This is pretty awesome. With this tool my 660m gets maximum 68 degrees hot and my CPU 70 degrees celcius, under FULL load!
And you all must now that my 3630QM runs at 3,2GHz with throttlestop, on all cores and my 660m on 1200MHz (core) and 2800MHz on memory...
No throttling on my Y580, just full clocks and nice temperatures
Thank you for this!
Edit: you should change the title of this thread. because it really seems like IdeaFan is working for every multimedia-lenovo-notebook so happy about this, ty again
2. Edit: @allstone Maybe this could help you for more improvements in future http://forum.techinferno.com/lenovo-ibm/3849-y580-fan-control-2.html#post87843

@schranzmaster: Can you tell what thickness are the thermal pads you used?
Btw: Does anyone have experience with this coollaboratory liquid metalpads, could these be used instead of thermal paste on cpu/gpu and instead of thermal pads?
I used 0,5 mm pads for the backplate of the GPU and for the other parts i used 1 mm.
Sorry, i never tried these metalpads

did you just attach heatsinks to the fan? any particular order, or....? how did you get them to stay? what were temps before you modded with the copper heatsinks? and does it push against anything once you reassemble? thanks in advance!
At first i used some Tesa tape to test where I can place the copper-heatsinks. As you can see on the picture, this are the parts where the heatsinks fit in the laptop without pushing against anything when reassembled.
I get them stay at its place with ''Arctic Silver Alumina Thermal Adhesive''... It worked great so far. I created this mod to use the laptop without the back cover and a cooling pad under it... Thats why the small holes in the plastic you can see on the second picture. (I used a small drill for that)
You can see my temps before that mod in my first post of this thread
My temperature-Information is always when running the Y580 at full load on GPU and CPU.
When i play less demanding games like League of Legends, the temparature of the GPU stays at 63°C and the CPU at 74°C maximum. I think that is a pretty good result, if you take a look at my overclock (and CPU clock, btw)

nice! i was looking for that. after doing some cleaning, and changing the thermal paste, my maximum temps got loweranyway, i still think 580's cooling scheme is pretty bad
i had to use an cooling pad otherwise all my games gets low fps
Thank You!
Yes i also think that the cooling scheme isnt good designed... Thats why I wanted to do this A third heatpipe would be still nice

it seems like the 860m of the Y50 is based on Maxwell architecture, that means it should have a good overclocking potential, (if the temperatures are good)
just found some nice benchmarks on this link http://forum.notebookreview.com/gaming-software-graphics-cards/751352-860m-beast.html

Shranz, did you only purchase one of each sheet? I can't remember how big of an area I will have to cover. Just want to make sure I get them all in one purchase. thanks!
I'm looking at these:
Yes, this size should last your Y580.

I go to the gym three times per week and go often jogging/biking:bananalama:

So you applied the pads on the backside of the motherboard right? The gpu and cpu cores have paste on them?
Mine did, and i didn't have pads so i just re greased with as5 worked ok, but my hdd is still getting scorched.
Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk
Yes, you should change all thermal pads, even the ones on the backside of the motherboard (backplate of the 660m). And yes, thermal paste on the core of the GPU and CPU
For me the HDD doesn't become that hot like before...
-
Thanks alot. Is there any recommended thermal paste application method?
I didn't elapse the paste on the die's with a credit card, like some people do it...
It worked well for me to just apply a single little dot of thermal paste on gpu and cpu and let it spread by the pressure of the heatsinks
-
Schranz, would you care to share where you purchased the pads and which ones you purchased? I'm getting up into the 80s and need to repaste/repad.
Thanks!
Yes of course
I bought ''Softtherm - 86/600 Kerafol 86/600 50 mm x 50 mm 6 W/mK'' with a thickness of 1 mm and 0,5 mm''
(you need 0,5 mm pads for the backplate of the 660m)
I bought them on conrad .de ... But there are better thermal pads out there on internet...
But this ones are working like a charm for me

I opened my Y580 twice and also noticed broken screw slot on the bottom plastic bezel. I probably applied too much force on this screw the last time I was closing my laptop. My advice - do not apply too much pressure on the screws This is not a top quality plastic.
Thats right.
Not the best quality, but really durable if you're a little careful in using it

