  1. @ghoul you have to note that your model has got the 750M SLI which doesn't get that hot at all. I tried to fix this only by undervolting but I've either got crashes caused by instability or I've got overheating crashes.

    I wanna share my FINAL SOLUTION for the overheating problem of the Lenovo Ideapad Y510p with you which doesn't include any hardware changes. The used values worked for each game I have, while higher clocks and voltages only worked for some games.

     

    1. Undervolting and underclocking the CPU using Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (XTU):

    • set the Multipliers for 3 and 4 active cores to 26 (reduces heat and prevents throttling)
    • set the Core Voltage Offset to -50 mV
    • these settings won't change after a restart

     

    2. Undervolting and underclocking both GPUs using Nvidia Inspector (NVI):

    • to change the voltage, modifying the BIOS of both internal GPU and Ultrabay GPU will be necessary, this is done by using the BIOS-Mod of Svl7 right here: https://www.techinferno.com/index.php?/forums/topic/3546-lenovo-y410p-y510p-unlocked-bios-wlan-whitelist-mod-vbios-mod/
    • then download Nvidia Inspector: http://orbmu2k.de/tools/nvidia-inspector-tool  (Download button is down the website directly above the comments)
    • unzip it and start the file, click "Show Overclocking" and wait for 10-20 second until the values have been refreshed
    • you will always have to wait some time until the values are shown correctly
    • then set the Base Clock Offset to -118 MHz, the Memory Clock Offset to -200MHz and the Voltage Offset to -112.5 mV and click on "Apply Clocks & Voltage", if you have 2 GPUs, select the second one in the bottom left hand corner, do the same for it and apply
    • then you will have two options: 1. you create Clock Shortcuts for each GPU using the button and do apply these setting after each restart or 2. you right click that button and create a Clock Startup Task so it will be applied after each restart automatically (which is much better)

     

    I will also attach a batchfile that does exactly the same as the Shortcuts.

    The values I used should work for each Y510p but you can also try using different ones.

    I hope this helps some people.

     

    The temperatures:

    - in idle 45-50°C

    - under load 60-85°C (depending on which game and which settings)

  4. This is the time I want to recommend something to every Y510p/Y500 owner (I saw some people on the previous pages of this thread who bricked their BIOSes even after there were so many posts of people who bricked their BIOSes already):

     

    DO NEVER TRY TO UNDERVOLT OR CHANGE ANY OTHER SETTINGS IN THE MODDED BIOS IF YOU DON'T KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOUR'RE DOING!

    IT WON'T WORK! AND WILL CAUSE YOU SO MUCH TROUBLE...JUST DON'T DO IT!

    Hey, I'm still looking for stable values for my CPU and GPU's (2x GT755M)... You said you would undervolt+overclock both GPU and CPU... Why do you do that? would it work for me as well? Thanks in advance :)

    I didn't fix it yet. It's since I gave it to a computer shop and they fixed it... I would be very glad if someone had a solution and it's a software issue... but I think it could also be hardware related :(

  6. No :playful: , i dont know any official ratio. Like I said, every GPU chip has different settings that work.

    You can try different values and always come down to these, if those dont work. For me, I found a sweet spot, as mentioned in my earlier screenshots. Any game and the temps dont go higher than 80 for me.

    Okay i'll try that... thank you very much for your help :) before I used some batchfiles from the internet that do underclock and somehow that fixed my problem but I just got 70 fps on Low graphics... no i get 70-90 on High graphics... that's amazing :D

  7. I am sure this forum has more intelligent people than myself however I can tell you that undervolting is definitely not going to harm your chip when done in reasonable boundaries.

    Basic concept - The GPU needs a certain voltage to achieve the higher clocks.

    Some GPUs can achieve their higher clocks at a lower voltage as well, which essentially reduces the heat generated in the chip from voltage (Undervolting)

    Reducing the clocks decreases the stress on the chip at a given voltage.

    Main objective - To find a voltage and clock combination that will reduce heat and give a stable system.

    Now, certain GPUs may not show temp drop even after undervolting, this is just due to the way it has been manufactured. No 2 chips are the same and wont behave the same. All I can recommend is you can drop the voltage by 125mV and reduce the Base clock by 100 and Memory clock by 250, see if that helps.

