  1. smaller screen bezel\frame (just look at how nice the new dell xps 15 & 13 are) go crazy: 21:9 laptop? and tailor a backpack that can hold it lol 24" 22" 21" 20" laptops? three or four way sli, desktop variant gpus, or perhaps create a special blend gpu: consider going dual gpu on a single graphic card: just like geforce 690 was (or amd's new fury x2): Why not desktop variant of geforce 980, in a dual gpu format (essentially twice the memory, two gpu cores, and slightly less than 200% the physical size)... now put two of this in SLI in a 20" thin bezel laptop that is essentially no bigger than 18" laptop and oh yeah... thunder bolt 3 that uses usb type c port * 8 (and no regular size usb\ethernet\vga\hdmi... just this type of port) ditch the optical drives ditch the 2.5" drives nvme m.2 ssd only, raid supporting go nutz: slide door mechanism for.... two screens (imagine 2*20" yummy) screen that can be height adjusted ..... that neck pain is baaaaaaaaad make the computer out of high grade copper, entire thing is heat conductive, if we wanted it not to be heavy we wouldn't have bought your product anyways, we don't care for weight (as long as you keep it under 15kg lol) gsync, 144hz ah-ips (or newer format of ips) maybe the entire gpu section can be on the screen (behind the display panel) instead of in the keyboard, this way fans can intake from bottom and push up, and distance from cpu = superior temp management how about actual desktop computer instead of a laptop?: actual desktop motherboard, actual desktop gpu, uses normal PCIe 3.0 X16 connector (perhaps with adapter) for gpu, and your heatsink step farther: What if the gpu is normal full size desktop gpu, sits behind the display panel, the back plate of the laptop is massive copper heatsink, no blower fans, just plain fans that pulls air from behind the monitor onto the gpu, no need to "choke" under the laptop, or anything, really seems most reasonable. which totally opens the space up for four gpus to be connected.... Also: why laptop ram? Go bananas: get some qualcomm soc embedded in the motherboard, and have two different power buttons on the laptop, one leads to normal pc other leads to the soc, a smartphone's soc+ laptop's format and battery equals what.... 5 days of work time if all you need is the most basics of computer functions? could be awesome. If you did all of the above, (went for a micro atx form motherboard, but instead of box shape went with a wide rectangle) gpus are behind the screen, no optical or 2.5" drives, just m.2 ssds, then in theory there's now excessive free space in the laptop.... counter that with physical keyboard, that plus a screen that can be height adjusted and you got a real winner, esp if you managed to shove 20" to 18" size due to reduced bezel, this will essentially be the ultimate laptop (and totally kill msi's gt80 since .. bigger screen but same size laptop, far faster hardware) Also... a military grade rugged ~1500wat PSU will be probably required here (because this laptop will be able to handle extreme edition x99 cpu and four way sli of geforce 980ti.... so yeah)
  2. Most impressive results! especially considering that normally an 4700HQ or 4800MQ only score ~4700points, and that your 675M used to score around 2200points, it definitely makes more sense to upgrade the GPU instead of the cpu+gpu, heck you just gained +- an addition of 100% performance! I'll be keeping this thread open in anticipation for your windows 8.1 installation's experience report =p if everything goes smoothly for you than we really are in the clear if you do fresh install, I recommend/suggest that you go with GPT instead of MBR, this might require toggling the UEFI settings in your bios to "enabled"
  3. :adore:Thank you so much iTzZent!!
