2. Guys, on a similar note. I've recently installed AutoCAD 2016 and Revit 2016 and a long with the installation were a bunch of Microsoft Visual C++ redistributables. What happened after was that EVERY single game I ran, lagged. It was ridiculous. I even reinstalled the game fresh and still lagging. I believed it was these C++ installs that made everything lag. Am I right? I did a system restore and everything's back to normal now, but I don't have the latest CAD nor revit. Did anyone every run into anything like this? The programs were working fine. Just that the games were lagging like crazy.

    Thoughts anyone?

  3. (Using drivers for all hardware components that Win 10 installed automatically, apart from NVidia driver, and I decided to install the latest Killer Wireless driver (now Win 10 approved)).

EDIT: Alienware Command Centre does work, but use the Win 8 version from the M17xR4. You can find the link at the following post: M17XR3 IDT Windows 8 Driver v.6.10.0.6421 Maxx Audio 3 + Quality | NotebookReview

You can also install the IDT drivers from that post too.

Also note that I was having cold boot issues with Windows 10, but I found out how to fix that, make sure you have Fast Start-Up disabled in the Power Options, see following screeshot for where you disable Fast Start-Up:

I found it a bit of a headache upgrading to Windows 10 from Win 7. The in-place upgrade didn't work properly - black screen - had to do a Reset using the USB Windows 10 installation media. I did a backup image of my Win 7 OS partition using Macrium Reflect before upgrading to Win 10, so I could put everything back to how it was without any fuss if I wanted to. After the Reset Windows 10 worked ok but still needed some tweaking to sort various cold boot issues - see post #440 & post #442.

If you're not willing to have to tinker with your laptop again, then I wouldn't recommend upgrading to Window 10 - for gaming DX12 games probably aren't going to start coming out till sometime next year, and I think I read there's only 2 DX12 games slated for 2016.

EDIT: your sound issues, you might have to do the same installation process on Win 10 to get it to work - I don't know.

Thanks for the reply Robbo. So, what happened to me when I tried to upgrade my secondary hard drive to a 2Tb was that I took the page filing option to the secondary drive instead of the main SSD. When I switched out the hard drive, it refused to start. After I switched it back, it worked. So, after figuring out how to get it running, and I reinstalled EVERYTHING, (like (800Gb of programs/ games) I realized that every 30 secs to 5 mins, the computer would freeze for like 5-10 secs, then go back to normal. (lol, I know, just my luck right) The issue was that the a bios setting was incorrect. I can't remember if I had RAID or AHCI, but whichever one it was, I had the wrong one and I couldn't just switch it, so I had to do a clean install and the only way to reinstall the audio drivers to get the computer working without the external sound card is to have the soundcard drivers installed!!!

I had to swap back to the 6990mHD and install the drivers. It worked fine. I installed everything and all was go.

A few months later, I decided to play a game that was incompatible with the soundcard and the 780mGTX installed. Anyway, long story short, it was a disaster. Sometimes, the computer would refuse to boot with the 6990mHD installed. I literally did the exact thing for 4 hours straight; CHANGING NO DETAIL with what I did, and only 4 hours later it worked. It was PURELY hit or miss. There were 4 beeps or 5 beeps or 6 beeps sometimes and the way around them was different all the time. Imagine that for one of the scenarios, the GPU had to be removed, sometimes it wouldn't need to. Then I had to put bios settings back whenever I removed the GPU, when it wasn't, I'll have to hold down the function button, then try again. Then when it does start, it will start with the screen flickering in green or red or something. Then I would have to re-seat the card, then go into bios and re-set stuff. Sometimes, i forgot to change it, AHHHHHHH!!!! it was a nightmare and a half, seriously.

Seeing that you had to go through all that and you have no sound card issue, I think I'm good with windows 7.

Like they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. In my 2Tb data drive, I have like 1.4Tb filled with movies, games and programs. I might seriously get a stroke this time around. I'll think I'll just have Windows 10 on my netbook and have my m17x run windows 7. I use it like a desktop anyways and i use the M11x when I'm mobile.

