  1. If Apple had a product that does what this thread is doing, then yes. But since they don't, current Mac users have to build their own eGPU and hence here we are. The difference is that Villagetronic has a product that does all the DIY stuff (other than buying your own video card) for you. If you have a problem with their product, then you should go to them to help because that's why you paid them instead of DIY. What if we offered a solution but it made things worse? What if Villagetronic doesn't cover whatever we suggested? You paid for a product, so they should provide assistance that won't ruin their warranty.
  2. I'll try that on the weekend. And I thought it was a Win 8 problem. I guess it's Lenovo?
  3. Ok first annoyances starting to pop up. Windows 8 seems to be a lot slower loading up and shutting down now. Also, occasionally when I restart, my external GPU doesn't load up properly. When I try to go to nVidia control panel, it gives me an error saying not currently using a display attached to an nVidia GPU.
  4. It's more likely to do with the anti-glare coating since the backlight (LED and CCFL) wouldn't differ much.
  5. If you want Thunderbolt, look at Lenovo Edge S430 or T430s (not 100% sure if the latter has one though), Acer Aspire S5, or Asus G55. Personally, I wouldn't get a Mac if you're just going to Bootcamp to Windows. And yes, I own a Mac (MBP15 2010, which my dad now has).
  6. Finally got all my parts together and my eGPU is up and running! Pretty much plug n play. Connected the PSU to the eGPU and plugged in expresscard into my W520. Windows 8 immediately found it and installed the appropriate drivers. Restarted then went into the BIOS and turned GPU to integrated but with Optimus detection. Loaded up and installed the latest nVidia drivers, restarted again and Optimus is running perfectly. Automatically switched to my GTX 650 Ti 2GB and played SC2 on Extreme settings (maxed out on my Quadro 2000M on Medium settings). Mind = blown. Will run benchmarks later. I'm actually going to be flying everyday in the next week, so maybe next weekend I'll update things. Thanks Tech Inferno Fan and everyone else (in the numerous posts I've read). It was a very simple project to do. Hopefully when I have some time, I'll experiment was an old Xbox 360 PSU and make a portable enclosure.
  7. I think it also depends on who does the finish. Not all glossy or matte screens are the same. I've used good glossy screens (like my last Acer laptop) outdoors. I don't like the fingerprint magnet of touchscreen glossy panels though.
  8. So I currently have the latest Intel iGPU drivers and nVidia notebook dGPU drivers installed. I disable the dGPU in the BIOS, then install the nVidia desktop eGPU drivers and it should work without Setup 1.1x. If it doesn't I'll figure out the Setup 1.1x thing... what is this MBR? Master boot record?
  9. Is the DSDT problem for every Win8 notebook or only specific models? I was thinking of formatting my computer and loading up Win8. Should I just stick with Win7?
  10. So minimum 12V @ 8A = 96W sustainable. If 10A is not sufficient, how much headroom should I aim for? Is there any portable external power adapter that can supply that much current? Do I need a PSU with 5V line as well (how would I know if the expresscard would provide enough power for whatever it supplies)? Is there any pictorial guides of how the modded Xbox PSU looks like? I've seen the schematic but I'm curious to see if people have stripped the Xbox connector and just electrical taped the wires together or what?
  11. Hey @Tech Inferno Fan, do you mind helping me out with the power consumption questions? I've purchased a 650 Ti (94W max) and the PE4L-EC2C 2.1b, but am not sure if I can get away with getting just a 120W 12V@10A PSU. Hope you can shed some light on my previous post whenever you see this. Thanks! http://forum.techinferno.com/diy-e-gpu-projects/2109-diy-egpu-experiences-%5Bversion-2-0%5D-48.html#post35637
  12. Search T420 in the first post of the DIY eGPU experiences. I found 4 references of it. One user has a T420 running a GTX 460 and there are some specific notes regarding your laptop.
