Hello everyone, this is my first post so please be kind :)

I own a Clevo W370ET laptop, which comes with BIOS 1.02.17. I run Linux due to my day job and everything is great. I had to re-install Windows 8 (dual-boot) for various reasons and I discovered that my newly installed Win8 came with a rootkit. After a lot of digging about various unknown processes "rpcnetp.exe" etc, I found that this is a BIOS rootkit created by a company named Computrace. The rootkit is executed by Windows 8 on boot with admin privileges and installed a service which uses a fake name that appears as a legitimate one "RPC net" (like RPC but added the "net" at the end). I also noticed that it downloads an executable under the user temp directory and installs another remote monitoring program (the executable is signed by a company called Macrovision).

The bad news: this rootkit is impossible to remove unless I flash a new BIOS.

The good news: it does not work under Linux (yet).

Which is why I am here. I wanted to ask if your premamod BIOS is clear of the rootkit... or not.

    Thank you!

Are you sure this is really malicious software? A cursory search shows it to be laptop tracing software in case it gets stolen. I think this is the company behind it: https://www.absolute.com/en Of course if you don't want it on your device, then @Prema would be the man to flush it out.

i watched "the visit" the other day and was pleasantly surprised about how much i liked the movie. except the little shit that plays the little boy, i was pissed off by only looking at his face -.- xD

    Director: M. Night Shyamalan

I was mildly interested until I saw the above. This guy hasn't made a good movie since sixth sense and is basically a master of flops.

  3. So far the friend I mentioned has been part of the insider program shortly after Win 10 launched and he keeps getting free updated builds. The only caveat is you cannot opt out of updates which doesn't seem like a bad deal to me.

  4. Seems obvious but why not just upgrade his system to Windows 7?  This way he gets a free upgrade to Windows 10 as well. The license should be transferable to his new desktop as long as he calls MS and tells them.

Edit: Okay it seems that seller on Amazon is a bit shady, shame. He can alternatively join the MS insider program and get Windows 10 insider builds right now for free. A friend of mine did that and it's a legitimate path to an upgrade. It seems long term that might be less stressful than trying to find a work around for Vista.

  5. Officially, the upgrade path for the Alienware M18x-R1 ends with the nVidia GTX 580M but is that really going to stop the Tech|Inferno enthusiast from trying the latest and greatest? Absolutely not! So let’s get started.

    Parts & Tools Needed

    Quantity                                                                                                           Part Needed
    (1) or (2)126x150x680M-Stock-126x150.jpg.pagespeed Clevo GTX 680M Kit from RJTech
(1)150x148xx-bracket-150x148.jpg.pagespeed. X-Bracket (also included with 680M kit when purchased from RJTech)
(1)Screws Screws (Also included with 680M kit from RJTech)
(1)680M SLI cable SLI Cable (optional, can be found on eBay or directly from Dell)
    (1)IC Diamond ICD7 Diamond(recommended) or MX-4 Thermal Paste
    (1)Thermal pads Aftermarket Thermal Pads
    (1)ESDMat-150x110.jpg.4a11a8da592aedd84f716 ESD Mat + Strap
    (1)PrecisionScrewDrivers-150x145.jpg.67ee37 Precision Screwdriver Set
    (1)11P78W6uVIL-150x64.jpg.227536ca404a45baf Techni-Tool Spudger

    Clevo GTX 680M Upgrade Kit

When you purchase the Clevo GTX 680M Upgrade Kit from places like  RJTech or MXM-Upgrade, they usually send a full kit that includes the X-bracket, screws, thermal paste, and Clevo heatsink. For the M18x-R1 or R2, the Clevo heatsink will be useless so you can elect to either resell it on eBay or just toss it in the garbage. A point of importance to keep in mind is that whether you opt to purchase the GTX 680M by itself or as a kit, be sure it comes with the x-bracket and Clevo screws (more information on this below). Typical price for an upgrade kit as of September 2012 is around $750-$850.00 USD.