    Did that, I think it works :) played for about 30 minutes... the temps stopped going up at 81°C and 84°... I get 70-90 fps on BF4 High graphics... I don't know if I could get better performance with a little higher clocks... Where do you know the ratio between the clocks and voltage from? I'm happy for now but of course I want the best performance I can get with no overheating and no instability :D

  8. The cache voltage is fine. You underclocked both settings - Base clock (-50) and memory clock (-100)?

    You can try reducing the voltage further to -100mV, keeping the clocks at same level and see if there are any crashes.

    Also, you can apply this mod to provide good ventilation for the Ultrabay fan -

    The mod will void warranty. I have applied this mod also.

    Try running GPU-z when you are playing the game, to see what max clocks the GPU is reaching, post a screenshot of the graph and values screen of GPU-z.

    So I don't need to change the chache voltage?

    And yes I underclocked both settings: base clock -50 and memory clock -100 and -87.5mV but overheated. Then I tried -112.5mV and it went up to 86°C main GPU and 92°C at the ultrabay GPU. I was able to play for about 30 minutes but then the game crashed due to overheating (I guess).

    After that I tried -125.0mV, it didn't crash and it didn't get that extremely hot but after some time I think the performance decreased :( should I try -100mV as well or should I try other values? I'm actually a noob at that but would be glad to find out values with that I have the best performance and no overheating.

    I use MSI Afterburner to have a look at the temps and the clocks. The clocks were constant at the value I set them.

    I applied your settings and tested the temps and stability playing BF4 (I always have no fps limit, I wanna stress my GPUs to see if I got stable values and temps won't rise up). First I set graphics to medium and later on to high. The temps were going up permanently but very slow in comparison with the undervolting values before. After something like 20 minutes the ultrabay GPU reached 95° and the main one 90°C, then I stopped.

    I would be very glad if you could give me a hint which value I should try next or how I should go on :)

    Another little question: I undervolted the CPU using Intel XTU as you said... Should I lower the cache voltage offset as well?

  10. Enable SLi, goto NVI and dont set your desired voltage until the clock of both GPUs settle to idle state (135core,Memory 405) in the current tab. After that set voltage for GPU 1 then 2 and save voltage shortcuts for each gpu separately, so next time u want to undervolt just double click these shortcuts individually. Let me know how much does yer system undervolt for games. Regards!

    Ok setting voltages and clocks works now :D thanks so far!! I tried underclocking by 100mHz and undervolting by 87.5mV, no crashes due to the voltage but it gets very hot (I tested it with Battlefield 4 on Medium settings, no fps limit). I stopped at 90°C at GPU 0 and 95°C at GPU 1. At the beginning I've got between 100 and 130 fps (which is equal to the performance that I get without any changes at the clocks and voltages) and when it got really hot I just had between 80 and 105 fps.

    How should I go on with undervolting and underclocking? I wanna find values with that I get no crashes due to instability or overheating and no performance loss as well... Do you have any idea which values I should try next?

  11. That is not entirely true. My laptop was running quite hot (since summers hit) with Ultrabay reaching 98 C. With a few mods, its running cooler.

    1) You can install the unlocked BIOS and VBIOS mod mentioned here -

    Then use NVIDIA Inspector to,

    Reduce clocks on both GPU by 100 Mhz

    Reduce voltage on both GPU by 87.5 mV

    and you laptop will never go beyond 80 C on any of them.

    2) Use NVIDIA XTU to downclock your CPUs at Core 3 and 4. I have mine set at 27x.

    3) Do the Y510P casing mod to provide good cooling for the Ultrabay fan.

    Hey guys :),

    if I try to lower the voltages of both GPUs with nvidia inspector (and yes i modded both Vbios and main bios) the slider of "voltage offset" always goes back to 0 if I press apply :( reducing the core clock by 100mhz works fine. How did you do that? also i don't know which power state i have to choose... would be very happy if you could post an exact explanation on how to do it :) big thanks in advance :)

  12. Yes, some of our previous discussion on doing the BIOS chip swap was replaced. Anyway, I opened up the system to look for these BIOS chips as indicated by @Lizzo and believe these are the ones:

  13. Just download a bios from the Lenovo website for your model, use 7zip to extract it and then you will see a file with the extension ".bin" and rename the file to Yx01

    Ok I'll do that. And then I need to put it on a bootable DOS drive like at the installation of the modded bios? I hope it will boot from the usb drive.

    edit: Okay I did that and it didn't boot. I don't know if it's important but before that happened I set USB Boot to off and BIOS Backflash as well. I continue to hope for a solution and thank you for your help so far :)

  14. Lol changing the multiplier won't cause that issue... Changing a setting pertaining to the video card (like I did) will cause that issue. As I posted, the solution that worked for me was taking it apart, and exchanging places of the primary BIOS with the secondary BIOS then running the emergency BIOS of recovery method of putting a stock bios file on a flash drive (named Yx01.bin) then plugging in the flash drive (fat32 format), removing all power sources from the laptop, and then holding down fn+r then plugging in the power adapter and finally pressing the power button while still holding down the fn+r keys.