Hello guys, it's me again.
I just tried again to figure out, which values are for the control of the fan... I noticed that no adjustment made any effect... except for one value. I can turn on/off the automatic fan control... But if I turned it off, the fan just stayed off and I couldn't change anything
except turning the automatic fan control on again
Here is a screenshot of what I found out with RW-Everything
-all red marked values are changing under normal use of the Y580 (I could assign some of them)
-the red marked in the blue bounded values only appear when the battery is plugged in
Maybe somebody has an idea what I could do now?
Any experts concerning the embedded controller?
Is this a type of ''locked EC''? because no changing did take effect expect for the one mentioned above
Edit: informations I found in RW-Everything:

I was planning on eventually getting 3720qm because I know those you can oc because it's not locked. When I went to Windows 8, I noticed a significant performance decrease and all sorts of problems. Everytime my vram would go over ~1 gb, it'd downclock to 405, but I think the vbios had something to do with it. But I can say for sure that it happened less frequently since I came to Windows 7, my nv inspector and nvcp settings were the same. But I think the main issue was there was something wrong with the windows 8 iso file I had and was corrupted because whenever I'd install windows, chipset or hd 4000 drivers it would always hang for like 5 min at dfxapi.dll (i think that's what it was).
About throttlestop, that's strange because the only things I can change in the TPL options are the power limits, enable/disable limit, and clamping limit. Everything else is grey and locked out. In BIOS, all you did was disable the "lock turbo settings" and change 28 to 56 right ? And about the ME firmware, I wasn't really paying attention if it gave me a perf boost because this was when I was doing a fresh windows install and was just trying to get it up and ready asap. I don't think it gave me any huge benefit, but it wouldn't hurt to flash it (i think). && Is there an ASIC Quality type of thing for CPUs?
I think the performance of the 3610QM / 3630QM will last for the next three years
Let's hope that games in the future are more CPU- than GPU-intensive
...Ok i will stay with windows 7
hm.. Yes that are all settings that I changed in the BIOS for the CPU... Are you using throttlestop 6.00?
If not, google it and try it
couldn't find anything about ASIC quality of CPUs... Would be interesting to know
-
Yep,
1.2125 V XDDD I figure if I keep my memory clocks down for my "everyday clocks" and my temps under control then the gpu will last me ~1-2+ years. And by then, I'll probably either get a new laptop or just upgrade CPU and do an eGPU (which has been done successfully on the y580).
3610QM. I run throttlestop as soon as it boots, regardless of what task (e.g. gaming, checking weather, etc etc). I've been using the settings you shared since I first read that post (that is, if you're talking about the short/long power/time limits). I actually went a step further and have my short and long power limits to 60W / 65 W (this is one of many different values I use, but 60W / 65W is most used). In throttlestop, everything is unchecked except for the first three checkboxes. I also disabled C-States, set ASPM to disabled under video -> PCI Express Graphic, disabled BD PROCHOT.
I do wonder why I'm never in the 8000s or even anything higher than 7600 for physics, but I always thought this was just a limitation of the cpu. Looking at some of the results on 3dmark11 for 660m+3610qm, it seems my usual phys score of 7600 is about slightly below average. Since a lot of those benchmarks at the start are mine (most results with ADATA sx300 & 2x 4GB corsair = me), the physics score of most excluding mine I've seen go near 7800 - 8000s.
Do you think this could be a faulty Windows install or maybe related to a driver? When I was using Windows 8, my physics was always near 7300 and when I went back to Windows 7, it jumped back up to "normal." && Since my lastest Windows install, I was a little sloppy and just installed chipset -> restart -> intel hd 4000 -> atheros LAN driver-> restart -> nvidia -> intel MEI -> directx -> some misc applications like chrome, VLC, steam, etc -> restart. I don't use the wifi card so I skipped it entirely, also since then I've done system restore several times. I later learned that this can sometimes mess up drivers..
BTW, what voltage are you running, and what long/short power limits do you use? &&& Did you ever try using intel XTU to control your power limits, or find out how to OC the base clock for ur cpu? I know you have 3630QM which is not the same as 3610QM but I figure the method to OC a 3630QM on a y580 would be the same for 3610QM.
Thats nice. Did you noticed any differnece with the new ME-firmware?
hm.. maybe the cpu quality is also really important?
that thing with your windows installations could also be a factor... but it should be enough to just install the drivers clean..
did you noticed performance gains with windows 8 in games with your Y580?
on GPU I'm running the stock voltage of 1,1V... I didn't touch the voltages of the cpu.. altough I think you can't change the voltage of a 36xxQM...
Yes I tried XTU already.. but i like Throttlestop a lot more thats why I uninstalled XTU...
I'm using 56 W for short and long power limits... Time limit is at ''3670016 s''.. that is the max I can choose in Throttlestop under ''TPL'' after the BIOS-tweaks
but I haven't disabled the C-states and have still full performance I must say
for overclocking the base clock of the cpu you have to make a small modification in the ME-firmware before installing, I read this somewhere here in the forum
I wanted to try this, but stopped it before messing up my laptop... beside this the CPU is bottlenecked by the 660m
... and with all the BIOS-tweaks and throttlestop you can get the maximum power out of your i7!