  13. Can you explain the power supply demands needed for eGPU? The GTX 650 has maximum draw of 60W, so using a 12V PSU, we need at least 5A. What exactly is the 5V used for? How can you tell if my GPU will have enough power from the 12V rail alone? In your link, is this correct? To power the 6 pin PCIe, there is a 6 pin PCIe to the dual 4 pin molex. Do I connect that to the M-2F molex splitter then that splitter to the floppy molex lead? I can't seem to find a suitable wattage 12V+5V PSU on ebay, maybe I'm not searching for the correct product. From what I've found, I'd have to add either of these products to the 120W PSU (12V @ 10A): 12V 5V AC Adapter Power Supply for Hard Disk Drive Enclosure Black N98B | eBay (5V @ 2A, would I plug this in to the splitter then directly to the 6 pin PCIe power connector?) or the 120W picoPSU (supplies 12V @ 7A + 5V @ 6A) Would that be sufficient power? How much extra should I go above the power requirements in order to have a nice buffer zone? The second product seems to be costlier but provides less clutter (only 1 plug to the wall adapter and 1 external PSU). edit: Today I found a deal and picked up a 650 Ti for the same price as the 650. Techpowerup says has 94W maximum (vs. 64W with the 650), so I guess I'll need that 6 pin PCIe power. What kind of power supply should I look for now? Would 12V @ 8A (96W) not be enough headroom?
  14. Hey Tech Inferno Fan, been thinking a lot during the holiday regarding setting up an eGPU for my W520 (see details in sig) to max out my Starcraft 2 settings on my internal screen with nVidia Optimus. Since I want it as cheap as possible, I was looking into a GTX 650 2GB for around $80 (performs slightly under the regular GTX 460 but at 1/3-1/2 the power at a similar price point), which would be more than sufficient for my purposes (>60 FPS at Extreme settings, which is max settings for everything in SC2). Techpowerup says the max power draw is 50-60W, so I was perusing your previous post (DIY eGPU experiences - Page 30) regarding the HD5750/HD5770 installation using 12V/120W AC adapter. I was thinking $80 (GPU) + $70 (PE4L 2.1b Expresscard w/ EC2C) + $15 (120W universal PSU) would be a pretty good value setup with a very small footprint and low noise/heat/power consumption. Would you recommend any changes to this plan? As for hardware assembly, I see that you connected the barrel end of the PSU to the PE4L input jack and the cable to the expresscard but since the PCIe slot should have enough power (75W), would I even need the floppy molex output (and PCIe to molex adapter and molex splitter)? If so, where do I connect these to? Also, any suggestions on a case/enclosure for this small unit? 15. Limitless? I've never heard of unlimitless
  16. I personally love tablet PCs (or what Lenovo calls convertibles). Not that iPad junk (which should be called slates since they have no dedicated keyboard), but ones with a nice digitizer pen like the Lenovo X230T. I prefer to hand write my notes and draw figures that you just can't do on a regular laptop. My ideal setup if I had the money would be a nice, portable 13.3" tablet PC (the X230T has excellent build quality on par with the top business laptops too) combined with a dock, large monitor, eGPU, and mechanical keyboard and a good gaming mouse. Unfortunately, tablet PCs are still fairly bulky and relatively heavy for their size. Hopefully with the higher focus on ultrabooks, we'll see some thinner and lighter models. Ideally, I'd like to keep that powerful CPU though, so I guess we'll see how they find a balance between the two.
  17. I totally was not thinking about what you guys posted when I read this title. Thinking more like "porn on your laptop" hahaha... My laptop is pretty vanilla. Still pretty new looking Lenovo W520.
  18. Is there a way to archive posts that haven't been commented on for over 6 months or a year?
  19. Don't game too much but I use my standard Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX. Have had several Logitech products before and they have served me well. Unfortunately, my current mouse (after a little over a year) has started to get the "double-click" problem. Searched on the internet and it seems that the metal plate under the left click button has become deformed after constant use. I called their support and after only 15 min, they are sending me a replacement mouse. Hopefully, will get the mouse in a little over a week.
