The box is somewhat similar to what we guys have on our DIY eGPUs, yes your point is valid, I wish to see a Intel NUC size eGPU solution in the future even with a proprietary cabling solution with real bandwidth performance of PCIE 3.0 X16, some room for another GPU to have SLI in a form of MXM module and a little more space for an HDD/SDD storage. Wouldn't that be great if that will come out of production? Core i7 4940MX with super downclocking solution to save battery...

    Otherwise, I am really sold at this concept man of what MSI GS30 Shadow has to offer (no fees given for my endorsement LOL)

    Yeah that would really be something =)

    Who knows, maybe they'll make a portable version of this box with a data cable, sonnet style?

    At least to me, when ever a built is large enough to be a PC on its own I really don't see any real benefits of it, except that it's a super fun project, which of course should be enough for motivation don't get me wrong!

    We can't deny that we are making performance sacrifices going the eGPU route and the very important benefit for me is portability. I love the thought that my setup can make it into a backpack when going home to parents for holidays or visiting a old friend for a weekend of intense gaming. I must say it has really enriched my life!

    For me this MSI project brings nothing new to the table and I assume it will cost piles of $$$$.

    With those money you could probably go crazy and buy a macbook pro with the most hardcore i7 quad version + 2x Akitio's for a 32Gbps SLI setup =)

  2. It's a nice concept and all but when the "expansion box" is as large or larger than a desktop computer (no mobility) I don't really see the point, especially when you must dedicate your laptop on top of this box so you can't hide it easily.

    When looking at the laptop itself I'm extremely curious what they packed in there, did they manage to put a real i7 quad in there or the shitty "u-version" (excuse my language)?

    The eGPU port is also very very interesting! Maybe they got something that matches the TB2 in performance or better? :P

    My thoughts goes directly to DIY (assuming no u-cpu): Ditch the hideous box and make something portable out of it instead, love it!!

    Reading a bit more and see that you can't render the eGPU on internal screen killed it for me :(

    Judging by the cooling assembly (dual heatpipes and blow outs) it could actually be cooling a 45W cpu, what do you think?

  3. When I only use the riser + don't plug in the DC jack for Akitio, the green/blue lights do not turn on. The Akitio is not recognized and the 970 fans do not start. The 970 doesn't seem to start at all. Is this a power issue or is this 970 broken?

    I don't use power to the riser for GTX 970, just Akitio PSU + PCIe 2x 6pin from ATX. Have you tested w/o power to the riser?

  4. Thanks for the great reply! I've placed the GPU on a plastic CD case but unfortunately I think there's some damage somehow. The fans of the GPU do not spin at all. Is there any way to test this out without needing another PC?

    OK that's a bad sign. The fans should start spinning when:

    1. the Akitio PSU is plugged in and SWEX is turned on

    2. Thunderbolt cable is plugged in to the system = this is when the fans should spin up

    If thunderbolt cable isn't plugged in you wont get power to the PCI slot.

    I can't really think of any idea to check the GPU w/o another computer. Your riser, does it look intact? No loose pins or so?

    Please share a photo of your setup.

    PS. If you happen to have an older PCIe card or GPU, test that one to see if it seems to react.

    I will try Windows UEFI installation but I think something is wrong with hardware since the Akitio is being recognized but the 970 is not.

    The SWEX works. When I flip the switch on the SWEX, the fans for both the PSU and the Akitio turn on. However, the Akitio green/blue lights do not turn on + is not recognized when I boot into OS X or Windows. The GTX 970 does not turn on either. The Akitio green/blue lights only seem to turn on when I have the DC jack plugged in to Akitio, which I'm told is not needed with the riser. Do I have the riser plugged in correctly?

    I have the Akitio board sitting in it's chassis and but the 970 is sitting on top of an old metal hard drive. Is that ok? Right now I'm just trying to get this to work. Shouldn't the card have some kind of response when powered on?

    I'm wondering if I have a faulty 970 card? I've seen the fans spin once but haven't been able to repeat the process. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Is it not getting enough power? I have the 2x 6+2 pins plugged in and the molex riser plugged into the female molex splitter provided by PSU.

    Please help! Thank you.

    The GPU fans are powered by the PCI slot, that's not an indication that the ATX is working. My rutine is the following:

    1. Connect PCIe power from ATX + connect power from AKitio PSU

    2. Power on the ATX via SWEX

    3. Plug the thunderbolt cable to the system = fans spinning up and then settles a little

    4. Safely remove hardware, ejecting eGPU from the list (if detected)

    5. Unplug TB cable, wait 2 seconds

    6. Re-plug TB cable = fans spinning up again and then settles

    7. Check device manager for your eGPU under display adapters (right-click and scan for hardware changes)

    Any improvements?

    PS: I'd absolutely not have the PCB side of the GPU resting against metal, that's not good at all and will eventually cause damage to the GPU (shortage etc.).

