If you buy an AMD card, you will need to buy a 5870M heatsink AND make small modifications to it with a rotary tool (Dremel). If you buy an Nvidia card, you will need to either modify the 560M heatsink completely OR buy a 570/580M heatsink. The 150W power supply is sufficient for every upgrade except for the 570M over-volted and the 580M.
People in Europe seem to have a much easier time finding spare MSI parts than in North America (GPU heatsinks).
If you want maximum performance, @debianik nailed it in his posts. The 7970M without Enduro vBIOS + 28xxQM CPU (with ThrottleStop) are the best possible upgrades for this notebook.

Hi. Does anyone have 680m?
Won't work in the GT683.
-
Well the dots/lines aren't on the BSOD screen or probably on BIOS which is good (GPU isn't on its last leg).
Boot into safe mode. Are the dots/lines still there? If not, try reformatting and/or reinstalling drivers.

91-92*C sounds good for 3.0Ghz on all four cores.
-
670M = 570M = Fermi = non-Optimus. It works. People have even flashed their 570M's into 670M's for kicks.

@Xonar I'm using it on a CM pad, don't know the exact model. With or without the fans turned on (coolerpad fans) there is a VERY small time difference, when the cpu will hit 100*C. I play only Bf3 and GW2 and in both of them if I do not limit the cpu to 3ghz (max 91-92*C) it will throttle every couple of minutes. Guess there is no much I can do to cool it down even further.
Do you have your power limits unlocked and I'm assuming you are using TS? If so, limit the CPU to x31 or x30 multiplier and see if the 100-200mhz downclock makes a difference.

IIRC, Vengence don't have XMP profiles.

@myxcon, I'm rocking a 2920XM (the ES has higher turbo bins for whatever reason) running at 3.2Ghz w/ BCLK overclocked. I'll hit 100*C in games as well, but I've noticed that it happens mostly when I play on hard wood surfaces. Wood just absorbs all the heat and makes it toasty as hell. If you can prop up the notebook to give it a couple of inches of airflow, see if that helps.

Also i'd like to know about this bios - will it be possible to set my memory in 1600 mode after unlocking the bios??? On the INTEL site is said that the 2670qm sandy bridge CPU only supports max 1333 Mhz memory. But i saw meny people on such forums who have notebooks with 2670qm and 1600 or quicker memory. Some people say that such memory frequences are only able due to unlocked bios and the CPU actually still works on 1333. I would be very happy if it turns out that all the same it can operate at higher frequencies than 1333!!!!
So what is the truth?
Yes, you need XMP compatible RAM to use XMP. Otherwise, PnP HyperX sticks are hassle-free and work out of the box.
The unlocked bios for the gx740 is a couple of versions above my current BIOS.Does anyone know where MSI hides its BIOS change logs?
It's a mystery.
Could the unlocked GX60 BIOS here be used with AHCI mode or is it RAID mode only?I am pretty new to BIOS unlocks, sorry if it seems like a dumb question.
I have one more question, is the unlocked GX60 BIOS compatible with systems using the E16FKAMS.508 BIOS?Is there a way for me to downgrade to the 305 BIOS provided in this unlock thread?
Thanks!
IDE/AHCI/RAID. You choose whichever you want. As long as you have a GX60 or 16FK you are fine.
hey again,i downloaded the zip file for the gx740 bios but it only contains the .rom file and not the afudos and upadate.bat like the tutorial says.
i usually flash my bios by using DOS 98 USB drive and by typing the .bat file-name
how am i suppose to flash the bios with the .rom?
Thank you
When you type flash(.bat), some text should pop up asking if you are sure you wish to continue. Pressing any key other than Ctrl+C will prompt the flash process.
Sorry for my english... I'm new user...if i understand... i can unlock additional features in my bios? i've gt680... thanksAll GT680 features are unlocked in my link.
I am planning to install Gtx 680m 2gb in my MSI GT683R. Is it going to work with Official BIOS or I need to flash unlocked one?? Or it does not matter witch BIOS to use for NEW video card PCI express 3.0??680M will not work in GT683. Optimus incompatibility.
Anyone can help me,after i updated my bios to unlocked version,my laptop is gt683r,everything is ok!so after thatI do some changing of settings, like the XMP i put in profile 1 and memory in1600mhz, my memory is only 1333mhz
When i save the changes and booted it only gives black screeni already done removing the Cmos battery lead but
Still the same problem, hope somebody can help me,
Thanks in advance
Sorry for that i didnt see it coz im very anxious to fix this problem i post it immediately!thanks....im going to buyRam with 1600Mhz to fix it!thanks again
Same problem with Simonious007, i already tried resetting CMOS and force bios using usb flash disk and i alsoReplace my memory with 8Gb with 1600Mhz on my msi gt683r still no luck, anyone can help me?
Your memory needs to have XMP profiles for that to work. If you get black screen, you don't have XMP profiles. Just buy HyperX PnP sticks if you are unsure.
A CMOS reset should be more than enough for your issue. I've even done it by setting XMP profiles on my PnP sticks.

