  1. Hey Ash, I saw on NBR a while back that you cut the ends of the heatsink. Is everything still alright with cards? just wondering if the other parts of the GPU might fry because you removed that metal piece. I have 2 extra heatsinks laying around so I may give it a go. Also, what size washer did you use? I tried removing the c-clips but i got extremely frustrated and decided to stop there before I smash it lol. The washer method seems like a much easier job, would you still need to add paste to the ram chips? or can you just use 0.5mm pads?
  2. I just found out that the 5870M requires 0.5mm pads, and the 4870M requires 1.0mm. I think I'll just replace the pads/thermal paste for now, and see where I'm at. Thanks for the guide though, very easy to follow. I may try the washer method that mw86 used, I'm just a little iffy about the thermal paste on the memory chips
  3. Oh, I don't really plan on using paste on the memory, I've heard of a few people frying their card because of it. I'm wondering if the pads you bought would be just as effective. @mw86, what size washer did you use? Thanks
  4. Yeah I'm a little worried about the CPU temps, I may pe-paste that. downloading a torrent increased the temps to 60C-65C for some reason.
  5. I'm just worried about cracking the GPU. Although I've done plenty of mods on the Clevo W860CU (case cutting, copper shim, paperclip), I guess I could give it ago. At least this time I have warranty, lol. Did you put thermal paste on the memory?
  6. What size of screwdriver is that, 2mm? Looking for one online. I've stripped too many laptop screws in my previous laptops Do you think MX-4 would work just as well for the CPU and GPU? I don't plan on doing the retention mod, so I'm not sure if the paste will be too thin.
  7. Hello, I was just wondering if you guys think these idle temps are too high. I'm about to do a re-paste of both the GPU and the CPU, I'm just not sure if it's worth it right now. Here's a screenshot of my idle temps: ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hosting
  8. I was looking into buy the Zalman NC3000, but it looks like the fan is only big enough to cool the CPU and not the 2 GPUs. I was also looking into buying the NC-2000, but that one looks like you'll have to slide down the laptop a little for the R2 vents to align with the cooler's vents.
  9. Does anyone know why my 5870M goes from 100/150 to 500/1000 when I'm not doing anything? I finished playing a game and it took about 20 minutes to drop the clock speeds to 100/150 then an hour later it goes back up to 500/1000. The weird thing is the fan doesn't even kick on and it just sits at 60C-65C. This only happens on the GPU0 card.
  10. Nice guide. reduced the CPU humming noise. It's wasn't to bad, but i do have sensitive ears .
  11. I guess the plastic glossy border around the keyboard is confirmed now. >.>
  12. If you're set on buying one, Dell might be able to give you credit. Dell can then can either refund/charge the difference. Might be faster.
  13. Looks great, the only thing I can't tell is whether or not the boarder around the keyboard will be like the R3 or R2. I really don't like the plastic glossy look.
  14. Yeah I got my R2 on the outlet as well, they had a nice 20% off, it was either an R2 or an R3. And of course, I had to get the R2. New consoles shouldn't be out until 2013-204 anyway, and even by then they are always a couple of years behind PCs. I mean the new consoles could have a GPU equivalent to the 6970M.
  15. Oh, yeah i agree with you there. It's just just less risky. I'm no expert when it comes to this, and I don't treat GPUs delicately - fried my first 5870M by trying the retention mod on the W860CU . Nice site you guys have here by the way, basically all the tech pros from NBR .
  16. Couldn't you just buy a copper shim and put it between the heatsink and the GPU? I tried it with my W860CU and it worked.
