Looks like it still crashes with precision x off. still crashes with RTSS off. the only thing I can try when i have the time is either older intel drivers and a full reformat. but then if it is crashing without intel drivers installed then it has to be something in the operating system that's causing it.
-
ok it seems it's working now so long as precision X isn't running on start up...probably because i am using an older version that's causing the issue but i am typing this while in optimus mode. i probably won't install precision x while i have the 980M at stock until i can confirm it works in dedicated mode for my system. I am gonna reboot back into dedicated then into optimus and see if it is still ok.
-
strange, it works fine in dedicated mode and i am worried that a 980M won't work in dedicated mode either and spending a lot of dough just to find out is a tough sell. it crashes when there's no driver installed and it has been wiped with DDU as well as with the intel driver installed. the last thing to do is a full reformat and install of the OS but can't really do that right now....a bit late.

I have no idea why if I switch back to Optimus that the pc decides to crash after logging in.
-
Optimus is freezing on me probably because I installed the nvidia drivers first so gonna have to reinstall both Intel and nvidia to test.
-
OSDs like AB and precision x can get confused with which is running.
-
i am not sure about that. i am still wondering if the 347.09 drivers will throttle and block OC when in optimus mode.
-
in manage 3d settings it will show an extra drop down with the integrated or dedicated gpu as options.
-
it should be in the nvidia control panel.
-
so does the 347.09 driver throttle even in optimus mode or does it just not let you OC (as opposed the 344.75 drivers)? i know it doesn't let you OC but even with the stock vBIOS will the 347.09 throttle the 900M cards when in optimus mode as opposed to dedicated mode?
-
OK cos it wouldn't make sense if the venting grills were in the way.
-
So you still modded the laptop case to make use of the cooling?
-
wait? still kinda confused about how it works.

Alienware 17 GTX 970M upgraded huge problems
thegh0sts replied to Brainiac92's topic in Alienware M17x / AW 17
do you have to go through the bios and change some settings for it to work? -
i hope that the unlocked vbios will be updated to where it makes the GPUs usable and I am happy to hold out until they have been updated.
-
i wonder how common that is? i'd be ok with running with optimus though.
-
I might go with hidevolution as they're a bit cheaper and they said it comes with the same gear.
-
Eurocom said there's no difference between the kits.
-
OK, I bookmarked the Alienware 17 980M but I have sent an email to their sales dept to see if i can just grab either one.
-
is there a difference between the alienware 18 and alienware 17 980Ms for the ones sold on Eurocom?
-
what's the best place to get the 980M online? tempted to go eurocom but any other recommended resellers = good!
-
for alienware owners, has anyone tried disconnecting the battery and only running on mains to see if that stops the GPU from throttling in dedicated mode? i might just be grasping at straws here. it might not do anything other than give an annoying message but i would like to see what happens.
-
i wonder what would happen if you ran an AW17 with a 980m in dedicated mode without the battery plugged in so it was only running on mains?
-
i plan on making some upgrades to current AW17 before it carks it and hopefully by then something good will turn up!