    Use an old CD plastic case/cover or something non conducting to support the GPU.

    I'm gonna put this question out here:

    Do anyone have the knowledge of modding the output voltage of an AC-adapter?

    I'm currently interested in the 19.5v 16.9A M18x XM3C3 PSU (this is not the DA-2)

    GOAL

    I want to modify the output voltage of this adapter from 19.5V to ~12.7V while maintaining the 330W max output.

    If there is anyone having some ideas how or if this can be achieved, please let me know!

    I'm not interested in using any adapting/convering board, I want to modify the internal components.

    EDIT: This seems very possible by resistor modding, one unit is coming my way!

    EDIT2: Read that this PSU can be pushed up to 440W!

  7. Wait a second, I don't have a G46, I have a G750. But there are not so many differences between them I assume, so we can go for a common owner G series lounge.

    As can be seen, both fans can be turned off completely, NBFC can manipulate the fan speed.

    Still not sure if it is glitchy or not, but the results are pretty ok I guess.

    Not like it matters the argument, percent also translates into a number after all.

    Attached is my profile for both CPU and GPU, I think I just renamed/switched the profiles from other Asus profile and changed a register.

    The only issue is that it depends only on CPU temperature, so if it goes outside the range it will also spin the GPU fan as well.

    If you don't want this behaviour and you have issues with only the CPU fan, any other single fan (cpu) profile that works is just as good.

    Hi Arise.

    I'm still investigating how to control the fans, when running FC4 for instance I can see core temps of 96c, while fanspeed ~4100RPM (according to NBFC) :S

    I just now realized that you've uploaded your profile a long time ago and I totally missed it the first time =)

    Have you done any improvements to this profile since the upload or do you use this as your current?

    I'm going to test it when I get home tonight and see if it works for the G46VW as well.

    EDIT: Did a test and it worked, but it only pushed it to 4000RPM. Do you think it can be changed to achieve 6000RPM?

  8. @Tech Inferno Fan I have low fps in games while a desktop with the same gpu and similar cpu would get more. I have the PE4L v2.1B (mPCIe version), and I was wondering if I could gain more fps if I buy the EXP GDC. The PE4L has a x1 1.1 link and the EXP GDC would have a x16 1.1 link (correct me if I'm wrong).

    The PE4L can pass through max 5GB/s (2.5GB on each side), while the EXP GDC would pass through 80GB/s (16x2.5x2=80). (again, correct me if I'm wrong).

    My gpu (r7-240) has a bandwidth of 34.6GB/s, so the PE4L bottlenecks the max bandwidth right?

    I'm sorry buddy but the PE4L and EXP GDC both use 5GB/s so no difference there. What system are you using?

    VOLTAGE RAMP UP

    I'm pretty sure know what the problem is now, not 'over current protection' but rather 'voltage ramp up time', this triggers the DA-2 to shut off.

    A theory is that this is implemented on purpose to prevent us for using the DA-2 as an ATX PSU (I don't know about that).

    BAD MOLEX CONNECTORS

    There seem to be huge voltage drop off in the DA-2 cable and molex connectors as well, some users had success using screw type terminals in order to prevent these drops:

    "don't use a molex connector, splice+solder the wires directly, or install a screw type terminal. I am currently using the latter. Voltage at the brick is 12.4v, at the Pico it's 12.14. Before that it was dropping to 11.5v with a molex conenctor"

    REPRODUCABLE BLACKOUT SCENARIO

    The 'voltage ramp up time' theory seems to be be in line with my symptom benching the Sky Diver demo, the demo normally goes black for a 1/4 second and then full load the right after (like a cut scene), this triggers the DA-2 to black out.

    Sooo, a pico PSU in between seems to smooth things out for most people, the answer lies in there, but what?... caps?

    TESTINGS

    In order to rule a bad Molex connection of my last DA-2 setup I'll now do this:

    Working scenario as reference:

    Akitio PCB + x16 slot: Powered by Akitio PSU (just connecting it as usual)

    GPU: ATX 2 x 6-pin

    = No problem at all.

    Test of possibly bad Molex connection to the slot:

    Akitio PCB + x16 slot: Powered by Akitio PSU

    GPU: Powered by DA-2 (have to make a 2 x 6pin connector for it)

    If this works, then the problem lies in molex connector, but I highly doubt it.

    Very nice!

    My Zotac GTX970 seems to peak around 180W (using watt meter) so maybe that's too much for the DA-2.

    Weird enough I can reproduce the black out-problem by running Sky Diver demo in 3Dmark, it happens just after she has landed and just before entering the big cave opening.

    This rules out the temp issue since my DA-2 is not hot to the touch.

    I'm more into the voltage drop issue, I should try to measure the voltages during the test once and for all to see what's going on.
