No. You can use Blu-Ray over USB 2.0 at 640 Mbps just fine, that's about half the bandwidth of SATA 1. By the way, the response I got back was that they were out of stock indefinitely.

Well I got lucky on the SSD. It was a Newegg Deal of the Day, and lasted for all of three minutes before they got sold out. I popped on at 1pm on the nose, added to cart and checked out. After I had thoughts that I should have bought more, but by the time I went back to check out they were all sold out. You will now find a glutton of these on eBay now for $300-$350 though, lol, most likely everyone buying them from newegg.

Well, there's really no reason for any CPU or GPU to exceed 85C if it has a proper cooling system. Most CPU's and GPU's these days have a 95C to 105C Tmax, and getting within 20C of that is cause for alarm.

I dunno. I've had the Desktop replacement and can't say it's for me. It's nice, but overpriced and not as portable as I had hoped. But nice job on the screenies.

Thanks StevenX, looks like I have a buyer for my Sager NP8170 and was leaning away from M14x because lack of ability to game on battery, so was just going to go with NP8130. But with this I may go back to M14x. One question on your procedure in first post. You state: 1. Step 1, hit f2 on bootup and go into bios. 2. Choose Advanced tab. (Note also make sure you have stock bclk) 3. F10 to save and exit. So what do you DO in Advanced tab? It looks like you just choose advanced tab and then save and exit. I guess I'm not sure what this accomplishes? In any case if I get an M14x I will be sure to link to this post at NBR if you're ok with that. I'm not sure why they haven't kicked me either, lol. I've ruffled a few feathers over there too. Over an hour with Bad Company 2 is commendable, especially considering you probably get much better frames than with the M11x R1.

@coolguystan - Not a bad choice. I'm leaning that direction too now. Primarily because M14x seems to score pretty low performance on battery, and that was one thing I was looking for, to replace that functionality of my M11x. But I can't get any hard numbers from anywhere for someone to run their 3DMark06 or Vantage or 3DMark11 with 555m on battery to get a comparison. Did you get the upgraded 95% gamut screen or stock matte?

M14x dimensions 13.3 x 10.2 x 1.5 = 203.5 cu in 6.5 lbs HP DV6t 14.9 x 9.7 x 1.3 = 187.9 cu in 5.8 lbs Sager NP5165 14.7 x 9.8 x 1.3 = 187.3 cu in 5.7 lbs M14x is deeper just not as wide, but total volume is actually more than similar 15" laptops and heavier by 0.75 lbs. It's a mystery however why on the Sager they opted for the 128-bit 555m instead of 192-bit because TDP and power consumption should be about the same, plus only put in a 6-cell 62WHr battery.

I'd like to put in my application if I get an M14x which it's looking that way. Just have to sell my NP8170 and will probably place my order.

Well, considering the M14x is volumetrically equal to a 15.6" notebook i wouldn't say it's a little 14". And Acer Aspire TimelineX fits a full mobile quad i7 and GT 540m in a 13" package, and the LG P330 has quad i7 and 555m in a 13" package. But in any case, if the GPU is the bottleneck, it would be creating the most heat because it would be maxed out and the CPU wouldn't have to work as hard, at least to feed the GPU, because it'd be waiting on it. But good to hear the mobo fixed the issue. If I end up going with an M14x I'll probably end up repasting anyhow. Dell's paste is usually crap and their pasting jobs have a lot to be desired.

Thanks! Wonder why SATA 1 speeds? It uses an HM67 motherboard right? It can support two SATA III and four SATA II drives. I can't imagine SATA 1 would be any cheaper. But in my case my 256GB SSD is the WD SiliconEdge Blue, and even though sequential reads/writes are about 200 MB/s it will rarely ever be used for sequential.

NP8130 won't game on battery though. Everything is so gimped when on battery it's like a netbook, seriously. I am ok gaming at non-native resolution too, it doesn't bother me like it does most people. 1280x720 scales down nicely on a 1920x1080 screen. The 5165 gets about 4.5 hours "real" use from what I've seen, and 8130 about 3 hours, but the 5165 has better performance on battery. So far I'm finding out though that the 555m in the 5165 is severely gimped with the 128-bit 555m. But the 192-bit 555m in the M14x and XPS 17 can overclock to near gtx 460m stock speeds. I currently own an NP8170 and M11x that I'm trying to sell, buy a mid-range laptop to replace both, and pocket the rest, so price is also a factor. Hard to justify an extra ~ $300 on the M14x over the HP or Sager when it doesn't offer all the features I want. Although I'm drawn to it for the GPU, backlit keyboard, and build construction.

Man, this is a huge dilemma for me: DV6t vs M14x vs NP5165 vs NP8130 DV6t has everything I like and is cheapest. But OpenGL support is wonky and no way to overclock GPU. M14x has the more powerful 192-bit 555m but glossy screen and no 1080p and no blu-ray and most expensive NP5165 has everything I need. But only 6-cell battery and the 128-bit 555m. NP8130 is perfect, except performance on battery is dismal (3DMark06 ~ 3500). From stuff I've read on XPS 17 with 555m which is same as 5165 it can overclock to near GTX 460m stock performance, but not sure about the NP5165. Why is there never the perfect combination of components in a machine for a reasonable price? Seems there never is! But I have to ask myself how important is blu-ray, 1080p, and gaming on battery to me.

Sagers are nice, I can vouch for them. But remember you can always play games at 720p too, you're not restricted to native resolution. I don't know why people get so hung up on that. On the other hand, the NP5165 has the 128-bit 555m vs the 192-bit 555m in the M14x. The one in M14x is definitely better.
