  1. All of the settings are avaiailable in the power options but neither have any effect on the brightness of the screen. The most I get is a slight dim when the power adapter is removed.

I have also tried reinstalling OSD but it doesn't appear to have fixed it.

AMD GPU? If yes try this --> http://forum.techinferno.com/alienware-m15x/2780-brightness-issue.html

I am using 7970m with 13.11 Beta 8 drivers and i have no issues with brightness at the moment. I also can control the brightness by using the key on keyboard.

    Good luck.

  2. No, nothing will blow up. I run my M15x without the backcover for long times, dust build-up isn't that bad either, you will have to clean the cooling fins anyway, if you run it with or without cover.

You will probably see a little temp difference if you modify the cover like that.

Bro, is it possible for us to get the 'blueprint' in 3D art for this back access panel? I plan to print them in 3D.

    Thanks.

  3. Good idea but I just assumed fans would ramp up to maximum eventually and stabilise temperatures. Also going to try re-pasting and cleaning heatsink.

Indeed. That is the idea why I'm using HWINFO. It is more nice if you have good a notebook cooler to stabilise the temp. Last week i tried Arma 3 (Beta version released by them) and max the graphics performance. No shutdown, performed very well on said game and the temp is below 80c. I'm waiting for BF4 to test the performance for 7970m attached on my 'ancient' m15x :65:

    Just wanted to update:

I ordered my card from MXMUpgrade and installed it last night; it was actually a really easy install and the card's been performing well so far! MXM was great and gave me thermal paste as specified on their website and sent me the screws for the 7970 that I requested as well (not sure if they were included by default, so I asked for them just to be sure). Shipping from Belgium only took 5 business days.

The only problem I ran into (not sure if this is specific to those upgrading from the 260m) was the W shaped locking washers that held the screws from the heatsink to the GTX260. I ended up using two metal nail files to carefully pry them off, but it took my friend and I about five minutes just for those four little annoying washers. Having a proper tool to remove them would have made it much easier, so if anyone here is thinking about upgrading from the 260M, make sure you're ready to deal with that before you start taking your computer apart.

Other than that and the aforementioned filing of the screw holes, it really was plug and play. I'm on AMD 13.4 as recommended by Genetics earlier in the thread. Using HWinfo for fan control, and even with everything on ultra I'm sitting at around 70C (not overclocking the card). Worth every penny, it really is a world of difference from the 260M. :)

    Enjoy your games bro! :14_002:

  4. What would be considered acceptable gpu temperatures whilst gaming? I'm running undervolted and still temperatures can sneak up to 80 degrees.

I get thermal shutdowns at 85 degrees. No idea why....

Did you try to control the fans by using the HWINFO? Mine usually below 80 degrees on Very High Settings or Ultra Settings (Depends on games)

  5. Thanks for this. I recently made the upgrade from 5850 to a 7970. I was directed to this forum from NBR as they speak highly of it :)

    Welcome to Tech Inferno brotha!

maybe most people don't reply, because they don't have a clue.. like me.

i have a clevo card, DP doesn't work.. as soon windows loads, the second monitor turns black and shuts off.

i think @Genetics is one of the few users here having a DELL card and are able to use the DP.

unfortunaly he is having his wedding celebration.

about your clocks issue, have you tried svl7s underclock vbios? i got my card running with the 0.950v vbios, runs like a charm. no problems at all!

  7. Wish can help you with that brother! Unfortunately i'm also using my DP for second monitor, luckily it works very well with the dell card!

I'm going offline for 3-4 weeks for my wedding celebration! Gonna miss the techinferno!

anyone using a dell 7970m, but not using the display port wanna trade his with a clevo 7970m? :Banane34:

i need to get my DP to wrok :(

  8. Done some tweaking, here is the latest result for the Vantage : AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-720QM Processor ,Alienware score: P15319 3DMarks

Slightly improved even with 4GB RAM! I still facing some issues recently about bsod , machine_check_exception and clock_watchdog_timeout.

Using the debug to analyze the culprit and guess what?

    Probably caused by : atikmdag.sys ( atikmdag+7460d3 ) :62:

@svl7 Mine here --> AMD Radeon HD 7970M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-720QM Processor ,Alienware score: P15200 3DMarks

Taken when i was on Windows 7 , do you thing its good for 720QM the score like this?

Thank you for your opinion :Banane34:

  9. My personal opinion :

1 : Windows 7 = Score slightly high on 3d Mark Vantage, but not pretty stable.

2 : Windows 8 = Score lower on 3d Mark Vantage, but quite stable.

    I'm using Windows 8 64 bit again now , 7970m on Windows 7 just.....strange.

just a sec, you tried windows 7 64 bit and probably want to switch back to windows 7 64 bit? :b

    do you mean windows 8?

does the card run bad on a windows 8 machine? i am using it..

(still waiting for my card :grumpy:)
