  1. oh gawd, they're bad looking. I still need to see one in person since I have considered a m14x as a portable now with going to a desktop in april. Chiclet keyboard and the front grill, whats happened? The older design was rehashed for a few generations and maybe its grown on me. Time to wait and see like most of you guys.

  2. has anyone of the posters in this thread about not getting their DP to work have success?

i just tried to use my extern monitor, but it doesn't detect any signal.. using the DP to hdmi adapter that came with the machine.

    any hints?

Never. Only works without ati drivers of any kind installed on win8. Never tried expanded settings as without drivers makes it useless. Hopefully someone will get it before I sell my own little beast

  3. @dalan if you get a 240w psu with your new m17x, let us know if it still has the power indicator ring. I tape mine off with electrical tape although if they left it, it'd be wonderful if somehow it supported matching the color from some part of AlienFX. I couldn't stand the mismash when using non blues/purples. And honestly sometimes all the extra leds gets a bit bothersome when I can't shut them off.

  4. Tried this before but still failed, did the re-paste using different thermal including Arctic Silver 5 . Is it normal if i use MSI Kombustor the card will max to 850/1200 all the way? Thanks :)

If it stresses or sets clock yes. I don't use kombustor except on a desktop with gtx470 to auto load overclock. It's been fire and forget the last year.

Curiously what are your idle clock temps like on the 7970m

  5. @ssj92

1: Using 12.11 Beta 11 also throttle the GPU to the max 850/1200Mhz (Even undervolt to 0.950v)

2: When reached 85c, the laptop will go turn off.

    3: Running Windows 8 with 720QM processor.

    Any idea else?

    Thanks.

Check gpu fan speeds when over 71 or 75c. Override with hwinfo64 to 5000rpm and recheck temps. If still high, repaste

  6. Good idea... But no difference at all... :( Does maybe anyone else here use Win8 without performance issues?

Hi kack, im on windows 8. I haven't had any severe performance issues although I haven't played the same games on 8 as I did Win7.

Although now im curious and need to install a bench and see how it does, self doubt lol

Update: performance as good as Win7. Ended up with 0.975v vbios and cutting my xm oc. Borderlands 2 runs like a dream maxed out 1080p. Low physx of course

  7. Hi loafer, I am unable to complete a full 3dmark11 run without throttling either. I have the same setup although singularly stressing CPU or GPU to max I don't throttle. Really I've only OC my CPU and adjust from a minor overclock (2.66 -> 3.33) between 65/62 and 72/67. I've played ~70hours borderlands2 and only get throttling if I start gaming after resuming from sleep mode. I have to reboot after resuming from sleep other then that I have no issues.

I think 3dmark11 is pushing CPU/GPU both at max and even with the 920xm at stock, its at the limits of the M15x boards power limitations. At 55/55, your CPU won't be running at your higher TS steppings and when consistently pushed (not enough power) so it'll settle to a lower step than you specified. Like, it may be running at x16 or x17 all cores instead of your set x18. Then you'll want to find where your CPU has enough power without overheating where your system consistently stays at the higher clocks you set. wPrime, Prime95, IBT, Linpack, OCCT CPU, whatever and TS, HWiNFO64 or Argus Monitor to see if/how often your CPU throttles itself and adjust your power settings to reduce this throttling (assuming your under 95c)

  8. Interesting. I'll see about reading the papers soon. I am curious, got a 5 series (m15x) mind you guys. Bricking the mobo would suck although I'm under warranty. For the part - im curious about the clock/stepping/voltage settings controlled from the intel me firmware and chip. Oh yah and occasionally I like to mess around so hopefully my add ends early that I ocd on Intel me for a day or two

  9. Modded A09, will check revision later. I should've clarified slipped my mind, in Windows no matter the driver version I use ever since install. dp out works during post. If theres a way to make this work with the clevo card that'd be awesome. of course I'll feel like a crank then but worth it!

Chipset rev 11, Southbridge rev 06

  10. Okay i have the dell card and the Clevo x bracket, but the supplier of the xbracket didnt send me the 4 screws as per listing, anything special about these screws or can i pick up from any computer shop? also, when it comes to the pasting, spread or ball? some people explain its smarter to spread the paste on the dye rather than place a ball and spread via placing the heatsink on top?

    Many thanks,

    JB91

Nothing special, hardware store or computer store may and should have screws that fit. Bring the bracket just incase. When you do install the card, please note that you can seriously tighten down enough with the clevo bracket that the metal latches bend down a lot. Go gentle and evenly among each screw post

I personally prefer a small ball. Little larger than a small pea but not oversized.

One thing I do which others may not approve of, is I do a ball on the heatsink then spread it with a plastic glove and then wipe up any excess. I do this as I feel it helps fill in microfissures on the heatsink before contact. With the guys here, I'm sure I'll hear why this is a bad idea or pointless. I never had a proven reason for doing this.
