eGPU experiences [version 2.0]

Hello guys. I've got a problem with my egpu set. My spec is 8460p + gtx 660 (asus) + pe4l 2.1b (psu corsair cx430). Before, I had gtx560ti and it worked very well. I had not problems with getting 1.2opt. Now when I use "EC Gen. 1.0" option in bios it works like a charm. I can hot plug it in W7. But after that when I change option in bios (my bios is f.42 btw) sure the card can start up. I do even get view on external screen, but after some time (sometimes few sec) I hear the sound of unplugging device and internal screen lights up.

That's a sign of a weak signal strength since your PE4L is capable of running GEN2, but only for a short instance. This is often caused by a bad cable (it's quite fragile during bending etc.) or the notebooks EC-slot.

I found that the $99 EXP GDC v6.0 (shipping + 220W fanless AC-adapter included) has a superior signal strength compared to the PE4L, the EXP GDC also have socketed cable so that you detach it and easily transport it w/o harming the cable.

I tested my EXP GDC's signal strength by adding different HDMI pigtails in between, the result yielded no signal loss/no performance loss!

I'd put the PE4L on the shelf of fossils and go for the EXP GDC.

Well, I wrote to bplus and I can send back the adapter but I dont think this is sensible idea. It can turn out the adapter actually isn't faulty and I'll have to pay for the shipping (in both ways) In addition I live far away so the shipping will last long and there is possibility I'll pay a tax (again :/)... Instead of that I can buy new hdmi cable (friend told me he changed it for this one: http://gsmok.pl/pliki_opis/norm_160820_IMG_2065.jpg and it worked on 1.2opt) and solder it precisely. Ofcourse I would like to change my pe4l for exp gdc, but I can't generate more cost right now.

Holy crap!

Well I've seen bad things happening with notebooks when soldering their own eGPU cables. If you're a really really good at soldering and can ensure no cables would short out in the long run, sure go for it =)

Your friend made his own cable for the PE4L2.1b? Is he active here on the forum, would be cool to see his work!

EDIT: There are no import taxes from yoybuy ;)

I wouldn't solder it by myself. I would rather order it to some specialist. I think it won't cost much. This guy I was writing about isn't exactly my friend. He is a colleague from other forum. You can see his work here: Zewntrzna karta graficzna - Forum Notebookcheck.pl . I asked him about the cable he used and he send me that model which I posted earlier.

Hi, I have Dell XPS 1640 with PM45 (ICH-9M).

Is somebody use PE4H ver2.4 with double link ?

If you search for "1640" at http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/6578-implementations-thunderbolt-expresscard-mpcie-egpus.html you'll find that there is a x4 1.0 implementation with your system by user Derbish.

Really? No import/custom fees from youbuy to Europe?

Edit: about the PSU they provide, how is it going to be attached to the exp gdc? DC jack or what? In their site the images are not really clear. Also, there seems to be no reviews about exp gdc.

Thanks.

No, I have not payed any so far since it's sent as gift :)

Same on Aliexpress and other chinese sites.

The only thing that could surprise you is when you put in 0.500 grams (sometimes suggested) when the items actual weight is 1500 grams, then they'll ask for extra shipping fee of ~$20 or so.

Does anybody test how Mantle work in eGPU ?

I think Mantle is best for eGPU.

Also it will be intrested to see test games like Crysus 3, smooth on Unreal engine 3 or later version.

Hi everyone I have a few questions. Can you pair a nvidia gpu with an amd apu? I know you can do it but will there be any conflict of some sort? Would I benefit from an egpu setup with my new HP Pavilion 17? I'm not getting the performance i want out of it graphically.

Laptop specs:

OS-Win7

cpu-AMD A6-5200 quad core

igpu-Radeon hd 8400

ram-8gb

I have a mini pcie slot that my network card is in. I believe it doesnt have any usb pins. Would the PE4H with PCIEMM and PM3N work? Im thinking of getting a 350w psu and geforce gtx 750ti superclocked. The main question is will this setup work? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Today a friend from forum gave me an opportunity to check my hardware on his laptop. He is also an user of eGPU so I could check my laptop with his setup as well. The result of our diagnosing is faulty notebook, whatever that means. We checked my things (adapter, gpu and psu) with his adapter and notebook one by one. Everything was just fine. The problem occured when we checked his setup with my laptop. We couldn't start it up. My question is what can be wrong with my computer? Is it EC slot? The system was fresh, BIOS reflashed (default config). I don't have any other EC device to check it. I'll contact with HP service.

Asus gtx 660 dc2 top, pe4l 2.1b, corsair cx430, EB 8460p

<del></del>Hmm.. Does it do any difference if you hold the EC in fully in by hand? (normally it ejects 2mm after 'locking' to the slot).

I've had a system that had a bad EC-slot which I found working if I did this. Give it a try and let me know how it goes!

EDIT: "We couldn't start it up" That's a good sign, since the system recognizes the eGPU and therefore halting the boot!

Elitebooks will power on but with a black screen and (occasional) LEDs flashing if the eGPU is powered and connected to the EC slot. You either need to use the PCI Reset Delay switch to prevent the BIOS seeing the eGPU or hotplug the powered eGPU into the EC slot after BIOS boot but before OS boot by hitting F8/F12 to halt Win7/8 loading.

We tried different ways, I mean hotplugging after BIOS boot or after Windows startup. With my notebook it didn't work. Sometimes gpu was recognised but there were problems with driver (same as I wrote few post earlier).

@jacobsson

Yea my slot is strange. Sometimes there is a click sound when I stick it. Sometimes not. I guess if spring is pushed in and I unplug the adapter, it stays in that position. Sometimes adapter is pushed out if plugged too hard. In my friend's laptop he plugs it very easly. I think I can try to push it and hold it in that deep position for some period of time. I don't remember if tried it before.

@bamil

Ok then I suggest you test my proposition earlier, I worked for me. I'll have to mention that I did use the EXP GDC for this (the PE4L didn't respond to this method), so it clearly have a stronger data signal. Please report back when you tested this with your PE4L.

Ok, no matter how hard I push it system behaves in similar ways. Screen is blinking few times like the device was turning on and off again. It stops with gpu connected with no codes in DM but driver isn't recognised (no bios/clocks in gpu-z) or without gpu connected. So it is nothing new :P. I'm not a specialist but it looks like the port can't negotiate gen 2.0.

@bamil

Ok, that sucks!

These are the option I can come up with right now:

Either you return the system for repair or take a chance on the $99 EXP GDC kit (including 220W AC-adapter and shipping).

I'd personally go for the repair option if you have guarantee left?

Yes I do. I'll try to use carepack first. If I won't succeed I'll have to send it for normal guarantee. Anyway, thanks for help jacobsson!

No problem buddy, I hope it works out for you!
