  1. One thing you should do is disable Intel Turboboost so it stop overclocking the CPU. You can use ThrottleStop to do that. Or use this method: Disabling Intel Turbo Boost - Tautvidas Sipavi?ius Applying Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste is a good idea too.
  2. I tried various the Intel graphic drivers from intel.com and lenovo.com, none of them can install, including this one. I tried running with SLI disabled and using modified bios to disable nVidia cards and enable integrated Intel GPU only, the driver still say the hardware isn't found. I now have an 'Unknown device' in Computer Manager, I can only assume it's the Intel GPU. I'm figuring the issues is due to the nVidia Optimus technology. Edit: I guess with official bios and ultrabay removed, then the Intel graphic driver would work. I read that you need to remove the ultrabay card first. But I think using the modified bios, I run into several issues, sometimes with the laptop video won't load, tweaking the bios settings and set it to use Intel card only will load, but then my SSD couldn't detect (unless I switch SATA mode to IDE) and USB drive can't detect in boot selection menu. I think it has to do with the modified bios not being fully compatible, the larger one, which give more bios options. Is it possible that since when I built the modified bios using my official bios, I was using SLI at that time, so the settings at that time contribute to the modified bios?
  3. I actually enjoyed the time more than lotr though lacking in plot in comparison. I recommend not buying the second one (Smaug) though, that was a headache to sit through.sent via tapatalk
  4. Thanks, I wiped out the hdd that came with the laptop, would this be possible to restore to it? I assume this is legal and the activation key is kept in your bios? sent via tapatalk
  5. I am running SLI with Windows 7 and Kubuntu 14.04 with latest nVidia drivers, there is no freezing or crashing. Maybe you should look into it and get a replacement while you still can. I also notice with the unlocked bios it allow to disable turbo boost and is disabled by default. My Y510p run really cool with it disabled, I have yet to see either of the CPU or GPUs getting to 70*C. sent via tapatalk
  6. I am using Kubuntu 14.04 beta and is delighted. It boot even with SLI, and after installing the nVdia driver looks like even SLI is functional.
  7. The program you are mentioning look like it's use to create live bootable drive, not create bootable OS running from a portable drive. I don't think Windows allow you to run from a portable drive. (Yes I know there are mods and work around that attempt to do it, but it's not official.) Linux however can run and boot from a portable drive. If you want, you can use Clonezilla, which is used to make 100% exact drives copy. I guess you can use Rufus to create a bootable drive of Clonezilla.
  8. Looks like with those programs you want more than performance, you need a quality screen. A poor screen can make the job very unenjoyable and bad for your eyes. Get something with 1080p and IPS screen. In fact, I would get a 17" laptop and IPS screen and sacrifice some performance, If it's still Core i5 and midrange video card, it'll still be good enough. The Lenovo Y510p isn't too horrible, but not great either, it could be helped if you use a colorimeter. I don't like recommending Sony or Apple, but they have nice screens.
  9. Imo, installing a quality SSD and a fresh Windows installation is what can substantially increase performance. The 5400rpm hdd can hold back the laptop. sent via tapatalk
  10. I bought a refurb Lenovo Y510p with SLI. Although if I had known they were employing locked bios I would not have bought it. Would have gotten an Asus instead, even if no SLI, I don't support this business models of locking hardware that you purchased with your hard earned money. sent via tapatalk
  11. I have been watching several old Tim Burton movies. I'm also watching the new Cosmos series. sent via tapatalk
  12. It's not an issue for me, although I manually disable Intel Turbo Boost. After over an hour of playing Skyrim, my CPU and GPUs are at mid 60*C. To disable Turbo Boost, you can use ThrottleStop, but there is a quicker way without apps needed: -Click on the Battery Charging icon in the system tray, select "More power options" -In the Power Options window, click on "Change plan settings" -On the Edit Plan Settings window, click on "Change advanced power settings" -In Advanced settings window, scroll down until you see "Processor power management" in the list, expand it and expand "Maximum processor state" -For "Maximum processor state" option and "Plugged in", set the percentage to 99%. This will make it so the CPU never overclock itself. I never have issues with heat after doing this.
  13. I always trust Samsung and Crucial, I use them for both ram and ssd, very fast performance and reliable. They might not be the cheapest option.
