gt90
Hello all, I'm the excited new owner of a secondhand M18xR1. Should have it in a few days. Specs as follows: i7 2670qm (have a 2920XM on the way) dual HD6990M's and 4 gigs of ram with a 500gb HDD (have a Samsung 830 SSD to go in. I have read extensively on the heat issues with this model so the first thing I'll be doing is checking to see if Bios A05 is installed. Is there anything else I should know about it? What Ram would be best in this? I've read that it can take 1866mhz but specs say 1600mhz. Would I notice much difference with the 1866 over the 1600? And I'm thinking of installing Win8 on it. Anyone have experience with that? good or bad idea?So excited to get this lappy, and be part of this forum!GT90
Prodigal
Welcome to the forum!I have 16GB of 1866mhz RAM in my R1 - I honestly doubt you'd notice a difference in the two when you're using it, but it was worth it to me to pay more to get what was at the time the fastest I could put in.I just upgraded from dual 6990s to 780s, but I will say my 6990s were doing great on the games I was playing (Battlefield 4, Bioshock Infinite, FFXIV being the most demanding I was playing - some Metro 2033 as well but not as much). Just felt like it was time to go for the upgrade.
wheth4400
Congrats on the new laptop! As far as the RAM goes I do believe 1866MHZ is the max speed of supported RAM, but honestly out side on benching you won't notice the difference between 1600MHZ and 1866MHZ RAM. As far as Win 8 goes that is a personal decision that is up to you. A lot of people strongly feel adversely towards WIN 8, while others are happy with it. sunster168
Congrats on your new, well you get what I mean, Alienware M18x R1. That's one sick, meaning awesome gamer to have. I guess the ram frequency won't be noticeable by us in terms of a real world performance that we can feel. But it'll make a difference on benchmarks and programs that will benefit from the increase by just a little bit. I'm sure everybody here is very happy for you!b:look_down:. Digimortal
Where did you purchase the 780's to replace the initial 6990m's from? Would you recommend this to myself with an old M18x R1? I've been plagued by having to use modified drivers to be able to squeeze performance and issues out of modern games, if this would fix this issue I'd love to know.
