trying to access Bootcamp partition from OSX etc.). Was hoping to keep same setup for eGPU. Installing Windows8 on this external SSD was quite a trip though (I don't even remember the details now, but took me a bit).
  4. Hi guys, I am about to pull the trigger on this $1k+ build - can someone please confirm that this will actually work together? Planning to use it with rMBP-15" 2014 (GT750M) hooked to external display (currently torn between XR34CKA that is not yet available, xb280hk and XB27HU, leaning towards 34 inch though). EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti, Silverstone ML07B - System Build - PCPartPicker Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti 6GB HYBRID Video Card ($719.99 @ Amazon) Case: Silverstone ML07B HTPC Case ($66.98 @ Newegg) Power Supply: Silverstone 600W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular SFX Power Supply ($117.99 @ Directron) Other: Akitio Thunder 2 ($218.00) Other: 2pcs CCTV video balun 5.5X2.5mm ($2.00) @Dschijn, @Tech Inferno Fan - sorry for pinging directly - just thought you guys will definitely know the answer. @Dschijn thanks a lot! super excited to get into eGPU soon.
  5. Yeah actually.. The ultimate thing seems to be the Kingping edition from EVGA. Do you think I need some special considerations regarding the case? Or I can just get RVZ01 and it will be fine? I am not planning to go to the extreme OC that calls for watercooling though. Also please let me know if I should move this from here to some other thread. I think the SLI question is closed.
  6. Hmm so judging by the fact that there is only squinks' implementation and its only for Iris (I have 750M) MBP.. it seems SLI is really not going to happen. Alas. I guess the only way to future-proof the setup is to get Titan At least there is no problem with the case then.
  7. Hello, I looked at the thread about enclosures and RVZ01 looks pretty good for 980ti. However I don't want to rule out the possibility of adding another 980ti in future for SLI. I am not sure RVZ01 would hold 2 980tis (G1 Gaming). Wold Cooler Master Elite work? Or should I look into something like microATX mini Tower? What is the best way to evaluate if in case would work for SLI? Not sure how much space the GPU will need inside / how much space to leave for Akitio.
  8. Ok, @Dschijn I see, thank you very much. I guess it's Dell then. What do you mean 980 not working with MBP? I saw people using it with Sonnet (or here) and thought Akitio will be same except for some power supply adjustments / risers.
  9. Thank you @Dschijn regarding 3D on OSX - that would be nice to have actually for some rendering stuff for example - I occasionally do 3D-intensive applications and really hate Win interface for work. Two question 1) If I go for a miniDp-only monitor (LG) will I be able to get eGPU on OSX? 2) What is the actual benefit of TB display in this eGPU scenario? Thank you!
  10. OSX + Bootcamp Windows8 Optimus is nice to have but since I will be using monitor, I can just run everything on the monitor and have rMBP in clamshell.
  11. I thought given that curved ultra-wides are latest and greatest they may deserve their own thread.. I have rMBP with 750M and now choosing a monitor for eGPU. I am choosing between Dell U3415W and LG 34U97C I was leaning towards Dell until I realized LG has Thunderbolt port. No idea if it's beneficial or not. So in terms of being eGPU-friendly which one is better? Dell has: 1 HDMI(vr2.0) connector 1 MHL connector 1 Mini DisplayPort 1 DisplayPort (version 1.2) 1 DisplayPort out (MST) 1 Audio Line out5 4 USB 3.0 ports - Downstream (4 at the back) 2 USB 3.0 port - Upstream LG has: 2 HDMI™ 1 Headphone Out 1 Display Port 2 ThunderBolt If it matters for eGPU I am planning to get AkiTio with GeForce GTX 980.
  12. Do you guys think something like massdrop.com could be a good way to get them sell enclosure at reduced price? Or there won't be enough interest? It works for Ergodox for example.
  13. Thanks a lot @goalque I just asked in that thread about Optimus. It might actually be a total deal breaker for me.. I don't really own an LCD monitor and was not intending to buy one (in that case I might as well add some money and buy a PC). There is no way around the internal LCD limitation with GT750M?
  14. @squinks, @ReaverM1 I see you guys have GT750M. I also have the rMBP with GT750 and was really excited about eGPU-ing it. However the inability to use rMBPs LCS might halt my efforts (I actually do not own an LCD). There is absolutely no chance to use internal LCD? No workarounds, no hot-swaps, no special Window boot schemes / builds?
  15. Hello guys, I recently found out about eGPU and it really resonates with my lifestyle and setup. I have 4 questions - about feasibility, enclosure for eGPU, expandability and Thunderbolt booting. 1) I have rMBP 2014 (GT 750M) 16GB RAM etc. I know Iris is recommended, but I can't see myself downgrading any time soon. Will 750M cause much troubles for Win 8.1 eGPU? 2) I plan to use AkiTio but all the builds I see have wires and internals exposed. I would rather have everything in one box (hopefully with a handle haha). I am not up to date with current PC industry (last one i built was in 1999-2000) Would it be possible to get some small HTPC -type enclosure that will both provide 75Watt to GPU and house the modded AkiTio Thunder 2? 3) Is it safe to say that I would be always able to upgrade my GPU in this setup? Extra bonus to anyone who can recommended a good GPU for about $500. 4) I am booting Win 8.1 off external Thunderbolt enclosure and it works nicely. I wonder if that would have to change with eGPU? I have 2 Thunderbolt ports, so it seems I can actually use both of them - one for eGPU another for Win 8.1 Thank you very much for reading this. Excited to hear your advice.