I guess I overlooked that part XD I did it anyway though. Although, I made a post on here somewhere asking if I should or shouldn't update it and was told it has an influence since it controls clock timings.--Updated--
How come sometimes I get a higher score with lower clocks and vice versa? Does this mean my GPU is being lazy or did something interfere with the benchmark (e.g. background applications, which I shouldn't have many of)?
Examples of 3DMARK11 benchmark runs:
OOOORRRR is this just one of those anomalies that no one knows the exact answer to?
so it worked?
i think thats normal, if i look at your freaking crazy core-clock, it's only 10mhz higher than the first run... so there can be such differences...
so yes, it is ''just one of those anomalies that no one knows the exact answer to''
which voltage are you running?
and what about your cpu? are you running throttlestop? and did you changed the settings in bios that i told?
I ask because i get easily 7900 physics score, sometimes over 8000... and thats with my 3630QM...
A 3610QM can also reach around 7900 with all the tweaks i think..
-
Don't know if anyone knows about this, or if it actually affects performance in any way, but you can update ME firmware using this method for 8.X based firmware: Intel Management Engine: Drivers, Firmware and Tools
This is also the same intel ME version you see in bios. It might be a good idea to update since IME controls some of the clock timers etc.
I will only do this if I'm sure it will work!
would be nice if somebody try's it
EDIT: ''The average MODDER / PERFORMANCE enthusiast does not need to be overly concerned with updating the MEI FIRMWARE / DRIVERS, as this is not as important as to performance as the RAID OROM's, Storage drivers, and other hardware based OROM's inside the BIOS.''

"Used by Intel® ME as either SUSWARN# in Deep Sx state
supported platforms or as SUSPWRDNACK in non Deep
Sx state supported platforms"
Deep SX State: Not 100% sure but has something to do with the ACPI
ah ok thanks

I'm definately flashing this ASAP, but when you say you adjusted the voltage to 1.1 V, was that a typo? Default is 1.1
Thanks!
Yes, it's 1,1V.... I tweaked it to ''steady'' 1,1V, because before that it throttled the voltage down to 1,05 or something... that caused clock-instability
-
You could try the BIOS that I use. I modded the vBIOS of svl7's unlocked bios to 1,2GHz core and 2,8GHz memory clock. I also tweaked the voltage, it stays always at 1,1V, so that the 660m can handle the 1,2GHz stable all the time. The last tweak is that the clocks of the 660m won't throttle. so beware of the temperatures.
Try it out!
For me it solved the problem with throttling in Crysis 3.
But before flashing you should reset your overclock!
You can add your +150Mhz later after trying

Had to use another tool from another forum to unlock overclocking in "Intel ME"
Place attached file on root of bootable usb key and type the following command without quotes "me_port.com"
Here is the file - https://www.dropbox.com/s/spmvxmz9pal1j6l/ME_Port.com
Take a look and see if you can see what it is doing ? Took two seconds for me and reboot...
will this work for the Y580? (got also the 3630QM)
-
wanted to see if I could "unlock" the vbios so that I could change voltage in software like in nvidia inspector. If I can't do that then I was gonna make a bunch of different voltage BIOS's. Having to flash a different BIOS just to change the voltage is a real pain..
that would be nice if you can do that. i would be also interested in this, but don't know how to do that...

3630QM is Ivy Bridge, more effective than Sandy Bridge and way cooler
Yeah you are right, this could invest much time:( EC unlock seems really complicated... Do we have EC-experts in this forum?
