I have no idea what im doing here here (HELP)

Recommended Posts

So basically, I wanted to find a way to play games without lagging everywhere and the only thing that is bad on my laptop is the graphics card, so somehow I stumbled into this eGPU page and hopefully someone can help me basically understand how all of this works or at least attempt to help me out. So I have an Dell Inspiron 17 7000 series and ill basically copy and paste the processor if that is relevant information. The processor is a Intel(R) core(TM) i5-5200U CPU @ 2.20GHz so I have no idea what most of this means because when it comes to laptops and modification I am just completely clueless. I was just hoping to get an answer from someone if I could even have a eGPU setup and what it would cost me for that and if it is even worth doing. I know this is where people who know everything about this stuff, but I am just really interested to see if I could actually just upgrade graphics cards without buying a brand new computer, and hopefully somebody can help a clueless man. Thank you for reading and replying if you choose to.

Stores like Best Buy exist because of and for people like you.

If you don't even know how electricity works, this is not the forum for you. This place is for enthusiasts who know what they're doing.

TLDR: Just buy another PC. It saves everyone the hassle.

The above is a little harsh. The eGPU area is definitely something where you do need a significant computer background, but that doesn't mean you can't learn. If you're interested in spending the time learning below is a great summary thread:

The details in the above thread are a bit outdated (the GPU recommendations are outdated and thunderbolt is faster than 1.2opt), but the concepts still apply. If you want to take the time to learn this stuff start there and branch out. If not then it would be best to just buy a new system.

Sorry for this. Arbystirder was just so impressed about how cool he is that he forgot his manners... What he really wanted to say was: "Hi threre! Nice to have you around! How can I help you!" (As this is how a pro would act.)

Now for your problem:

1.) What kind of games do you want to play? Are they very demanding? Can you name some titles? Those questions are important as any games will run on your CPU but some more recent games will not work with only 2 CPU Cores. So before planing/investing on an eGPU you should ask yourself if your CPU can handle the games you want to play. If this check is positve you should think about an eGPU solution.

2.) As those eGPU solutions in general require a special interface, you should then check if your notebook features this very interface. The thread Khenglish posted should be of some help in this regard. I found this article very heplful: http://www.pcworld.com/article/2984716/laptop-computers/how-to-transform-your-laptop-into-a-gaming-powerhouse-with-an-external-graphics-card.html

And perhaps this vid might be a helpfull addition:

If you are not the DIY kind fo guy, there might be some premade solutions comming up:

Best regards

Thank you khenglish and phila_delphia. The info you posted answered most of my questions.  My fear is that my y580 would have a whitelist issue with the mPCI despite the fact that the guy in the first video is using the same model. I will definitely have to give this more thought.

      Hi there guys,

I've been looking into getting a new GPU for my laptop (4-lane PCI-e) and enclosure (HP Omen Enclosure) but I cannot decided between the RX 5700 XT and the RTX 2070 (non SUPER).

I did some price to performance calculations (higher is better) with some of the best prices I can currently get in the UK.

The RX 5700 XT does perform better and is cheaper than the RTX 2070 (Although the 2070 does come with 2 games) but my main concern is drivers and from what I've heard NVIDIA cards work a lot better with eGPUs than AMD.

If anyone has experience using both red & green or if anyone else has any other input i'd love to hear your experiences and input.

      Thanks.

Hi guys, bit of a rookie to the whole EGPU scene. Currently I have:

      - MacBook Pro 2015 13inch (3.1GHz Core i7 16GB RAM)
      - Razer X Core
      - Apple TB3 to TB2 Adapter
      -  TB2 Cable (Cable Matters)
      - 23inch AOC External Monitor

I am wonder about what graphics card to get to run X-Plane11 with high graphic settings?
I have purgewrangler set up and ready to use with an AMD graphics card, but am also open to the idea of an Nvidia graphics card.
Any advice appreciated. I did not buy a Windows PC as I need a Mac for various other things and wanted an all-in-one laptop.

The GPU works, The PSU works, The system works. [individually they all do work]

The system works perfectly fine without the WLAN card.

When i put the system to sleep and hotswap the mPCIe riser and WLAN press something on the keyboard.. Restarts.
Will shutdown in roughly 27 seconds for those 27 seconds it works just fine like how it normally would on external monitor.

When i shut it down and plug the riser and switch it on, same story. 27 seconds.

I don't even see a error. I get to login screen directly. I used DDU already.

I timed it. no matter what i do if i use the eGPU, External monitor it restarts instead of pause-play. I have 27 seconds.

      Need help!

      Hello Everyone!

I have problem with VBIOS/EEPROM(?) after installing of a GTX1060 N17E-G1-A1 GPU NVIDIA Graphics Chipset (old one has temp. damages).

I  modified new 416  and old 391 nvmii.inf file and try to install drivers, but every combination gave me no success. There is only yellow triangle in  Windows Device Manager :|
Is there a way to bring my card to life?

Hey guys, I am Grga and i am new here. I rarely use forums but i am desperate in this case.
So, as i have seen many of you have had the issue with obsolete BIOS versions for clevo P7xxZM machines,
So i would like to hear your experiences and how you went about it.
I have recently bought an ssd Samsung 970 PRO NVMe M.2. From which i would like to boot the windows10.
Little did i know that there was no support for that kind of protocol in the BIOS or that there is such thing as UEFI (for which i am still not sure what that is exactly, except some kind of successor of BIOS).
So i did a bit of research and updated my Bios and ec to 1.03.15 and 1.03.09 respectively for which i understand is the last available official release. I changed to uefi mode with secure boot disabled etc... in short i did everything that my (limited) knowledge about these things allowed me to do (and the sweat of excitement and fear when i was flashing the bios for the first time in my life). But, alas, it all yielded no success,  and now i am lost. I have really no idea what to do, and whom to ask for help except for you guys here. The only thing that i understand worked for some of you is when you mentioned a wizard named @Prema so therefore i will try to do the same....
