  1. so far the 680M is the most powerful compatible card you could upgrade to. prema, our resident bios magician is working on a mod to support the new 9xx series gpus in the EM series, although no ETA on that since he seems to be pretty swamped with projects atm. as for cooling mods, the foil tape mod is very recommendable, but also make sure to prop up the back of the machine by using plastic bottle caps for example. that helps improve airflow a lot and thus significantly lowers temps
  2. i think he means that any extra surface layer added to the heatpipes (e.g. to change their visuals) diminishes their ability to efficiently transfer heat? btw chap, of course im aware that there are faster cpus out there than the 4710HQ, but the point is that a current(!) quadcore cpu with hyperthreading running at 3.5 ghz boost clocks will already show bottleneck signs in some games when paired with the 980M on max settings (head over to NBR and check HTWingnuts recent reviews for details), so in order to have some headroom for a potential nextgen gpu upgrade it sure is good to have some extra cpu power under the hood, that not just 5-10% over the current "minimum" (that being the 4710HQ in this case), but rather 30%+
  3. right, but even in 2014, the question still stands: whats the practical application of being able to run a system on performance mode / overclocked for, say, 30-50 minutes? cuz thats exactly how much ull get out of any highend laptop these days... and no matter the year it is, itll still wear ur battery down waaaaaay too fast...
  4. you send your machine to prema and hope for the best
  5. "next to none" compared to "dont do it!" with a side dish of "fried battery, anyone"? no but seriously, i dont recommend either gaming let alone overclocking running on battery, thats just bad for your system...
  6. mmmmm thats not quite correct. as far as i know intel XTU functionality is only given on specific models, e.g. the 15 inch models usually have to be unlocked with XM cpus, whereas the 17 inchers have native overclocking capabilities (correct me if im wrong please) in any case, im not really worried about oc ability, even if we dont have this option at stock, prema will definitely make it possible for us aint that right buddy? as for cpu delidding, im also gonna head down that road in all probability. i dont think its necessary to discard the IHS though, it should suffice to just swap the crappy stock Intel TIM with liquid ultra, re-install the IHS and then overclock away desktop GPU in a laptop, phsew... well theoretically it would be possible, seeing as SLI machines are capable of cooling 200W of GPU power on the other hand, its nice to have a future-proof desktop cpu that gives u enough headroom for future gens of GPUs to stretch their legs. pretty important if u ask me, especially considering that the 4710HQ has already been reported to be bottlenecking the 980M in some games.
  7. in that case why not go all out and come up with a 19-21 inch display monster?
  8. have u checked if something (or maybe you) accidentally presses the power button when closing the lid, causing the machine to power right up again?
  9. true, but its a total hassle to flash each clock setting via vbios and then test it for stability
  10. mmm yes and no. on one hand ull theoretically be able to reach a higher clock when undervolting due to a larger headroom with the TDP limits, in reality though ur maximum available clock will also be limited by the undervolt. basically more volts = higher attainable max. clock but since ur 4710MQ is limited to +200 Mhz overclock anyways, it might actually be a good step to undervolt it as long as it can reach that oc stably concerning ur turbo boost issue: have u tinkered around with tools such as throttlestop or maybe set a wrong value in intel xtu? if everything looks fine, try and revert back to stock values and see if your cpu behaves normally then. another thing to try: enter control panel and hardware list, remove your CPU and reboot. cheers
  11. use intel xtu for cpu oc and nvidia inspector for gpu oc, settings and GUI are pretty self-explanatory
  12. prema, ure slowly turning out to be a necromancer, letting the dead rise from their graves and continue to fight the newest games! good job my friend
  13. this looks familiar...
  14. yes, thats exactly what i meant by "delidding" remove the heatspreader and exchange the TIM between CPU die and the spreader, that will certainly help!
  15. ohno, thats not good news from the korean clevo resellers.... seems like delidding and exchanging the IHS TIM to liquid pro/ultra is becoming a must now btw, nice rant fox!
  16. no worries, not interested in such a monster anyways just waiting impatiently for the zm series!
  17. im guessing a dual-gpu flagship with x99 chipset and desktop extreme cpu compatibility will be available sometime in spring at least it wouldnt surprise me u dont have to go with the iris pro, depends which cpu model u go for...
  18. that would be some serious performance boost for such a "dated" machine
  19. both P6xx series and P7xx series models have 4 ram slots
  20. hey there, im actually waiting for the xmg u505 which is based on the clevo p751zm, u should wait for that! probable eta at schenker is middle of december. sports desktop cpu, compatibility with broadwell desktop cpus, z97 chipset, single mxm gpu and very stylish design at a form factor thats actually thinner than the current p150 series check out premas thread here "imagine new clevo models" or take a look over at NBR where us ZM-candidates also have our own lil thread in the clevo section to discuss this nice upcoming machine cheers
  21. have u tried going back to the intel xtu version uve used originally?
  22. aaaand you could overclock your display refresh rate
  23. ETA for 15" ZM is mid December, but no word yet on the 17" versions...
  24. hmmm makes sense what ure saying clyde. so would it be better to put the fans in between the two heatsinks and just connect the fins rather than the heatsinks/heatpipes?
