Casualslacks
If this is already been addressed, please point me to the thread.I bought a P170HM from Malibal at the end of 2011. The AMD 6990M finally started crapping out in February. I "baked" it and got it going again until October. The last time, I had to bake it twice to get it going again. I decided to go for it and upgrade the GPU and CPU. I picked up a 2960XM and a GTX 680M on ebay and installed them this week. CPU's working like a champ, but when I attempt to boot up with the 680M installed, I get:1. The American Megatrends Logo2. 1 short beep followed by 2 more short beeps about a minute apart from each other3. A blinking cursor in the top left corner.I've checked with the seller and advised that he'd only used the 680M in Sager laptops. So I don't think that he's got some Alienware or MSI vbios on it. I assume the problem has to do with migrating from AMD to Nvidia. If that's the case, what can I do to get the card to work? I'm fully backed up and prepared to reformat or do a fresh installation of Windows or reflash the bios. I am currently on the most current/final bios for P170HM. Guest
Your card has the wrong vBIOS, which prevents it from passing post...Best would be to use another system to flash the card with the attached vBIOS.The only way you could try to flash it in your own HM system is described here:http://forum.techinferno.com/clevo/9748-p150hm-gtx-670mx-not-booting-normally-2.html#post149277CLEVO_GTX680M_4GB.rar
Casualslacks
Your card has the wrong vBIOS, which prevents it from passing post...Best would be to use another system to flash the card with the attached vBIOS.What would be the minimum system requirements be to use another laptop to flash the correct vBIOS on the video card? I really don't know any other Clevo users or even people with older MSI or Alienware devices. I've been attempting to work the company that built my laptop, but they are reluctant to bother with it. They're saying that if the BIOS won't even load, the card must be dead. I know that the card may in fact be dead; however, I have no way to confirm. haiwepa
Hello,If i remind correctly, p170hm has no optimus support, so if you see the boot logo, it seems that your vga card is working. Try to flash the vbios given by Prema above.
Casualslacks
Follow Up: I got ahold of Malibal who sold me the laptop 4 years and 3 weeks ago and they, if I shipped it to them, agreed to flash the card and try to get it working on my P170HM. However, what they determined was that my motherboard revision (V3.3) would not allow me to use the 680M at all, ever. I had heard about there being some restriction about certain machines only being able to use AMD card or Nvidia cards, but nothing like this. Malibal suggested that I would have needed V3.5 and suggested to look for another solution like the HD7970M or a GTX 5xxM GPU. Obviously, I was disappointed that I was going to double my GPU performance and support crazy textures with 4 gigs of VRAM. Anyway, I'm curious to know if I can get a second opinion or if anyone out there has the same motherboard revision and the same problem upgrading. Guest
HUH??? I have never heard of any HM not being able to run the GTX680M with vBIOS v29...Sager told some stories back in the days but no one had any actual problems to run them...even my v3.2 runs them perfectly. Did they at least flash your card to the correct vBIOS? Maybe the BIOS/EC are not on the latest version and need to be updated, too?! Casualslacks
They recommended that I use vBIOS in this *link*. I do not have positive confirmation from them, but I believe that is what they also used to attempt to get the card to work on my system. Here is also a *link* showing my current BIOS information. Yeah, it should work like that...given you are doing your own driver .inf mod... You should find out if they flashed your card and see what the actual boot behavior is now with v29 vBIOS. They report that the card had the correct vBIOS for HM and therefore didn't reflash.. That isn't the way I troubleshoot when I'm at work, but hey at least they didn't charge me for it. harrisson_at
I have the P170EM don´t know if its nearly the same but i have optimus. I can´t change it in the bios between the both cards, but you can see them in NVIDIA system, but you can´t change them, and you need both runnig to boot. I changed from a defective 680 to working 660 with Alienwarebios, but worked directly without mods.