A couple questions; the driver you linked above, do you think it'll work with the 780m GTX installed on a windows 7 machine? I think it will be the same procedure as usual :(

  4. Hey guys, I have a situation that I'd like some advice with if you can help. Basically I'm thinking about upgrading my M17xR3 to windows 10. Now, I was thinking that if I was to go about doing that, that the main problem would obviously be the sound card issues as before. Now, lol, I've gone through hell and back with this M17xR3 and I've vowed that I will not open up this computer again. The latest thing that I did was upgrade the secondary hard drive to a 2Tb hard drive so that I can store more media on it. The 500Gb wasn't cutting it, so the act of upgrading that was ridiculous, but I got it done. (Yes, I had to re-format and do a clean installation)

The latest nuisance with this computer was playing Black Ops 2 on it. Apparently this game has issues with the sound card as well while using the 780m GTX. Anyways, with the 2Tb upgrade solved, I thought that I could at least swap back to the 6990mHD back and forth (that was the worst idea). Long story short, I had a hell ride getting the 780m GTX working again, the computer even refused to boot with the 6990mHD.

I'm still running windows 7 on my M17x (back up and running) and I have windows 10 installed in my netbook, which really looks promising, hence why I'm thinking about upgrading my 17". Has anyone even thought about upgrading to windows 10 or has anyone even tried with all the upgraded hard drives and gymnastics that needs to be done to get the hardware running? I've been really out-of-date with this forum, so please excuse me if this has been discussed before. Can it be done without issue with the M17xR3 with the hardware upgrades or is it too much stress to manage?

  5. Okay, i got it fixed in an alternative way, but it works.......... I enabled IDT and booted into safe mode and installed the IDT driver, restarted and then went into Bios disabled IDT and booted normally (without driver signing) and installed Nvidia driver, restarted and enabled IDT in Bios again and booted normally, and now it works. :) It took some tries but i managed to get it running without any dissassembly. :D

thanks, that's good to know. I've had my old card on me since, lol, now i can toss it. :P i'll keep note of that if i want to upgrade to windows 10! I really hate taking apart my computer after all the headache with my upgrades. U have no idea the trouble i went through with my gpu, cpu and hdd upgrades... the headaches were in decreasing order however, but trouble nonetheless. I was hoping that the secondary hdd upgrade was the last time i had to take apart my laptop.

  6. How do you install the IDT drivers while its Disabled in Bios, when i try to install the IDT driver it says no hardware is found.

u need to have the 780m out of the laptop to have the soundcard enabled in order to install the IDT driver. i don't know why this is the case, because i enabled audio once my 780m was recognized and it didn't install. I had to take it out to get it to work. I put in my old 6990m, enabled audio, installed driver, disabled audio, swapped to 780m, started ok, then i reenabled the audio and everything worked. i know this because i had to reinstall windows when i changed my secondary hdd to a 2TD.

  7. I've been using nv_dispi.inf for some time now, mainly to exclude OEM customizations.

    Since nvdmi.inf lacks Maxwell entries and to avoid multiple INFs, I've included all models & cards -> nv_dispi.inf <- AW17 - M17x - AW18 - M18x - GTX 980M - 970M - 880M - 780M - 680M - Single & SLI

    Desktop entries GTX 980/970.

  8. The difference is that one has come from an MSI machine, and the other one comes from a Clevo, beyond that I don't know the differences. I have a Clevo card in my laptop, if I had to choose between them I'd take the card from the Clevo, just on the evidence that I've got a Clevo card working in my laptop. Might be a good idea to google around if there any incompatibility issues between MSI and M17xR3, etc. Best bet is to get confirmation from the seller, hopefully he will respond. I'd go with the Clevo card though if I had to choose one. I got mine from Upgrade Monkey, and they could confirm compatibility for me.

