sorry, but the y500 is not a slim laptop by any means! Its thick and heavy (I'm typing from one right now lol), but its a gaming beast! If you want something cheap, slim, cute and awesome, I'd go for a refurb Asus Q501LA. I recently bought one, and although it is not for gaming, the IPS screen is beautiful, battery life is great (almost 10 hours with SSD), and it's almost 1/2 height of the Lenovo.

Hi There, Im a new father, with a very busy baby, looking for some ways to improve my existing hardware, and take advantage of every bit of performance that it has to offer, as right now I'm on a tight budget and can't afford to upgrade all the time -
Hi All, I bought this lappie to replace my old aging acer, and to get some sweet hardware accelerated aes encryption. On the old acer, I had a little tool to turn off the fan until it reached a certain temperature I defined, so it ran quiet with the SSD. With the asus, I noticed the fan runs even with no load, with power save mode, and its a bit annoying. I thought maybe its a bit hot, so I applied AS5 to the cpu / gpu, and the temps are below 30c, but still the fan will run no matter what. I tried some of utilities I know, but none of them recognize this mobo. I'm wondering if anyone has the same laptop, or some ideas on utilities that I could try to change this? Thanks :-)

I got the y500 with the crappy wifi. I read that if you disable bluetooth, it improves the signal, but for me it didn't work. So I got a spare wifi card (dell 1520), and tried to install it, but got the error message saying it's not authorized, which led me to this forum. I currently got bios 1.05, and willing to go to 2.04, but I'm a bit worried about all the options that looks like will show up. I did read 30 pages or so of the thread, but did not find much discussion on what each option does. Assuming I just do a simple update, and reset the bios to defaults, will everything work, or do I need to fiddle with the settings to make it work? Any tips? Also, did anyone brick their laptop with this? Mine is out of the warranty, so I need to be careful. Thanks