  15. i once did that and i just powered it on and let it stay like that for about 10minutes and it alone by itself turned off and reseted bios

    if it boots but with black screen then press F2 several tmes after you see the keyboard lightup then count like 10-15 seconds and hit F9 and ENTER and then F10 Enter and that should reset the bios and everything peachy

    i have a an SLI setup on my Y410p and everything runs Perect and i totally love this pc.... but is their a way to flash GPU internal BIOS to change core speeds and do a little under-volt since i have to run a Frame cap to 60 so temperatures dont go above 80Celsius... i think if i had both gpus to 925mhz at 0.9volts .... it would be the sweetspot for no heating issues:purplebananna:

    I tried the second solution but it didn't work... is it possible that some hardware got damaged? I'm gonna try the first solution now.

    Hey rockykoston,

    I have the same laptop as well and my solution was the "GT755M undervolt & underclock.bat"-file from this link: NvidiaInspectorForY510p. It sets the GPU clock speeds of both GPUs to 954mHz and changes something at the memory clocks. Somehow that results in a lower voltage and no more overheating and no more crashes while gaming. You do not need to mod your BIOS to use this file. I modded my BIOS as well and tried to lower the voltage of the GPUs without underclocking but I only got crashes while undervolting with Nvidia Inspector and the modded BIOS. Now my question is: Could you explain to me how exactly you did the undervolt with Nvidia Inspector and what voltage you chose? Maybe you could make such a batchfile with the commands like above.

    I would be very glad if you could help me out :)

  17. Where is everyone acquiring their bioses? The lenovo site does not list any and my laptop came with 1.07... I guess I could just mod that and remove the whitelist but I would like to run an updated bios.

    There you can download the 3.08 BIOS update and the VBIOS called second vga BIOS... :)

    Still waiting for some ideas about my problem :)

  18. NEVER change the voltage in bios, you will brick your laptop. You can use intel extreme tuning utility to set the voltage and multipliers for cpu, it will set it automatically after each windows boot and nvidia inspector with windows task scheduler to set gpu clock and voltage automatically after logon.

    Uuups :D I did it already but reset the options back to default... hopefully nothing got damaged. And i have flashed my VBIOS back to version 3.05 and I think that fixed the crashes for me... I can use the "undervolt&underclock"-file from http://www.mediafire.com/download/mdlmr2zz9kbzzbv/<wbr>NvidiaInspectorForY510p.rar again without crashes. That worked for me before flashing the VBIOS but then no longer. I don't know if the modded VBIOS is faulty? My problem is now that I don't know whether my crashes were caused by the wrong undervolt values or the VBIOS.

  19. Your values are good but I have seen better. Higher values mean the chip works at lower voltages. Anyways, I suggest you get a cooling pad with summer almost here. There is no program which would let u increase or decrease voltage in small increments. There are games which will let you undervolt till -162mv and be stable. Games from Crytek for instance. Try Crysis 3 and Ryse. So just dont fret over some games that dont like a heavy undervolt. I suggest you use a cooling pad for these.

    I think -75mv is a stable value. I get no crashes caused by the undervolt anymore but still overheating. Maybe I should try to underclock? How should I do that? Does anyone know a stress test tool for my GPUs that supports SLI?

  20. Download GPU-Z and rightclick on its menu to open ASIC Quality. Report that of both gpus. Secondly, I suggest you buy a good cooling pad. I'm too looking for one, but confused whether to buy one with a big 200mm fan or with 60mm fans directed at the intake vents? What do you suggest?

    Ok I did it. Here are the values: 78.7%; 78.6%. I think I won't buy a cooling pad... :) because I think it isn't worth it. Is there any other program that I can use to control the voltages? Nvidia inspector works but it just goes in 12.5mv steps. MSI Afterburner prevents me to change the voltage and I'd like to change the voltage by 1mv steps if it's possible. Thanks
