Need help setting up an EXP GDC v.8 + GTX960 for internal display use

Recommended Posts

As the title suggests, I'm having problems making my eGPU (EXP GDC v.8 mPCIe + ASUS GTX960 Turbo OC 2GB) work with the internal display of my laptop (ASUS K56CB, i5-3317U, Gt740M 2Gb discrete gpu, running Windows 10 64-bit in UEFI mode). Done some modifications to the drivers and all that already, the gpu works fine with an external monitor connected via HDMI, however when I try to launch Nvidia control panel while using laptop's display, it says that "You are not currently using a display attached to an  NVIDIA GPU", hence my problem. Drivers i tried were all older than 372.70.  Also, a curious detail i noticed, none of the driver's nvami.inf files contain any listing of GTX960, at all, even though it's supposed to be there as far as I know. I'm probably Any help sorting this out is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

All changes were made to the notebook version of the driver 372.54. My hardware ID is: PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1401&SUBSYS_15871043.

In [NVIDIA_Devices.NTamd64.10.0]:

%NVIDIA_DEV.1401.1587.1043% = Section196, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1401&SUBSYS_15871043

In [Strings]:

NVIDIA_DEV.1401.1587.1043 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960"

Alright, just DDU'd my drivers in safe mode, disabled the driver signature enforcement, disabled the "other device" in device manager (740m judging by ID) and installed the 372.54 drivers modded with my lines above. After the restart, both the 740m and the 960 had their drivers installed, even though I disabled the prior. 960 works as it used to, and Nvidia control panel gives the same message, so no luck this time...

Maybe I should try removing the 740m from nvami.inf so that drivers for it don't get installed? It's not possible to disable it in BIOS, btw, option is not there.

Edit: Maybe using the "uninstall" option in the device manager is what I should try?

The 740m need to be eradicated from the displays manager list, you have to see only the igpu and the egpu there.

There is two ways to do that, disable in bios or use x1setup provided by ******.

Sincé none of them is available for you you coud try to disable the pcie that host the gt740m,not the card but the pcie bus that host it in the system device.

Works for me few times. i see you are mod the driver, guess there is no need for that, once you achieved that the system not see the dgpu, you could install the egpu  driver without mod.anything.

Actually, if the PCI-E lanes used for dGPU and eGPU are different and do not overlap, disabling the portion connected to the 740m might just work (fingers crossed). That's worth a try. Thank you for your time, and again, I'll post once I try doing this.

Just tried disabling the part of PCI-E bus that the 740m is connected to, as you suggested, and wiped all drivers, rebooted and installed the modded eGPU ones, however the issue still persists, meaning the 960 doesn't work with the internal display... The 740m is nowhere to be found in the device manager. I will try a few other things, though. Will post as soon as i do. Any suggestions are still appreciated, maybe my driver modding work isn't done properly?

You mean the latest one? Later than 372.70? Some people posted that anything later than it doesn't work, but I'll try.

Tried the latest drivers just now, and nvidia control panel gives the "no monitors connected to an nvidia gpu" message. Will try the older version now.

are you familiarized with upgrading BIOS procedure ?could unnhide the option to disable the dgpu within your bios .

Not recommended if you not have experience with this .....

No, unfortunately I am not familiar with it, however I have a general idea of how it's done. May try it if everything else fails.

Also,

Start thinking that  your dgpu interfiere in some way in the optiumus function,i am quite sure that you will have acceleration in an external monitor but the internal display function it is disabled.

It does work with the external display, I tested. It is the laptop display issues i'm trying to sort out. So yeah, probably optimus' fault in some way. maybe i should try using laptop drivers?

Edit: I'll try asking in the eGPU troubleshooting topic tomorrow, hopefully something will come of it.

Hi guys, bit of a rookie to the whole EGPU scene. Currently I have:

      - MacBook Pro 2015 13inch (3.1GHz Core i7 16GB RAM)
      - Razer X Core
      - Apple TB3 to TB2 Adapter
      -  TB2 Cable (Cable Matters)
      - 23inch AOC External Monitor

I am wonder about what graphics card to get to run X-Plane11 with high graphic settings?
I have purgewrangler set up and ready to use with an AMD graphics card, but am also open to the idea of an Nvidia graphics card.
Any advice appreciated. I did not buy a Windows PC as I need a Mac for various other things and wanted an all-in-one laptop.

I have always been a big fan of Windows 7. I have 4 Media PCs throughout my house and a laptop. I have recently updated some of them to Windows 10 Pro. I have tried everything to get them talking on my LAN. I cannot share files anymore. They all ping, but are missing in the network folder. Thank God for Plex. Any advice?

The GPU works, The PSU works, The system works. [individually they all do work]

The system works perfectly fine without the WLAN card.

When i put the system to sleep and hotswap the mPCIe riser and WLAN press something on the keyboard.. Restarts.
Will shutdown in roughly 27 seconds for those 27 seconds it works just fine like how it normally would on external monitor.

When i shut it down and plug the riser and switch it on, same story. 27 seconds.

I don't even see a error. I get to login screen directly. I used DDU already.

I timed it. no matter what i do if i use the eGPU, External monitor it restarts instead of pause-play. I have 27 seconds.

      Need help!

      Hi guys,

I'm sorry for making another thread just for this but I really wanted to pick your brains on this!

I have an m15x with a 770m running windows 7 and everything works. Rock. Solid. I'm pretty happy with it. Since windows 7 is on it's way out, I would like to upgrade to windows 10. Now I've looked into it before and had a really hard time getting the 770m to behave nicely and had all these issues with green/yellow/pink screens and I remember it being a miracle I got it to work on 7 as good as it does.

My question is how well does the 970m install vs the 770m - particularly on windows 10? I would buy it in a heartbeat if it makes the install less tedious with the colored screens and all that. Especially if all the functions work on it! I have been searching the internet and I cannot find nearly as many problems with the 970m as I could with the 770m, or am I just  not looking in the right places?

      Thanks a million!

I got the exp gdc beast 8.5 got all the connections right... laptop boots up... fans turn on the gpu.... device manager detects gtx 1060 with a “ ! “ in a yellow triangle. Now what to do.... i tried to do the bios mod.... but realised that i have 3.07 version.
      Questions-
1 is there any way to get this done without the mod??
2 if mod is the only way... kindly help me with step by step instruction in laymans terms... i m not a techy... so i might not understand technical terms.... altho i am interested... but learning yet. Please help.
