  1. Hi Mr Fox. I have a question to ask. A 330w worked great for my m17x R4 as I've mentioned before. Now I want to make 600w instead of 660w PSU for my m18x R2. The reason that I am not making 660w PSU is it seems a little bit difficult technically, however 600w is already out there in stock for p570wm. It runs in same 19.5v so I think it would work if I can only mod the "jack"part. What do you think of using 600w (300+300) of p570wm for m18x R2? If it works, it would make things alot easier actually.
  2. I just tried but same result as J95. We need another bios~!
  3. Hello, so have you succeeded in overriding stock TDP in m17x R4? With my m18x R2, even with 3,9/3.9/3,9/3,9 overclock consumes more than 70w TDP even without unlocked bios. But with m17x R4, nothing seems to help..
  4. XTU or TS won't work with m17x R4 in terms of increasing TDP. Even with unlocked bios and proper settings such as msr lock disabled, I found it is impossible in m17x R4 to increase the stock TDP of CPU. I have tested this with four m17x R4 and a few CPUs (XM and QM), and nothing helped to increase the stock TDP setting. XM CPU wont consume more than 67w and QM 55w. If anybody can prove I am wrong, I would be more than happy to know how to break the "intel law" in m17x R4.
  5. Ok folks, the main reason which made me use unlocked bios was to overclock flawlessly. I wanted to override TDP (short/long power limit) of XM cpu. However, in m17x R4 even with unlocked bios (with all the proper options set for overclock eg. msr disabled), XM cpu does not comsume more than what it was meant to use by intel, i.e. 55w long and 67w short power limit. I have tested in four m17x R4, so I am sure this is not a problem of mine but of general m17x R4 or bios. Whatever I do or you do with unlocked bios, 3920xm/3940xm CPUs wont use more than 67w in m17x R4. I have tested many other CPUs such as 3720qm and 3820qm and both were allowed to use 55w max, which was set by intel. So now, I would like to ask svl7 how you think about this issue. I really want to override my TDP settings and hope that he can fix this partial-locked "unlocked" bios.
  6. Hi I am using m17x R4 3D too. I recently added 780m to my m17x R4. As J95 mentioned, the only GPU that supports 3D in R4 is GTX 6xxm. 5xx or 7xx would not give you the 3d function at all. However, 120hz LCD is still usable. For me, 3D didn't matter. I purchased 3d LCD for 120HZ and 400nit. This LCD is better for your eyes and brighter than normal LCD. I am very happy with my new 780m. It was almost plugNplay.
  7. Thank you, Mr Fox. You inspired me to try 330w adaptor to my m17x R4. Recently I upgraded my CPU and GPU to 3900xm(QBC1) and 780m. Then I was benchmarking with 3dmark11. Strange thing was that even though both graphics and physics score were higher than 10k, the combined score sucked like hell with 240w adaptor. The temps were less than 80C, both, so I thought this might be caused by power limit of 240w adaptor, and after reading this post of yours, I got one of 330w adaptor for my m17x R4 Then what happened? With same clock and power settings for CPU and GPU, the 3dmark total score went up from 9500 to 9900. And also, I was able to overclock more for both CPU and GPU, and made my personal 3dmark11 record. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M video card benchmark result - Intel Core i7-3720QM Processor,Alienware M17xR4 I really wanted to thank for your idea for i never thought 240w would be lacking power. Lastly, have you tried 330w single adaptor to the new 17AW? Would it not use more than 240w as new 18AW does not use more than 330w as you mentioned?
  8. Thanks, Robbo. It was +270/+270 added to the vbios base clock by means of NVIDA inspector with 140% power target and +100.0mv voltage offset. My CPU was set to 4.2 * 4 clock, too.
  9. First of all, Thank you so much svl7 !!! I have recently upgraded my CPU to ivy XM ES (QBC1) and GPU to 780m. With mod bios and vbios, I have made my personal record of 3dmark11. It used to be 7.6k, and with help of those super-mods bios 10k+ was possible. http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/7809567
  10. Thanks for your reply. I thought the clock multiplier lock was the only different thing between QM and XM. I guess i was wrong. I need to get an XM or ES CPU. Thank. I really appreciate for your answer. (or otherwise I would have wasted my time even more)
  11. Thanks for your reply. Long power 45w and short 55w is the defalut setting of the QM CPUs. Are you refering to this defalut setting (TDP by 10 watts)? If so, is QM CPU never allowed to use more than 55w? Or do you mean long 55w and short 65w which is 10w higher than defalut setting? I have done not running TS too but nothing makes my R4 run like the values i put on in the bios nor in the XTU.
  12. my m17x r4 does not allow to change tdp<!-- google_ad_section_end --> <!-- google_ad_section_start -->hello i am in the dark TT. i am trying to oc my 3820qm and i've done it. But i want to keep the turbo mode more than 56sec(long power timewindow). i have done everything to solve this on my m17x r4. i've changed bios from a05 stock and a05 unlocked to a11 unlocked and a13 stock, and even installed every version of xtu and TS. The problem is it screen looks like tdp is changed in the bios, xtu and TS. However cpu never uses more than 55w and then after like 56sec it throttles down to 45w(that is 3.4ghz) i have disabled msr lock, changed short/long limit to 75(and even higher) and changed timewindow to 56sec(and higher too). But nothing seems to help me. People say they can run r4 at max turbo clock all day and i also have seen one of those screenshot. For me, it works as if msr lock isn't unlocked. Is there any way I can solve this? or is it just non-XM CPU's capability or even m17x's capability?
  13. hello i am in the dark TT. i want to fully oc my 3820qm. i have done everything to unlock my m17x r4 tdp. i've changed bios from a05 stock and unlocked to a11 unlocked and a13 stock. installed every version of xtu and TS. The problem is it looks like tdp is changed in bios, xtu and TS. However cpu never uses more than 55w and then after like 56sec it throttles down to 45w(that is 3.7ghz) i have disabled msr lock, changed short/long limit to 65(and even higher) and changed timewindow to 56sec(and higher too). But nothing seems to help me. People say they can run r4 at turbo clock all day and i also have seen one of those screenshot. For me, it works as if msr lock isn't unlocked. Please help me.