@Xonar. GE-series have 1 mSATA and 1 SATA which both work at 6GB speed. It would be great if RAID would be supported though I don't know if RAID Option ROM is in this BIOS at all. But I know where you can find it:p
Also XMP support would be awesome and other stuff for overclocking unlocked processors.
Again I assume it is possible to do 2 mods with 1 image: Xonar's unlock and svl7's vBIOS mod:D
BTW. Is there only ES 3720QM unlocked or other OEM 38X0QM and 37X0QM processors are unlocked too?
I haven't kept up with Ivy Bridge unlocked chips, so I'm not too sure.
Hi, I have the MSI GT780DX and processor i7 2720QM ES (i7 2910XM) whether the fit MSI GT783 Unlocked.zip to my laptop? And there was a way to open to adjust CPU multiplier?
I know that in GT70 unlocked multiplier adjustable, but unfortunately it does not fit my laptop.
Sorry for my english I'm from Russia
Sandy Bridge MSI cannot adjust CPU multi. Only Ivy can.
I have the 16F2, are there changelogs anywhere for the different bioses available for it?MSI does not release changelogs for whitebook BIOS. Sometimes a dev in the MSI forum will release the changelogs, but that's rare.
Hi everybody,im not able to download and test it yet but after flashing with the custom version of Xonar do you think it will be possible to start and SSD
drive in AHCI mode after several bios found on the net only IDE mode seems to work
MSI: GX740 - MS1727
Bios Info:
BIOS BUILD E1727MS.10F 05/27/2011 (seems to be the last update maybe i'm wrong)
EC BUILD 1727EMS1.404 12/15/2009
Thank you for your moment.
No clue, have you tried it yet? I've never heard of this problem.
hellow everybody) I'm gonna try the unlocked bios. But i doubt will it help me.My laptop is gt783 with 2670qm on board and its performance in gta 4 seems terrible to me. Memory is stock 12GB 1333. I like this game and I hope it's сaused by CPU underutilization. It's frequency reaches max 2,89 Ghz during the game and throttling is often. And i think that stopping the THROTTLING will help me. Does anybody know - am I right???
Thank for any reply)!!
Yes, the unlocked BIOS will help alot.
1. Flash unlocked BIOS
2. Increase power limits to maximum durations and power draw
3. Download Throttlestop and set the CPU multiplier to the Max Turbo
4. Watch temps as your CPU will try to stay at max turbo for as long as the temps allow it to

Well, I was responding to how fast it heated up, rather than the final temperature. My 6990M will hit 95*C in 10-15min in BF3 (I did a shoddy job modding the heatsink), but I'm not actually worried as the temps plateau at that level.
Ideally with the 580M/675M you should be looking at mid 80*'s tops in that notebook. Lowest I've ever seen is 79*C with a fresh repaste. But 90*C is not too hot, but it is approaching that danger threshold. 100W cards really push it in such a small chassis & single fan.
I'd say repaste whenever you have time. Even if you bought it from a reseller (Xotic, PNB, etc etc) they come from the same warehouse in the end. If the fan speeds bother you a lot there's programs out there that let you edit your EC config and choose the RPM of the fan (you can then test the best results for your ears and GPU). I caution you though to not lower it by much because the fan is truly a workhorse in this notebook.
Also, 18'' (with 3 fans) vs 15.6'' comparison . No fair!

So what's the best Sandy Bridge CPU supported? any?
2860QM / 2960XM if you're loaded. But as I've said, don't expect multiplier OC'ing on this notebook.
-
But why we can not use GTX680m in MSI GT683?? I can not find any answer all over the internet((
Is it matter of BIOS?
Partially BIOS support. It's a matter of not having Optimus. You get AMD support instead though.
-
Not trying to threadjack, but what would be the fastest GPU to put in without modding the heat sink? I had to take mine apart to reapply the thermal paste and realized it would be easy to swap GPU's (and even CPU's)
Nothing. The 560m heatsink only works with the 560m. You'll need to buy a new heatsink at the very least if you are upgrading. If you want an AMD card you'll need to either buy a new heatsink and modify or modify an existing one.
-
90*C in 20 minutes is not worrisome. That's pretty normal for a demanding card (and Fermi). Replacing thermal paste will yield the best results.
-
Been really busy the last couple of weeks. gimmi a couple days to go through all that I've missed.
-
No guarantees with the QS -- MSI and Clevo 680M (4GB) GTX are confirmed to work.

580M's work with the GT683; I know this for a fact because the laptop will throttle when the 580M GTX is pushed to the limits. Throttlestop or soldering a wire to the MXM slot are your two solutions for this problem.
-
Correct @trigger25sg. The downside to the new Ivy Bridge MSI's is the lack of AMD support because of the inclusion of Optimus. The upside is, well, you can have the best GPU in your notebook (680M) .
-
AFAIK -- the recovery methods don't always work because they rely on the bootblock not being corrupted. If your flash went through and rewrote the bootblock then this is typically the end result.

@Mr.Toolbox True -- Sandy Bridge MSI's don't have Optimus, so high-end Fermi is as good as it gets with Nvidia. Best upgrade for GT683 is 7970m with a modified heatsink.
@Fedexultra I remember seeing that somewhere... haha, oh wait that was me! Good quote though.

No need for modifications, just some more thermal pads to cover extra vRAM, etc.

MSI G-Series Unlocked BIOS
in MSI
Posted
1. CMOS should be in the same location as the pictures on the second post.
2. RAM is reserved by the Operating System for caching purposes. It's to get better performance, this is normal with Windows 7, 8.
3. No clue, you could add the -x parameter to the .bat file to force flash, but it's your risk. Others have flashed the BIOS just fine without it.