    M18x Disassembly

The Alienware M18x-R1 is a fairly sophisticated system that requires the user to have a familiarity with taking apart notebooks. Because some of the parts in the M18x are fragile, it is recommended you only attempt this if you feel you have sufficient experience.

    1. Refer to the Alienware M18x Service Manual to learn how to take apart the system.
    2. View Alienware’s Tear Down videos to see how its done.

    Installation

Installation is pretty straightforward, be sure to use the ESD mat + strap when handling the M18x and GTX 680M so that no damage occurs to the sensitive electronics.

    • Once the M18x has been opened up, remove the existing video cards.
    • Ensure that you are using GTX 560M/580M video card heatsinks for full compatibility with the GTX 680M.
    • You must use the screws (linked in the above table) designed for the Clevo GTX 680M X-Bracket since the Dell screws do not fit.
    • Remove the retention washers from the 560M/580M heatsink in order to remove the original screws.
    • Clean the previous thermal paste from the GPU using isopropyl alcohol and a cotton pad. Alternatively, coffee filter paper also works well.
    • Place the thermal pads on the video card according to the picture below:
    •  One problem you may encounter while fitting new pads is that the heatsink does not make full contact with the inductors on the video card. To alleviate this, a thicker aftermarket thermal pad can be used or copper shims + ICD7 such as the photo below:

    • Once the thermal pads and/or shim have been placed, do a test placement with the heatsink to ensure all the thermal pads make contact with the heatsink. An example of proper contact is illustrated in the photos below:
    • After proper pad contact has been determined, place a thin line of thermal paste across the GPU, seat the heatsink and fasten it with the screws. Both the right and left heatsinks require different fitting of the pads so always check for proper contact before installation.

    Driver .inf Modification

The Clevo GTX 680M may require the proper device id to be added to the nvcv.inf file found in the Display.Driver directory.

    Credit: jhmonroy

    Instructions

Using Notepad, open nvcv.inf from the ‘Display.Driver’ directory (I suggest you copy a backup of file elsewhere)

    (Using the replace function)

Replace all occurrences of DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_51051558 with DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_xxxx1028 (You can replace any GTX 680M Dev ID code you wish)

Replace all occurrences of %NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.5105.1558% with %NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.xxxx.1028% <–Dell hardware ID.

Replace all occurrences of NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.5105.1558 with NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.xxxx.1028

The latest beta drivers require more extensive modification that go beyond the scope of this article at this time. However, there are modified nVidia beta drivers available at LaptopVideo2Go that have the .inf files already modified for both the desktop and notebook and thus are a simple point and click installation–which is what we recommend.

Update 9/13/12: You can grab the latest 306.23 modded drivers from our forum to use with the M18x-R1 and Clevo GTX 680M.

  6. The question is how much temperature tolerance processors like this will have? I'd imagine the temperature would have to be kept fairly cool and controlled so they'll probably use it in quantum computing at first. Also, can it run Crysis?

  7. We got word that Green Man Gaming is offering 25% off some of the most anticipated titles of 2016 like The Division, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Hitman, Street Fighter V and many others. You can check out the full list of the games and the coupon code here: http://www.greenmangaming.com/most-anticipated-2016/

Personally I'll be picking up Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Hitman from them using this coupon. This is a nice discount for the holidays so pass it on to your friends and family and start 2016 off with some of the best games at discounted prices. Now if only Steam would offer the same kind of deals on new games.

  8. It's a frostbite engine based game and it's notorious for taking long, especially when compiling shaders. So yeah if you take a cursory look at Google, it seems a lot of others had similar issues: https://www.reddit.com/r/dragonage/comments/32f3cb/no_spoilers_is_anyone_else_experiencing_extremely/

what ov do u suggest for me if I can maintain 1280 3000 just fine on stock voltage? but I'm gonna try 1400

Keep bumping up the core by 10 MHz until you find it's no longer stable. At that point add one additional stepping of voltage until it stabilizes and then run a benchmark to check for stability + temperatures. Keep in mind though that the GPU temperature read out does not tell you anything about how hot the other GPU components are getting so it's best not to get too ambitious, especially with a thin notebook like the Lenovo.