(In my previous post I wasn't referring to the pasting, I was referring to the placement of the pads as the most difficult aspect).

What about the sound card issue? Will that be present with the 770m? I assumed it was for all the 700m series cards...

  9. He has the Optimus model so removing the 780M and enabling HD3000 is possible -> uninstall Nvidia drivers (safe mode/DDU third uninstall option)-> Install IDT -> Disable IGP & Set display to PEG -> Install 780M.

I understand, but I meant to have both enabled like before the upgrade... So the graphics switching feature can be utilized again. I'm tempted to try, but I really don't want I have to take apart my computer again. I might get a stroke this time around.

  10. Also, would this work if I used my Intel IGP after pulling out the 780m, since my old card is dead?

Idk. I never re-enabled my hd3000... To be honest, I HARDLY even play games any more... I just watch netflix and go on YouTube and Facebook, lol... I only play mw3 sometimes and that's it. I not that much into games as before. Perfect timing right? Lol

  11. Yes, those CPU temperatures are a bit high, especially if just during gaming, where typically it won't stress your CPU to anywhere near 100% utilisation, so I'm pretty sure it's just not pasted up well. I'd redo the pasting, and leave the CPU retention mod to further on down the road if you decide to do overclocking. If there's nothing wrong with your CPU heatsink, and you paste it up well, then you should be able to keep you CPU nice & cool while gaming without the CPU retention mod. Apparently with the CPU retention mod it can damage your chip if you screw down the screws too tight, so I'd leave that for now.

My CPU isn't overclocked, it's just been modded with Throttlestop to allow full turbo boost up to 56W without any time limit associated with it. Normally you can only get the full turbo for a short duration of time, but with the mod I've done it can run at 56W & full turbo forever. Temperatures less than 83 degC when running Prime95 for 10 minutes. During gaming I don't think you should see temperatures higher than the high 70's, low 80's on your CPU as a guesstimate, but google around for other M17xR3 2920XM users temperatures if you want to compare.

I'd repaste your CPU if I was you.

Ok, I think I pretty much gotten better at doing a paste job. I read that the thinner the layer, the better. Is that true? I pasted my GPU with Arctic Silver 5. I was thinking to use Arctic Silver again for the CPU as opposed to ICD 7. I remember doing the paste job on my other GPU before (the last time, remember? ) with ICD7. it was so coarse that it actually scratched the GPU die. (the metal plate that you have to apply the thermal compound on the VGA card itself). It looked like someone used sandpaper on it. :suspicion:

The paste job i did on my current card, I put a little dab of AS5 in the middle and took my metro card and spread it on the die. (as if I were buttering bread) It actually turned out to be too thin a layer, so i had to put a little more. I screwed it up and unscrewed and checked until I was satisfied. :40_002: I don't know what that method is called. Do you know? I figure I'd do the same with my CPU. A thin layer if I'm not mistaken?

Ok, so the Heaven benchmark tool is for GPU temp testing and I assume that this Prime95 is better at CPU testing... I found a download for Prime95: Prime95 (64bit) - 25.11 Download - EXTREME Overclocking

Is that it or is it the wrong one that you have? I agree with you too. I think games wouldn't be CPU intensive. I actually used hwinfo to monitor if my CPU is throttling in the OSD during gaming. I remember it started throttling with BF4 single player. :59:

  12. Nope, pretty sure the CPU wouldn't be the bottleneck, it's a really good CPU (my CPU doesn't bottleneck any of mine), there might be a handful of games where it bottlenecks (like Planetside 2 I heard), but you've got eight logical cores on that thing, so if BF4 can use 8 threads (which I'm sure it can), then you won't be bottlenecking any GPU, even if it was a desktop GPU! Having said that, it's worth checking to make sure that your CPU is not throttling due to excessive heat or something of that nature. Monitor the CPU clocks while gaming to make sure it's not throttling.