  4. While I am looking forward to see your 3dmark results(upgraded gpu systems are not very common and when you normally see results for 800 series cards its with systems that shipped with 4th gen intel cpu, so seeing a 3rd gen or even 2nd gen intel cpu + 800 series or 900 series gpu is something both rare and informative, it helps put the value of cpu upgrade (or lack of) in place, similar to z97 desktop "K" suffix cpu + mobile gpu, just goes to show you how things compare) The thing with the OS is that from what I gathered, depending on your eh... this might get a little complicated, well, in short you can either be using a MBR (master boot record) or GPT (GUID Partition Table) to tell your computer where your operation system is installed and how to access it (and the different drives of your system), with the later (gpt) being newer and supporting other operation systems besides windows (linux?) as well as drives that are bigger than 2TB. GPT is also somehow assoitied with UEFI which I .. was thinking refered to the new "pretty" type of bios(s) [the ones with support four a mouse and even a browser and .. stuff] but I'm actually not sure. Now from what I understand, its possible that with locked bios your system is "rigged" to only work with one of the above combinations, and should you try to install windows on a fresh disk in another type of configuration it will simply not boot, and the point of unlocked bios for cpus that are locked and cant be overclocked was just for the sake of being able to change this advance boot settings (UEFI enable\disable - for example) and thus enabling you to swap from 7 to 8 and later 10. I am already on 8, but as my other drive is 2TB and not bigger than 2TB I am using the old MBR and .. i think my UEFI is disabled, despite having an unlocked bios. And I am planning in the future to upgrade to windows 10 (I think it kicks ass but... logic\opinions a side) I just don't want to end up being "locked out" of being able to boot a new OS due to bios being locked... I am guessing im just making a mess of all of this technical terms and that everything will just be "alright" when time comes to upgrade to 10 / that if I was to flash .51X right now (despite not yet obtaining a new 980m) that my windows 8.1 would still boot
  5. Awesome, just one last question about that "/x" parameter, do you use the msi flash tool to create bootable usb thumb drive for the purpose of flashing a new bios? that's what I did when I moved from .30S to .30U, but I don't recall ever seeing "/x" show up (either in instructions or otherwise)
  6. Thank you! I can't stress enough how much this small bit of information was driving me up a wall, I am so relieved to learn that its okay and that I can flash to .51X Edit: Did you have that bios unlocked by Svet? also are you running windows 7 or windows 8\8.1? By the way, did you get a chance to run 3dmark13's firestrike standard test yet?
  7. Funkyboy, Just to confirm, your laptop is indeed a 1762 barebone, and not the retail version? I have spoken with Svet and the way he explained things is that the .51X bios (as well as the .71X bios) are made for the retail version of the 1762 (there's also a version for the 15" 16F3), flashing this bios on a barebone system is in fact "cross flashing", your system is indeed the barebone 1762? everything went smoothly with the bios update to .51X ? what was your old bios version?(mine is still .30U)
  8. Hey ItzZent, I spoke with Svet, he says that both bios versions of .51X and .71X are avilable for either 16F3 system or 1762 but only to a retail one, since my system is barebone applying this bios version to it would be "cross flashing", and should I opt to do that then I am doing it at my own risk. Would you happen to know anyone that have flashed either .51X or .71X on a barebone 1762 system?
  9. Thank you, I just spend a few hours reading all 63 pages of this thread, at page 12 some guy with my system (MS-1762) actually joins the discussion as he tried to get 970m to work on his computer but he never posted the end results, I am going to assume that he did that as he got it to work and didn't need any further help. What I couldn't figure out is where to get the .51X for the MS-1762 and which version of the 980M is\are supported by my laptop (am I redistricted to only MSI branded 980M or will Clevo\Dell work too?) Additionally, while the bios was made by MSI, I would still need Svet to unlock it for the sake of altering to advance boot related settings in order to boot into Windows 8 or 7 (right?O_o) Again, many thanks iTzZent! <3 Edit: Seeing as all MS-16F3 owners that upgrade to the 970M used Clevo I am going to assume that Clevo will work for my MS-1762 due to the great resemblance between the two systems. Specifically speaking I am talking about this 970M: http://rjtech.com/shop/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=30307 My plan is actually to get the Clevo 980M from here: http://rjtech.com/shop/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=30303
  10. Interesting and helpful, thank you! I will be contacting Svet to find out if I can get that bios version for my laptop =) Thank you so much! p.s. For any one reading this in the future, I have found a MS-16F3 user that have updated successfully to the 970M using a ".51X" bios update from Svet. //will update when I have some results ... which might take a few months depending on shipping and stock :x
  11. Thank you for the update! I have checked over at The Official MSI GT60/70 970m/980m Upgrade Thread | NotebookReview and after reading the entire 62 pages of that post I found that a single user (at about page 16), named "Dgs6686" attempted to install the 970M in his MS-1762, his last post have a screenshot of his computer detecting that card as "VGA standard adapter" and he never posted after, I don't know if he managed to get the card fully working and recognized by windows and due to that lost interest in posting or if he failed to achieve working 970m and gave up. I believe that there is a huge chance that you are right about the MS-1762 supporting the GTX980M with 51x bios, and that the above mentioned person probably got it working, but I do not know at this stage. Regarding that 51x bios, I understand that sharing unlocked bios is disallowed as it does disservice to its unlocker (svet from official forums), however, would you happen to know where can I get the locked version? and are there more than one variation of that bios? and.... can I upgrade from .30 directly to 51x? (I have 3rd gen cpu)
