  1. wow thats odd. and you said it throttles still at ~67? the only other thing id try is exit msi kombuster, and test it the same way but in a game (windowed mode). i use skyrim. edit* just thought of something.. you've been foolin around with nvidia inspector right? sometimes it's a bit screwy and stuff (which is why i dont like it.) For example, this is taken from the link below: perhaps it is forcing P0 for whatever reason. you may need to go back to defaults, by creating a .bat file and putting it into the same directory as the nvinspector exe. put this into the .bat and then run it: taken from http://tinyurl.com/c2m9tfa
  2. i can tell you what i've done I've repasted, removed the ram cage, and clean the vents, and now i don't see my cpu temps go past lower 80s. and even that's rare.
  3. I used that method before the 331 driver came out. It's more of a bandaid, and it will always have a constant clock (meaning no idle clock). I like how it has the lower idle clocks with the new driver, if im using photoshop or something, i don't need my clocks at full. It will help to prolong the life of the card im sure .
  4. hmmm weird. i havent noticed that. can you check in nvidia inspector what powerstate thats in when you notice it at 835?
  5. Hey there johannesynt I'll try to answer your questions as best i can. Nvidiainspector is one way, i personally use msiafterburner as it is just easier to use. P8 - This is your "Idle" state, when in this state your 650m gpu is on, but is not being utilized. sometimes happens with certain programs. P5 - This is the normal operating state when you use the 650m. Stock clock is 745mhz. P0 - This is your "boost" state. When needed, the driver will boost from 745 to to 835 mhz This was merely a bandaid i came up with, it forces you to use P5, so there will be no throttle (throttling happens in P0 - the boost powerstate) I don't reccomend doing this anymore, because driver version 331.65 disables the P0 state (by accident-its a bug apparently) so you can only go between p8 and p5. The nice thing about this is with the modded bios, you can overclock it to reach better clocks. I personally have not found the ceiling, if there even is any. I have not seen over 75 on my gpu. This is why I reccomend using afterburner, it has an option to automatically do this. Although if your keen on using inspector, there is a way This is why i say it's more of a bandaid then a fix. some people create two bat files and switch between the two, when they need to. I prefer just using msi afterburner and driver version 331.65 I have mine at 1125 mhz core and 3000mhz mem. if i go to 1150 i get driver crashes.these numbers are beside GPU CLOCK in nvinspector as it shows what your clock is even if your not using your gpu.
  6. if you upgrade to unlocked a13 the stock clocks havent changed so you can manually increase it to 900 if thats what you want
  7. yes only if you had installed windows using uefi. my mistake ill edit the post.
  8. no, there is A10 A11 and A13 floating aroound. see my post for a13
  9. @johannesynt Yes, you can reflash the dell default one at any time over the modded one, without issue. and yes you can still use legacy for win8, it just might take a couple seconds longer to boot up using that instead of uefi though. @doogser what is the problem? are you getting an error message? please list out the steps you took when flashing the bios.. maybe just a hiccup. I know for a fact it works, as i just reflashed mine yesterday using this post.
  10. I have, but re-pasting doesn't fix the problem. the problem is still there. The only way ive found to fix the throttling is be on 331.65 drivers, and a modded bios to overclock (instead of boost)
  11. make sure you are on a13 stock before you do this. also, if i remember correctly thats what mind said as well about the xxxxxx does not exist. its not an error its supposed to say that. it should be unlocked after that.
  12. I have some findings that I think you would all like to know, including the alienware team.. I found this in the notes for 331.65 driver version: "Here are some bugs still open with this driver (updated 10/31/13): 1358403 - Desktop browser freezes/crashes with Geforce 460/560 cards 1392369 - GPU Boost not working with some notebook GPUs 1394264 - Optimus: Can't use dGPU after update to Windows 8.1. 1394783 - GK104: Folding@Home perf..." I am now using driver version 331.65, and have noticed no boost, but ALSO NO THROTTLE. I have talked to a couple users on notebookreview here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-14-m14x/731803-alienware-m14xr2-users-doomed-6.html and we have found that indeed does not throttle on 331.65. BUT this is actually a bug. So Bittersweet. Now, dont be too excited.. as throttling only happens in the "boost" powerstate, and there is a bug that prevents boost from working. So, no boost=no throttle. When this bug is fixed It will be possible that the throttleing will return along with the boost. you can keep updated on the ideastorm page: Idea Storm
  13. Hmm I am not too sure. Ask @svl7 as this is all of his work.. he might know.
  14. i've removed it, i dont notice a huge improvement, if at any.
  15. As that may be, we shouldn't have to resort to some 3rd party program to un-cripple this machine. It is an issue, and I along with some others I'm sure, will not stop banging my head until that wall is down. We paid too much money to be unfairly treated like this when the AW14 recieved a prompt update addressing this exact issue.
  16. Link -> Idea Storm Us R2 owners have been waitng over a year for a fix, please help us and vote, it takes less than 10 seconds to register and no email activation required
  17. ^^ no not if you change it back after. as for the links i guess they expired. Ill have to get @Michael to update + add them to @svl7 's thread.
  18. hmm i havent experienced any crashes on my end like you've described. That's weird.
  19. Ahh I see now. Thanks, it's fixed. Yes, I noticed it does not have it boosted to 950, but you can do that in afterburner or other overclocking program. I wouldn't say its mandatory.
  20. I didn't include anything with the bin file. you have to follow svl7's instructions as per step 4 to get the rest of the files Also, I do recall having the bd prochot option in a11, but what exactly does it do? i read somewhere to turn it off to save from high temps or something,
  21. Hey guys, I know some of you wanted an unlocked A12/A13, so here it is! First off, this bios DOES NOT fix gpu throttling. Alienware needs to fix this. Anyways, I've been testing the A13 bios for @svl7 and @Michael; All credit goes to them for this. This bios provides unlocked menu in the bios and unlocks overclocking I have flashed using the FPT Method. I'll try to lay out the steps here: 1.) Make sure you are on an unmodified A13 Bios from Dell 2.) Download the [FPT] zip file in this post and open it up . You will see a .BIN file extract it and rename it to m14xr2.bin 3.) Next you are going to want to go into that bios at boot (f2) and make sure it's set to legacy boot and NOT UEFI. 4.) Then you are going to want to follow the instructions by svl7 (the second method, DOS flashing) and grab the rest of the files here: http://forum.techinferno.com/alienware-m18x-aw-18/1966-%5Bm18x-r2%5D-unlocked-bios-versions.html 5.) After you flash you have to change back to UEFI (secure boot + fast boot) if you are on windows 8 (and you installed windows using uefi, if not then skip this). I also had to change my raid type to AHCI. ********Disclaimer: I do not nor does svl7 or Michael take responsibility if something goes wrong. All responsibility for flashing and any damage done is on you.******** Finally, I'd like to once again thank svl7 and Michael for their work. It would not be possible without them, so show your thanks! [FPT]-[M14R2]-A13UnBiosUnVbios.zip
  22. you would need to flash to an a11 with a modded vbios. i am currently testing a modified A13, which should be releasing soon. instructions for flashing FPT are here: http://forum.techinferno.com/alienware-m18x/1966-%5Bm18x-r2%5D-unlocked-bios-versions.html also.. are you sure you are using the nvidia card and not the integrated?
  23. I recall somewhere he said that it would be close to impossible without a hardware mod of some sort. I'll try and dig it up. EDIT: Yes, here's the post:
