      After a long wait, Tech|Inferno now has a Marketplace/Classifieds section where all registered (promoted and above) members can participate in selling, trading and seeking out items. This service is free to all members to use as they wish. Currently all ads last for a period of 14 days before they expire for promoted users.   1. Hey guys, I built my eGPU setup with an Akitio thunder 2 and a Zotac gtx 970 a few weeks ago. It worked pretty well, but the fans of the eGPU doesn't change speed, neither under high usage... I heard about zotac firestorm and other drivers that can control the fan´s speed, but I want to keep OS X and don't want to change to windows... So I opened the case checked with a multimeter how high or low the voltage of the fans are, but somehow I touched with both poles of the fans and the whole setup shut down. I rebooted it and the eGPU worked fine, but the fans doesn't move ant all... I disconnected them and powered them separately and they spin! That means that it could only be a software problem. I hope you can help me Severin
  2. Hi all, As anyone using nVidia cards with OSX will know, we're limited to the 900 series cards, whether they be in eGPU's, Mac Pro or Hackintosh. Of course there is the AMD option for cards, but they simply don't meet up to any expectation I have of a card comparable to nVidia's hardware. All of my diggings has shown people saying to wait for nVidia to release webdrivers for OSX and that's going back nearly 8 months now. Honestly, I severely dislike Windows as an operating platform, and have miles of trouble getting my eGPU to work with it on my MacBook Pro. But, in lieu of Pascal support for the newer 1000 series cards, I WILL eventually switch over. I know lobbying to Apple is a dead cause, because, well, it's Apple, but I've started a petition to try and gather support for convincing nVidia to write webdrivers for 1000 series cards for OSX.   3. Hi there, lots of useful info on here! Still I need to ask a few questions as my setup isn't quite working! I've a 2012 rMBP on El Capitan 10.11.2 and I used the automate_eGPU.sh script to quickly sort out the modification of files and installation of NVIDIA web drivers. I'm testing it with an NVIDIA GTS450 which is connected via a Sonnet Echo Pro and PE4C 3.0. SW1 is set to 2 (PERST# delay 9.8sec), SW2 to 1 (CLK no delay). It's picked up fine in OS X and I can drive an external monitor with it no problem. However, it doesn't appear to be doing any rendering - all the legwork is still being done by the internal GT650M!!! It shows each screen as being driven by the GT650M in About This Mac, and testing with games seems to corroborate this. What gives? I can't find any examples online of other people who've had this problem (at least in OS X). The GTS450 is correctly identified in System Information. A second question... I know there isn't a way to get the output on the internal LCD on Windows on this Macbook due to it having a dGPU and Apple's rubbish firmware, but is that the case in OS X? The Intel HD4000 is accessible there, does that mean I could funnel the graphics back to the internal LCD or is it just impossible on all counts?
  4. Hi, After many failures here is my little contribution to this forum. This guide will be updated if I find anything new. Any question, just ask. Hardware: Macbook Pro Retina Mid 2012 (thunderbolt 1) EVGA GTX 970 Akitio box MODED AKITIO BOARD for power soldered on PCB MODED AKITIO BOARD with additional capacitors DELL DA2 PSU + MODED PCIE CABLES BenQ Monitor on HDMI Softwares: OSX 10.11.2 Windows 10 pro (Bootcamp BIOS) WebDriver: latest Cuda Drivers: latest OSX INSTALLATION: There is a script that automates the whole thing that can be found here , it worked wonderfully on my vanilla 10.11, easy as cake !! Thanks a milion @goalque For manual installation follow the video below to the letter: Stability Comments: OS X Stable Windows stable Restarting is quick (apple logo straight away) but starting the computer after a power OFF takes a good 30 sec more to get to the apple logo. Issue with safari not wanting to play netflix somehow; issue with HDCP handshake somehow, works fine with chrome. Installing Windows 10 (BIOS) (I hate windows :s ) I installed windows 10 via bootcamp, purchased EGPU setup and used the 1.2 version. I don't remember exactly how the EGPU appeared in the system infos but I think it was recognised as Nvidia gtx 970 straight away. so after you have installed the latest Nvidia drivers for your eGpu it is time to get the eGpu software running: Unzip EGPUsetup 1.2 to c:\eGpu run setup-disk-image Restart and load eGpu Setup 1.2, select option 2 Do PCI compaction all exept sata and make sure you have PCI WRITE and ALL ALLOC showing yes Optional: If freeze at the bootloader: edit PCI.BAT replacing a:x.x and b:x.x with 0a:x.x and 0b:x.x (I only found A occurences in mine) (in the editor alt/option+F to access the file menu) Optional: If the settings are not kept after reboot: edit Startup.bat by adding REM in front of all "call vidinit" like so: REM call vidinit... (in the editor alt/option+F to access the file menu) Run test startup.bat Run bootloader Select eGpu setup 1.2 again and now select option 1 If everything goes well you just have to do the last step every time you want to boot into windows with the eGpu Maybe there is a way to automate the last step but yet to find out.   5. I've been sitting on this build for a while, meaning to make a build log but its been so long I've forgotten most of it! So here's the short and sweet version! My previous build with this card was a water-cooled wall mounted windows gaming machine. This was a great rig for a former student just having started a new job with still a fair bit of time on his hands... Then things got busy, and the water beast became stagnant. Long story short, I converted to mac mostly due to requiring portability yet still wanting a powerful machine that wasn't a total door stop to carry around. So it became that a GTX 970 soon found its way on my book shelf in a nice compact case. Just for kicks, heres my old rig! Firstly, why did i drop the water-cooling? The original plan was to make a similar wall mounted eGPU. After some pondering I