Hey Robbo, I was doing some gaming on my laptop last night and I noticed that the cpu temperature was like 90-95C for 4 cores. :67: It actually shut off my computer. I was like: :waaaht:

I think I will have to give the retention mod a go. I found the thread here: http://forum.techinferno.com/alienware-m17x-aw-17/24-m17x-retention-mod.html

I wanted to ask you. Initially, I don't want to overclock my CPU unless its absolutely necessary, but with stock clocks, what SHOULD a good temperature be? Idle is about 55C I believe, but when under load, WOAH!!! big increase. I was thinking I could do a good paste job then if that fails, I can give the retention mod a go, :01: but under load, say 100% or whatever, what are good temps? What's your temps? I remember you said your cpu is overclocked, so I assume that a stock clocked cpu would be lower temp:59:

  13. I suppose this thread is not really here to talk about specific game issues, but more the hardware side of things in terms of installing your 780M & maybe overclocking it, so I'm not that interested in the nuances of getting COD Ghosts to run without crashing.

You don't have to overvolt & overclock if you don't want to; but, if you do, then just test it with games you know don't crash in a systematic way while monitoring your temps.

My CPU never throttles, maybe your's is running too hot, but it shouldn't throttle at 90 degC (that's too low). I haven't done the c-clip retention mod because my temperatures are fine without it (less than 83 degC on Prime95). To know if your CPU is throttling or not you have to monitor the clocks so you can understand what's going on. Maybe run Prime95 on it while looking to see how the CPU clocks behave at the same time - then you'll really know what's happening.

I went off on a tangent, my apologies. Anyways, I will test the clocks with another game and will stick to the thread discussion in my future posts.

To stay on topic, when I was installing the heatsink, I noticed that the screws on the x-bracket on the heatsink mount were incompatible with the x-bracket on the back of the vga card. The screws that came with the upgrade kit are of a different length to the ones on the card. My idea is that this can vary the pressure applied on the card if screwed in all the way. What do you think? Do you think this could have caused problems with me previously, ALTHOUGH the tech in Eurocom said it works with an Eurocom laptop and not alienware laptops? If that is the case, I can't help but feel a bit guilty, but the guy says it works, so i'm even more confused. Obviously if it works on Eurocom laptops and not Alienware, its defective, but I'm humble and conscious of stuff like this. :(

  14. I don't have COD Ghosts. Anyway, if you're saying the game is unstable regardless of whether you're overclocking or not, then you should use another game to test the stability of your overclocks. That way you'll know that crashes are due to the overclock and not a patch required in a game - systematic!

I understand what you're saying, but read the article. I was using fraps to check the fps, and for some reason or the other, fraps has a conflict with ghosts. I always used to tell myself, "when all else fails, read the instructions"... I wanted to test it out more, but I have to work. I will test the clocks with another game later, but I'm still frightened to overvolt. I'm a BIG call of duty fan. Since COD1&2. That's the only reason i overclocked my card with svl7's vbios. I really didn't want to, but in the moment I was confident. If there are work arounds, I will go around that path, but I'm still afraid to overvolt and overclock.

Did you get a copy of bf4? My cpu is throttling severely with that game. I believe cod ghosts is causing my cpu to throttle as well. i'm seeing temps as high as 90C. I might do the clip retention mod if that's the case. have you done that as yet? Necessity is the mother of invention. I don't want to do it, but if i have to, i have to...

  15. Why don't you be a little more systematic, you seem to be jumping to a lot of conclusions. Just because your COD crashed when you were overclocking doesn't mean it needs a patch, it probably just means that your overclock is unstable. Just change one thing at a time, retest with a game or benchmark over an extended period of time, and if it crashes or you get artifacts, then first assume it's your overclock, not the game's fault. Then just keep fine tuning the variables like clock & voltage to get the best result. Your temperatures are good by the way.

    Check this:

Call of Duty Ghosts FOV, Ram Fix, FPS, Lag, Crashes, Freezes, Stuttering, Errors, and Fixes - SegmentNext

By chance, you got it running properly? I did have fraps running btw, LOL!