  10. A little more than a year ago, NVIDIA, one of the largest graphics processing unit (GPU) companies in the world, claimed Samsung infringed on three of it's core patents and asked the ITC to ban Samsung smartphones and tablets that used Samsung's Exynos SoC (system on chip) and Qualcomm's Snapdragon SoC.

    3797-c31f0bb3_680_400.jpg.6562acb8fd55cc

However, an ITC administrative law judge ruled that Samsung and Qualcomm did not infringe on two of NVIDIA's patents and declared the third that they did infringe to be invalid. After the case went to the full ITC commission, it upheld the administrative law judge's ruling in favor of Samsung.

In turn, Samsung counter-sued NVIDIA claiming that it had violated three of Samsung's patents, specifically  6,147,3856,173,349 and 7,804,734  which date back to the 1990s covering implementation of SRAM. And now an ITC administrative law judge (ALJ) has found NVIDIA did violate those patents and the case is set to go before the full ITC commission. NVIDIA argues that the patents Samsung used in its countersuit are outdated and no longer used in modern designs: "We look forward to seeking review by the full ITC which will decide this case several months from now."  One of the three patents is set to expire in 2016.

NVIDIA, despite being the world leader in visual computing on the desktop, has not had much success in replicating that dominance in mobile designs with it's Tegra SoC and has since moved on to using its technology in other products and applications such as the Drive PX  self-driving platform and it's consumer SHIELD android based gaming box.

  11. Ok now that I saw the movie, I agree with the consensus that the movie had a subpar plot overall:

    Spoiler

In addition to what Khenglish said:

    • Not plot related but the casting choice for mini me vader aka Kylo Ren couldn't have been worse. The guy has zero screen presence and just comes off as a whiny pussy.
    • There's no way Han Solo and Leia Organa would give birth to such a sissy. Plus he got his ass handed to him by a girl (Rey). Even Finn aka new Jar Jar gave him a good fight and he's a sanitation storm trooper.
    • It was obvious from the very start that Han Solo was gonna get killed by Kylo Ren soon as we learned he's his father and it became a cheap plot device to garner sympathy for Solo and hate towards Kylo Ren as some evil dude.
    • The entire concept of Luke Skywalker becoming emo because Kylo Ren wiped out all the Jedis and retreating to some planet to become a hermit is asinine. What's worse is the choice of making the map to Skywalker as the main storyline. Besides, in space, why do they need a traditional 2D map that connects the dots? They would just need a set of x/y/z coordinates.
    • Why is there a need for a resistance after the Republic is clearly in power? Shouldn't they build a proper army to deal with threats like the First Order (another silly name).
    • Finn is the new Jar Jar binks.
    • Lots of pew pew, little substance - welcome to JJ Abramsville.

svl7; according to your opinion, should we increase our gpu voltages for better clock ? and in last days did you tested any voltages and clock in order to optimum performance ?

You can always increase voltage for better stability for overclocks but there's rapidly diminishing returns and you need adequate cooling.

  14. AMD has allegedly delayed their upcoming flagship dual GPU based on the Fiji silicon dubbed "Gemini" to Q2 2016. Earlier this year, during an E3 livecast, Lisa Su (AMD CEO) had committed to a release date of Christmas 2015. When questioned by hardware.fr about the delay, AMD claims it has been pushed back because the HMD (head mounted display) ecosystem isn't quite ready yet and therefore they opted to hold off on Gemini's release until Q2 2016.

    64a.thumb.jpg.95877d7cea1de507289466442f

However, this does bring into question whether Gemini will even be relevant in Q2 2016 as AMD is also scheduled to begin release of it's much anticipated next generation Greenland GPU during that time frame.

  15. Gigabyte is a really good brand but if you want a gaming notebook I would avoid 4k panels. Even desktops with dual Titan X's can barely handle 4K so a mobile GPU like 980m would choke and be completely useless. You would be forced to play at non-native resolution and on an LCD that looks terrible. I would pick a gaming notebook that has the standard 1920 x 1080p resolution and the 980m as the perfect combination.