came to the conclusion that this particular card I owned wasn't much of an overclocker. I hadn't actually bothered unlocking the card or overclocking it a whole lot. I had planned to do it, but it had never happened. For 5 months I had used the card running on stock power and it was still maxing out games on my 2560x1080 ultra wide. I went ahead a bought the Akitio thunder 2 off a german website, delivered to the UK within two days for a very good price! I initially used a 120W 12V power brick to run the card, clearly this didn't cut it, and the card would die instantly on load. I resorted to grabbing a Dell DA2 18A power brick and things started working great! This post by dschjin inspired me to try the noctua fans with the stock heatsink. To my surprise they worked very well and I was getting great temps under load. I could even hold my previous water-cooled overclock and it would hang around 75 degrees C. I then proceeded to create a funky case cooling design, and two days of drilling later I ended up with this! It looked great! But it was an awful cooling solution... absolutely useless, wouldn't even hold stock settings before throttling... I then decided to cut out the entire side and top panel with the idea of finding a grill/mesh material to put in its place. I ended up going with a desktop wire magazine holder like this one: Here it is cut out I then cut it to size and slid it between the fans and the edge of the aluminium case. Its all very much a tight fit and required a lot of effort to close while keeping everything in place. I used some PCIe power extenders that plugged on the top of the card as two six pin power. They required trimming of the plastic and heat shrink to get the clearance: As you can see the sharp inside of the aluminium enclosure already mangled the nice new heat shrink! The fans are also just about held in place with some bits of plastic. Due to the design of the heatsink, the fans couldn't be sat flush without having to cut some metal tabs and bending things. the way it is now lets the fans sit tight between the mesh and the heatsink. Once the case is closed, nothing can move. I then added a power switch with LED (switch contacts go on the dell PSU and led goes to the existing led pins on the Akitio motherboard. chopped up 24pin ate connector is in there as a total bodge job. The wires are breaded in pairs and simply pass through the vent holes of the card. Too easy! The wires are stiff enough that it doesn't really matter anyway. Finally, here are a few of my favourite things! Electrical tape to cover up sharp edges of steel. 3M VHB tape can stick anything to anything like foam tape! Then come off like it was never there. I swear by this stuff! sharpie to coverup dings and dents Wago wire to wire clamps, these things are quicker and much more reliable than terminal blocks if you're too lazy to solder wires together. Like me! stick on foam to space out bits of floating mesh grill and make a snug fit mains powered dremel with EZ click metal cutting disk. This thing makes short work of thick aluminium. And don't forget boys and girls, always wear protection! Software woes Lets just say the hardware was the easy bit.. I started out with a bootcamp of Windows 10 and the card would just about start. It seemed very unreliable, sometimes it would work everytime, then I'd get home one day and the thing just didn't want to start.. Optimus made everything worse, though it was great when it worked. I ended up going to several installs of windows 10 and 8.1, even a UEFI rebuild.. Finally I gave in a resorted to OSX drivers. Automate GPU is fantastic and it just works. I've been very surprised how well most of my steam library works on OSX. I had a nice surprise the other day when I found out Thief was available for OSX and that sold it to me. I got rid of my windows partition and all my gaming is done in OSX now. Overall this seems to be a great solution for portable computing and still having the ability to run desktop graphics. I've been very surprised and look forward to Thunderbolt 3 where this should be natively supported!   6. Morning, Chaps! I would like to build a mobile case, which will provide OSX with CUDA computing power (for this software: https://github.com/pg-strom/devel). Unfortunately, the mobile chips (680M/750M) aren't capable enough. I have a 980Ti, which works fine under Ubuntu. Ideally, I'd like to be able to reuse this particular card (it's a Windforce 980 Ti by Gigabyte). I do not care about gaming or any other software, I just need CUDA to be able to use it when connected. It would be used with rMBP (750M) and iMac 5k (R9). 1. Is this something that can be done? 2. Would it require changes to OSX? 3. Could you recommend a case, that can house both the card and the PSU? 4. Would I have to plug some display into the GPU in order for CUDA to work? Thanks!
  7. Hello everyone, After much searching I can't seem to find a fix to this. I just completely my eGPU set-up with a 780 Ti and an Akitio case for use with Octane in Cinema 4D. Everything is recognized and working well, drivers are up to date, and I am able to render using the Octane plugin. My issue is that the fan speed does not change under load. I checked the card in my PC and it runs perfectly fine, temps are great. Is there a way to set a fan curve from within OSX or is my only option to install Windows? I plan on adding an H80i water cooler eventually, is that how others are bypassing this issue? To have an aftermarket cooler running off of the PSU?
  8. Hi, how can I control the fan speed of my GPU under OSX? At the moment my GTX 970 is always running on the same fan speed. Is this normal? How can I monitor my temperature under OS X? Under Windows the fan speed changes automatically. Thanks a lot for your help guys!
  9. Hey Guys.. It may Sound Stupid or Crazy to Install Mac OSX and Ubuntu on an Alienware.. But I Want to .. I dont have any Experience with VirtualBox. but i have seen ppl running MAC OSX and UBUNTU at the same time via Virtual Box.. i need a Someone who can Guide me through the Process.. if you have some Tutorial Specifically for this Purpose than please post the link.. All The Advice and Suggestion and Comments are appreciated