  12. Does any of you know if that 1762 barebone supports the 980m ?
  13. Interesting! While I realize that this is somewhat of an hijack, would you happen to know what parts are needed (assuming its even possible) to upgrade MSI 1762 (62-033) 680M (MSI GT70 Barebones) [EC = 1762EG62.401, Bios = E1762IG6.3SU - .30U] to something that is compatible with GeForce 980m? Right now the only MSI computers that are sold with the 980M are the GT72 and the GT80, seeing as the GT80 uses two GPUs I am going to assume that its guts\mainboard wont fit the MSI 1762 (GT70) that I have, but would the GT72? and would I also still require a GT72 power sensor board (with data cable), hdd1 board, hdd2 board (as well as a Gen4 cpu as last that I have checked this computer used a BGA type CPU (that is soldered directly into the motherboard (embedded) unlike the MSI 1762 that uses PGA which is replaceable type of CPU(s))?
  14. I and my two other friends also have this issue with our 1762 (a gt70 barebone variation from xoticpc), our solution was to get external microphone, we ended up all getting the same SteelSeries Siberia Microphone for about $25usd off ebay, you just clip it to the headset cable and plug to the computer and forget about it. We had to get something external as no matter what we did our experience proved that the internal microphone is nothing but complete garbage I looked for the microphone now at ebay and only found one listed for $50usd which is.. twice as much that you should be paying SteelSeries Siberia Microphone 50002 Japan | eBay However Amazon (Both american and briten) seems to have it in supply Amazon.com: SteelSeries Siberia Microphone (pin microphone) white 50002: Video Games http://www.amazon.com/SteelSeries-Siberia-Microphone-pin-black-50003/dp/B0035JL2LO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1424173165&sr=8-2&keywords=SteelSeries+Siberia+Microphone http://www.amazon.co.uk/SteelSeries-Siberia-Microphone-Black-PC/dp/B0035JL2LO/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1424173149&sr=1-1&keywords=steelseries+microphone http://www.amazon.co.uk/SteelSeries-Siberia-Microphone-White-PC/dp/B0035ER6GO/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1424173149&sr=1-2&keywords=steelseries+microphone Good luck =)
  15. Dare I say think big... 20" screen? no? just me on this? okay How about 3way Sli (fully MXM upgradeable design)? 5th gen i7 desktop cpu? HDMI input as well as output? same for Display Port? Remove that cd\dvd tray out (seriously, when did you last use that thing?) Change battery design to one similar to Lenovo's "Battery Slice" (aka huge flat peace that sits under the laptop, with vent holes) but no need for more than 2hours worth of very basic semi-idle usage or 30min of hardcore gaming Screen that matches the specifications of the EIZO gaming monitor? you know... the FG2421 (VA panel, 1080p, 240 Hz) and toss in G-SYNC And as a alternative option have specs similar to the MG279Q (1440p, IPS, 120Hz with G-SYNC) Both matte, maybe as a 3rd option also have an IPS 60 Hz without G-SYNC come to think of it did anyone ever try to put the battery behind the screen? thus removing a heat source from the main area? (also freeing up space) I mean, as long as the screen holders are of superb quality and that the battery is either flat enough or low enough this shouldn't be an issue, right? Take a look now for a moment on the traditional\stock design of the Geforce 980 desktop cooler's design: its a sort of a blower, sucks air from front, blows to back, what if you had two regular sized such cards (yes desktop 980) blowing hot air behind the laptop, taking air form under the laptop, separated by design from the desktop cpu that would be in the center [d.gpu][cpu][d.gpu], like.. how heavy would this have to be? 10kg? now granted, now power cord at the wall = only gpu working is the built in one that is found in the cpu, but ... just imagine a 20" 4K display and a solid frame rate that you can only have with desktop grade cards... yuummmy Okay maybe I went too far ._.
  16. Maybe =p, How bad are the scores with the 980m in it? (as in, maybe its ... just "visual"?)
  17. Hey all, back in 2004 I bought a IBM ThinkPad T42 laptop, and that little buster is still working, sure i replaced an HD and the CPU's FAN but other then that the computer works flawlessly, (I used it as a school laptop for four years, then desktop replacement two years [no movement, didnt even close the screen lid] and sense then a school computer again) and the machine works. I am now finally at the point where the old hardware wont cut it (2gbram\centrino 1.6ghz\80gb hd) as I need to run windows 8\visual studio 2011\office 2010 (or higher). The T42 was sold to me for a shy 2200USD, I don't mind paying about the same this days, whats most important for me is reliability\durability, i don't need military grade computer, and no one can predict the future, but, was there any computer that was released from say.. 2010 to now that is known for not crushing and burning? anything that stands out? I got my eyes right now on a x220T or X1, what do you people think?
