Installed 780M, cant install driver, computer reboots during install

Recommended Posts

Just like the title says, I cant get the driver to install. I'm on Windows 10 x64 release 160906. The card works in 1920 x 1080 with the windows vga drivers. I've disabled driver signing, I'm in test mode. I've tried the nvidia driver versions, 365.19, 372.54, 372.70, 372.90. With modded inf's for each from laptopvideo2go.com They all start the install, but when it gets to the driver install, the screen goes black for about 30 seconds, then the computer just reboots. The drivers don't get installed. I've seen a bunch of threads around about Windows 8, but nothing that seems to answer for windows 10. Is there something that I'm missing to get the drivers installed?

Update, found this thread.

I got the drivers installed following the directions, but after rebooting back into normal mode, the computer just reboots. I see the windows logo, screen goes black, then after about 30 seconds, it just reboots. This was using the 372.90 and inf files from the thread.

So, another update. I've been able to get a couple of drivers to install and work for a few minutes. Once on Windows 10, and once on Windows 8.1 (I downgraded to see if Windows 10 was the problem). After getting the drivers to install, the computer froze after a few minutes, and got a driver kernal recovered, but wouldn't work after that. Windows 10 got the 372.90 driver installed once, and Windows 8.1 got the 369.05 installed once. I've flashed the vbios from here for the 780m. Still wont install.

I put thermal paste on the card when I installed it, but I'm wondering if the paste isn't working. Could the gpu getting hot make the install fail? Or crash afterwards? Works just fine on the windows basic driver.

So, I managed to get a driver installed Eurocom http://downloads.eurocom.com/support/drivers/upgradeyourlaptop/Alienware/ it was the

It installed, and actually ran. for a bit anyway. The screen would not hold a high resolution. I could set it. Then after a few seconds the screen would go black, and it would reset to low res. After a little while, computer became unresponsive.

I have contacted the seller to see about exchanging the card for a different one.

If I instead upgraded my motherboard to an M17x R4, would the 780m card work with less problems? Or should I return the card and try a different one. I don't want to spend the money on a motherboard if it isn't going to work.

A M17x R4 just needs the latest official bios and modded drivers to run with a 780M.

I had no problems to get these combo working. At this time i used the 60Hz Display and upgraded later to an 120Hz.

Ok, another question then, should I return the original card? I've got the option to return it, get a second 780m, then later upgrade to an r4....I hate to get the r4, to then find that there is actually something wrong with the 780m I originally got.

Before i got the R4 i used the 780M in a R3 and never had any problems.

I only installed a modded bios, made the bios settings and used a modded driver and everythings works fine.

So if you still have the option to return and get another 780M i think you should give it a try.

I have always been a big fan of Windows 7. I have 4 Media PCs throughout my house and a laptop. I have recently updated some of them to Windows 10 Pro. I have tried everything to get them talking on my LAN. I cannot share files anymore. They all ping, but are missing in the network folder. Thank God for Plex. Any advice?

      Hi guys,

I'm sorry for making another thread just for this but I really wanted to pick your brains on this!

I have an m15x with a 770m running windows 7 and everything works. Rock. Solid. I'm pretty happy with it. Since windows 7 is on it's way out, I would like to upgrade to windows 10. Now I've looked into it before and had a really hard time getting the 770m to behave nicely and had all these issues with green/yellow/pink screens and I remember it being a miracle I got it to work on 7 as good as it does.

My question is how well does the 970m install vs the 770m - particularly on windows 10? I would buy it in a heartbeat if it makes the install less tedious with the colored screens and all that. Especially if all the functions work on it! I have been searching the internet and I cannot find nearly as many problems with the 970m as I could with the 770m, or am I just  not looking in the right places?

      Thanks a million!

      Hello Fellow Tech Gurus!

I am having a huge headache after upgrading the ram memory of my m17x r3.

First let me start by saying I have been experiencing issues with my current ram setup recently, and so i decided to replace the ram inside of my computer, thinking they had gone out on me. It originally came with x4 2gb memory sticks, and as I started to experience issue, I started to removed them, and I was down to 1 2gb stick. It seems to me ram slots 1 & 2 are not working properly as when I put ram memory into them I would get BSOD in 5-10 mins of computer usage after boot. So I am thinking the slots have gone out. I also tested each slot individually and still same effect.

So I went on the try out slots 3 & 4 under the keyboard, which seems to work just fine when I use only 1 ram chip in one or the other. But the problem occurs when I try and fill both ram slots in slots 3 & 4 under the keyboard with crucial 2x 8 gb of ram sticks, which total to 16gb total ram memory.

BSOD and freezing occurs like crazy. But if I use just one of the ram sticks in either slot, no problem.

I dunno if this is hardware or software. I am think that my motherboard is on its way out the door, but any suggestions you all have would be great. I have already clean installed win 7, and is currently running bios A10 (unlocked, I believe)

I would also like to note that my motherboards internal vga is not detected, and just noticed this a few days ago upon trying to figure out the ram situation.

other issues is my laptop battery is pretty much dead, and the only for my computer to cut on is if the AC adapter is connected

I would also like to know can 1x 16gb 1600 ram stick run in my computer? or is it not supported by my motherboard?

      thanks!

      Hi,
I just got a Dell r9 m290x card for my m17x r3. I'm using the stock A12 BIOS. Had PEG set in the BIOS and on boot had a black screen. I cleared CMOS, most likely reverted back to SG and on boot had a black screen with 8 beeps.
I've seen people on here report that it is working for them. Do I need to use a different vBIOS? Or maybe the unlocked A12 BIOS with some settings changed?
Any help would be appreciated   Thanks.

      Hey guys,

I have an Alienware m17x R3. i bought it as scrap. but currently working. i have this issues with this device. i hope you guys can help me out with this.

      Issues:

The device is charging when its turned off. and when its on (on) state, when i plug in the charger it turns off the light in the charger port.
solutions that i have tried: changed the charger and battery, flashed the bios.

change a capacitor near charging port.

after all of the solutions i tried. i have found one thing to be suspicious about. The device charges normally even on (on) state and doesn't kill the light in the chargers port. if i dont install the driver of the GPU 680m Dell 2gb.
can anyone help me with his matter? thank you
